This movie taught me that Rock and Roll Movies can be very self deprication and also be a work of art. I would love to make a rock and roll film with Justin Timbelake and touch this greatness. I think it would work.
The Monkees TV show was a ruse; the genius of the REAL band/actors, and their filmmaking friends is shown here is this addictive psychedelic masterpiece, which moves non-stop, with ideas, songs, hilarity and soical commentary.
What happens when you take a group of "musicians" with a television show aimed squarely at teens, and then go and make a Restricted film that cannot be seen by anyone under 18? You get "Head". It sounds a lot more pleasant than it is.
Awesome movie, man. Just like The Beatles' A Hard Day's Night it has no point. The Monkees have a free for all and I love it. The best part is when Davy Jones dances and it keeps switching to him in a balck suit in a white room to a white suit in a black room. It is a really cool movie.
There are some "groovy" individual scenes but most of the interest comes from seeing just how whacked-out and weird of a statement these teen idols were trying to make. "The Porpoise Song" is good...
i love the monkeys... i love this movie it's so stupid it's so weird it really sucks that this was such a big flop when it came out... it makes me think that everyone was on acid in the sixties!!! i always have fun when i watch it!
I haven't seen it but I know it's awesome because it has MICKY DOLENZ (and yes, the rest of the Monkees too I suppose) and I LOVE micky dolenz!!! :D Also, I LOVE Daddy's Song (Davy Jone's showpiece)
Trippy...do love the pre fab four, not as much as you know who but there are some great songs to smoke along to... and they had great pork chop sideburns!!
im a monkees fan and when i saw this movie, i wont lie i was confused very confused. But it is still funny once the confusion wore off. Im glad they tried somthing different from their television show. Im sure i will never understand the movie but that won't stop me from watching it again!
Not easy to understand, but this is a surrealistic jewel! We're talking about a joke on the Hollywood machine, the media, even on The Monkees themselves. The film is a pandemonium of intertwined stories without ending: these are the fantasies of Hollywood and the Monkees Fans for The Monkees. Unfortunately, our four main characters are imprisoned in them!
Bizarre, disorienting, maybe even a little antisocial-- this ain't no Hard Day's Night. The Monkees deliver a sharp psychedelic slap in the face to anyone expecting hippie sweetness and light.
Okay, so the Monkees (and Jack Nicholson) wrote this while they were high, but it's still the best trip of a movie I've ever seen. It's so crazy that it actually makes sense. Besides, who wouldn't love a movie with so many awesome cameos like Frank Zappa, Terri Garr, and Annette Funicello? Seeing this movie on the big screen was one of the most amazing theater experiences I've ever had.
so very very confusing the first time ya see it but man, once you sit and watch it oh... a lot, it's all good. maybe... i had to really ponder over it. i'm sure if i did drugs, it probably would have helped.
A cult classic! I have seen it so many times, & like lots of people, I have no idea what it's about!!! I'm sure no one does! But it is worth having a look at just for the Monkees musical sequences, & for fim students.
Ever thought to yourself " Hey it woulda been cool if during the 60s the monkees hung out with Jack Nicholson did drugs and made a weird psychedelic movie" Well they did and it is pretty cool.
