Started good for me and ended even better. I got kind of lost in the middle with all of the good looking, healthy looking, clean, warm & dry chain smoking POW's. But other than that, I appreciate the story and character.
I liked it. When you thought you knew where the film was headed, there would be a twist and go in a different direction, then another twist would come and another..etc. It kept the movie moving fast and stay interesting. Plus no annoying women in it, all men :)
Interesting twist to the standard WWII POW fare which instead cleverly showcases the racial card as a ploy to the real objective of the film which is not revealed until the final reel. Bruce Willis does play a 'so-called' hero but not how we 'General'ly think when comparing this to his standard fanfare surrounding his more familiar action material.
I thought this movie had a great story to it. If this were a true story, I'd believe that too. I think the acting was excellent in this movie and it was a great representation of the times in the POW and during the war. I thought the end was priceless and was one with the theme of the movie. I think the lesson was great at the end!
A stunning and nail-biting suspense-drama. Gripping, riveting and captivating. Bruce Willis is teriffic. Colin Farrel is fantastic. Terrence Howard is excellent.
A dark story with dark characters. The director and actors of this film were not afraid to make waging war against the Germans look a lot less heroic than people are used to. This may not be the kind of war film you're used to, it is a great one nonetheless and worth your time, as it deals with racism at a time when nobody knew who was friend or enemy - even on the same side of the camp's fence.
One of my favourite of war films although this is more of a courtroom drama that is set in a war zone. Full of on the edge of the seat action. Very nicely done.
The writer of this screen-play obviously sat down and thought one day "let's do a war movie, get a good cast, but heap as many cliches in as we possibly can - and oh yes, make it just a little bit unrealistic"
Hart's War" is a stalag flick which tells of events among the American soldiers suffering hardship in a WWII prison camp. The film scores points for good art, technicals, and performances. However, it trades reality for drama and spins a somewhat convoluted story about racism, murder, and smoldering secrets inside the compound which it finds difficult to sort out and ultimately fizzles in the end. "HW" is solid Hollywood style entertainment which should be a pleasing watch for those into WWII POW dramas.
I don't think I have ever been this divided about a movie in my life. On one hand you have great performances here by Bruce Willis, Terrence Howard and Colin Farrell which director Gregory Hoblit knows how to get. However the problem that makes the film fail is that instead of being the powerful moral drama that it could have been it because slef worshiping Americain hero bullsh*t. Worth seeing for the acting but it's no Saving Private Ryan.
Stunning photography and if you avoid reading any plot summaries (including the bit on the back of the DVD) I guarantee you will enjoy it much more. Best thing Colin Farrell has done to date.
A war movie that transformed into a law-movie - and later, into some kind of drama. The beginning was good, but by the end of the movie I grew to be a little disappointed.
The characters were seemingly given depth - and no depth at all.
All in all it is a pretty good movie, but everything was as if "half-way done".
And Colin Farrell definitely starred this one - Bruce Willis' character was pretty "macho" all the time, but never really proved himself. As if he had no reason to (so, he didn't convince me).
