Interesting to watch for the first time almost 20 years later. The clothes are worth noting and a young Winona Ryder and Christian Slater makes for good fun.
So very. Premise and early dialogue are incredible, but once the movie gets up and running, I'm not sure the writers/director knew what to do with it. The film definitely got away from them in the second half, but guess what...nobody cares. Remarkably prescient and influential (duh).
yay i finally watch this movie.. the movie itself is like a "Godfather" of a teen movie for me.. its ahead of time when it wa released. things that make this film different and unique are the dialogue that sounds weird sometimes (exp." fucking me gently with a chainsaw"), a dark and absurd tone, and the psychotic J.D. The Ending is quite good for me although the original ending is superior..
so yeah i finally saw this one. my favorite parts were when things were good between winona ryder and christian slater. such an awesome couple and made me feel lonely.
This is not your standard gross out or feel good teen film. There is a dark undertone to Heathers that makes it stand out from the rest. Winona Ryder and Christian Slater play a teen Bonnie and Clyde duo who decide to kill their fellow classmates who they believe deserve it. It's a little slow between the murders but there's enough here to keep you interested and Ryder and Slater make an appealing double act. A little dated to be sure though different from your average teen movie.
"Suicide, murder, revenge. It's high school, it's expected."
At Westerburg High School there is a hierarchy of popularity, and you can't get much higher than the clique of "Heathers." Each Heather is beautiful, well-off, and extremely snotty, looking down upon most all of the students attending their school. Veronica (Ryder) is part of this group, though she's not quite as evil and vacuous as the other three girls (played by Shannon Doherty, Lisanne Falk, and Kim Walker). In fact, while Veronica enjoys hanging out with her popular friends, she doesn't quite agree with what they stand for. When a new student named J.D. (Slater) shows up, Veronica falls head over heels for him, even if he is a creepy outcast packing heat. Upon hearing about Veronica's distaste for her friends, J.D. devises a plan to get rid of them using suicide as their supposed motive. Things go well until the plan starts to spin of control, causing Veronica's attempt to end J.D.'s murderous plan once and for all. Heathers is really an anti-John Hughes movie. In Hughes' films there were always outsiders and losers along side popular girls and jocks. However, in those movies there seemed to be a invisible theory that at the end of the day we can all get along. Heathers holds to none of that. Christian Slater fares best, utilizing his outstanding Jack Nicholson acting style. He and Ryder make a demented, funny pair. This movie is perfect for anyone who ever hated their entire high school class, who hated high school, or just had one bad day in high school. Besides the obvious revenge elements, this movie is funny and full of cool stuff to watch for. The colors people wear show their ranks and there are pieces of dialogue that are said during mundane parts of the day that are repeated during what should be a somber scene.
I started out with four stars, mainly due to nostalgia, but every time I see my review I take it down a notch because the more i think about it the more I realize the movie really isn't that good...
Even though it has been awhile since i have seen this movie i really liked it. Christian Slater played a very manipulative person in this movie. A part that he played so well. I am currently trying to find it again so that i can hire it out and watch it. But to no avail.
Veronica Sawyer: I just killed my best friend. J.D.: And your worst enemy. Veronica Sawyer: Same difference.
Released after a slew of John Hughes 80s teen comedies, this is a dark and satirical take on high school life, involving a premise that goes more and more crazy while continuing to be very funny.
Winona Ryder stars as Veronica, a girl who has maintained popularity due to her friendship with the three most popular girls in school, all named Heather. Veronica hates these girls, but keeps up her relations with them anyway.
Kurt Kelly: Hey Ram, doesn't this cafeteria have a no fags allowed rule? J.D.: Well, they seem to have an open door policy for assholes though don't they?
Veronica meets a cool kid in school, J.D. played by Christian Slater. They hit it off immediately and after having some late night fun they visit one of the Heathers, awakening from a hang over. Their visit results in her death. From there, Veronica and J.D. realize that they can perhaps toy with social politics based on the deaths of various people in the popular crowds.
Veronica Sawyer: It's one thing to want someone out of your life, but it's another thing to serve them a wake-up cup full of liquid drainer.
This film succeeds at being a great dark comedy. Its a lot of fun, especially due to its mix of glossy 80s style with the bloody truth of everything. Slater is very cool in his part and Ryder is very fitting in hers.
Its a true dark comedy that has gone on to inspire a number of other non-cliched high school movies.
J.D.: Wanna go out tonight? Catch a movie? Miniature golf? Veronica Sawyer: I was thinking more along the lines of slitting Heather Duke's wrists open, making it look like suicide. J.D.: Ah, now you're talking. I can be up for that. I've already started underlining meaningful passages in her copy of Moby Dick, if you know what I mean.
This movie is about a girl who hangs out with the "in" crowd at a high school but really doesn't like the group. She meets a rebel and he influences her to do some very dark things. This movie was really overrated and not very realistic. The plot was not very well written and it was just not for me.
Heathers made me buy a croquet set. I will love this movie forever just for that.
Truly, if you want to see a movie where some of the most famous has-beens act out a well written script, don't miss Heathers. Just don't try and read Moby Dick afterwards, that book is still full of Fail.
A very well-made dark teen comedy. But its' cult value diminishes over the years. It's more like a photograph taken of its time than the kind of movie you want to sink your teeth into again and again. A little more potent for nostalgia value than as an anytime-anywhere viewing experience. It's just a little too dated. But elements of the movie still hold up. Certain pieces of the music score, or a great line. The dialogue is one of the things that dates it the most. Also the importance of knowing your high school literature makes it kind of a scholastic affair. The surreal imagery in certain scenes is great. It's just a lot less biting these days.
According to Flixster, women tend to rate this movie higher than men. I wonder why. I really like the idea of a high school clique of girls with the same name, another girl who doesn't really like her friends and her hitting it off with a cool yet unpopular guy. There is so much about this movie that makes me smile. Brings new meaning to the term "happy accident".
This is a fantastic flick about suicide and how it impacts people's lives. It revolves around Veronica and her 3 friends named Heather. They are the girls you love to hate and for some want to be. Veronica dates the bad boy in the school and things turn out just a bit too wild for her and at the end she has to choose.
Without a doubt one of the best teen comedies ever(and the inspiration for mean girls),severly underrated but a classic in my eyes.Dark, amazing film, and hey with Slater and Ryder its bound to be good.A must have, my all time no.1 fave film
what a strange movie. it was actually quite good, because it was a very exaggerated and shocking take on popularity in school, and the shock value is what made it entertaining. slater seemed like such a sweet guy and then he goes insane & it's like "whoa". winona ryder is fabulous once again, & although she was sucked into a crazy crazy world, it was great see her get everyone back. this movie had a ridiculous script at times, but most of the time was witty and amazing. "lick it up baby, LICK IT UP."
a very good take on a very dark subject. i love how the didnt make everyone talk and act like typical "movie" teenagers the characters were smart and menising. loved it
