A good movie, but definitely a product of an earlier time. I doubt that today's audiences would be able to sympathize with a group of hunters capturing animals in Africa with the intent of putting them in zoos.
Sorry people but this is one John Wayne movie I will never watch agine. It is to long and is not very good at all. Sure There is some pretty cool seens in it but the movie is pointless. If they would take out like half of those pointless seens it might bee differnt but other wise this is probley the worst John Wayne movie ever. I like his first movies that are blakc and with and you can get like 20 of them at Wal-Mart all for 5$. And they have the same plots, people and sets almost every time.
not a big john wayne fan but this is actually a pretty good show.
the film focuses more on the relaitonship between character's rather than a plot and it includes some great characters. give it a go
This movie is really terrible, but i love seeing these idiots chase real African wildlife. It is a great movie for when you are sick and don't want to engage many braincells.
Alright here's my thoughts on this funny and beautiful film. John Wayne is great as the leader of this group of animal catchers who are joined by Anna Maria 'Dallas' D'Allesandro a photographer for the zoo that is willing to buy their animals. This film is quite dazzling with its beautiful shots of Africa's wildlife. Red Buttons in fuses a lot of humor into this film as the team driver "Pockets". Henry Mancini's score as I mentioned above also adds a great deal. This is fun light-hearted adventure which is a gem.
one of my favorite John Wayne movies.. he and Red Buttons are both so funny and I love John's "tuff yet tender" romantic side.. doesn't get to show that too often in his films... good family movie too!
Henry Mancini's music score was brilliant. One of John Wayne's better action movies well told. Good romantic interest is well told & believable in performances given. Red Button's role was a gem.
Great film, still enjoyable, with a fine blend of action, romance, and comedy with John wayne in Africa for zoo-supplying animal hunting. And Red Buttons is so funny guy.
Maybe it's the unbelievably patronising and racist attitude towards the locals. Maybe it's the fact that the whole experience revolves around cruelty to/butchery of animals. Maybe it's the f***witted machismo and misogyny of the entire genre. But I f***ing HATE safari films...
Duke being Duke but in Africa. Something different. Catching animals for zoos. I think it'd be frowned upon today but still very enjoyable viewing for the whole family.
I have loved this film since I was a child, and have found even more things to enjoy about it since I've grown up! Now, my 4 year old daughter is in love with all the animals (and she thinks Pockets is so funny). In fact, we have to play it at least once a day! If you haven't seen this film, it is definitely worth your time. The scenery is beautiful as are the animals they capture. This performance of John Wayne is one of his funniest, and the supporting cast are just as great. You have no problem believing these people truly do this for a living, and Red Buttons will keep you laughing.
I thoroughly enjoyed this adventure in Africa. The driving and camera work was top notch. John Wayne is super playing the leader of the group, and is hilarious in his interactions with Dallas (especially the cold cream kissing). My favourite character is definitely Pockets, played perfectly by Red Buttons ... a hot bath? ;-) Baby Elephant Walk is incredibly fun. Is there anyone who scores a movie (writes themes) better than Mancini?
Excellent Adventure Movie. John Wayne played an excellent "Non Western" roll and of course Mancini's music Baby Elephant Walk! This movie is not only adventurous but funny too :)
