David Mamet is one our best playwrights and filmmakers. This is how to make a heist film not only fun, but also intelligent. You should check out his book, On Directing. It's an essential film school book.

The old cross, double cross then double cross back story of the all too clever thief. A bit of fun, some great names and a 'keep you guessing kind of plot'.

Not as good as the Italian Job. Over the top use of double crossing. DeVito is really good, as is Rockwell. And Hackman is just cool!

David Mamet's Heist is--not unlike many of his previous films--amusing, manicured, and fraught with an awkward tension. If you've seen The Spanish Prisoner or House of Games, you'...( read more read more... )re by now familiar with the plot-subverting gambit of the double-cross turned triple- and then quadruple-cross. Heist sticks to the formula. Likewise, the quips and laconic wit that adorn what can most accurately be called "Mametspeak" are again on display: "Cute as a pail full of kittens," for instance, and "Everybody needs money; that's why they call it money." What you haven't yet seen in a Mamet film is the magisterial charm of Gene Hackman. In the role of Joe Moore, an aging criminal out for one final score before cashing in, Hackman shows us all (Mamet included) how it's done, embodying tough-but-clever effortlessly. Delroy Lindo, as Joe's partner Bobby, picks up on Hackman's ultra-cool and gives plenty in return. While the script and the remaining cast (Danny Devito, Rebecca Pidgeon, Sam Rockwell) are serviceable, Heist is entirely Hackman's show to steal. --Fionn Meade

It's pure dynamite. Sizzeling and exhilerating. A razor-sharp crime thriller. One of the best and smartest heist films ever made. Snaps and crackels with great suspense and action. awsome twist and turns all the way to the end. Terifficly written and well-crafted. A brilliant cast of actors. Gene Hackman has never been better. A cool, captivating and fantastic performance. Delroy Lindo is teriffic. Danny DeVito is explosive.

Another movie about smart people robbing. They don't have much slick and style but they work well even with just a few people. Gene Hackman is really sly and smart, always manage to outsmart the people trying to get his gold, especially the last part when he painted black paint on some gold rod and the wife turns up with the bad guy and snatch them away but then they are not the real gold. He drove away in his Ford pickup with all the real gold.

Gene Hackman heads up an otherwise lacklustre cast in a heist movie about an ageing thief who is blackmailed into performing one last job. As hackneyed as that synopsis sounds, it doesn't quite sum up just HOW uninspired this all is. The dialogue is cliched and occasionally embarrassing, the plot implausible and lacking in humour, and all of it's so-called twists can be seen lumbering over the horizon from a mile away. Not completely awful, but in the end it's nothing more than 90 minutes of "So what?"

There are a few movies that I keep JUST to watch the actors doing their work, and this is one of them. Gene Hackman, as usual, is amazing.

David Mamet writes some of the best dialog I have ever heard in movies, and Heist is a great example of that.
"Is he cool?" "My mother fucker is so cool, when he goes to bed, sheep count him."

"How long have they been married?" "How long is a Chinaman's name?"

This was so retarded, I can still remember one of many really bad quip's from this movie, "shorter than a china mans name!" lol... How embarrassing for all involved.

The 'femme fatale' switches sides too often for us to be shocked by anything Mamet throws in our direction.

I could tell from the dialogue that this was a Mamet piece. And that's bad: you shouldn't be able to TELL. It means the actors aren't delievering it right. This movie has its moments, but kind of falls apart near the end.

Jimmy: So, is he going to be cool?
Pinky: My motherfucker is so cool, when he goes to bed, sheep count him.

What's great about David Mamet movies is the dialog. Everyone speaks the same language, they are all in the moment, and they all no exactly what the other means, even when it becomes cryptic or metaphoric.

Heist is appropriately slick because of the choice of actors and it a lot of fun to see everyone riff off of each other.

Gene Hackman and Delroy Lindo star as the thieves who have to take that one last job before retiring. Danny De Vito is their mean spirited employer. Sam Rockwell and Ricky Jay also step into the game for added coolness.

Bobby Blane: You know why the chicken crossed the road? Because the road crossed the chicken.

Many twists, double and triple crosses unfold, and everything is played very cool. There is even a sweet and realistic gun fight towards the end. Enjoyable and played out like a 70s crime movie with slick Mamet dialog.

Bergman: OK, you want to wrap it up? Or you want to just stand around here, try to guess my real name?
Joe Moore: What is your real name?
    Bergman: Rumpelstiltskin.
Joe Moore: What was it before you changed it?

A great heist movie, although Mamets trademark dialogue is love-it-or-hate-it, and can get a little annoying.

A very enjoyable conmen/heist cat and mouse game. It does follow the structure of the genre, but manages to be entertaining even within those constraints

    Synopsis:
Kate Hudson twinkles as the heroine of How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, a magazine writer assigned to date a guy, make all the mistakes girls make that drive guys away (being clingy, talking in ...( read more )baby-talk, etc.), and record the process like a sociological experiment. However, the guy she picks--rangy Matthew McConaughey--is an advertising executive who's just bet that he can make a woman fall in love with him in ten days; if he succeeds, he'll win a huge account that will make his career. The set-up is completely absurd, but the collision of their efforts to woo and repel creates some pretty funny scenes. McConaughey's easy charm and Hudson's lightweight impishness play well together and the plot, though strictly Hollywood formula, chugs along efficiently. At moments Hudson seems to channel her mother, Goldie Hawn, to slightly unnerving effect. --Bret Fetzer

Clever and well scripted movie about crime and deception. Things start off slowly, but after the first 20 minutes the sly dialogue and deceptive twists begin. Good clean fun that suffers from mundane direction.

With all the fine actors in this film, I thought that this would be a great movie. Unfortunately, this one fails to deliver the goods and left me trying to make sense of the whole story!

Can't Rebecca Pidgeon just get Mamet's coffee during his films? She is the worst actress of all time.
