Plot: The mythical world starts a rebellion against humanity in order to rule the Earth, so Hellboy and his team must save the world from the rebellious creatures.
Its bigger and so much better than the first one. All the elements where the first one fails, the second one succeeds with a much better result.

Do you see this face -> :(
This is not the face of someone who thinks that the sequel was the most brilliant peice of cinema ever.
And that hurts cos I was really psyched about it. I wanted it to be good, I wanted Del Toro to expand and make this one even better than the first. Cos the first one was cool, not great, but cool - it definately could have been improved on... I just don't think he did. :(
There are some good scenes, just not enough :(
Three sideways frowny faces from me.
Directed by: Guillermo Del Toro.
Starring: Ron Perlman, Selma Blair, Doug Jones, Seth MacFarlane, Luke Goss.
<<" You must remain fock-yoosed at all times!"..."Fock-yoosed? You know, with that accent, I wouldn't use that word." >>
The story continues soon after the first. The bureau continue to stay under the radar while saving the world every way that they can, but Hellboy starts to feel the pressure of being secluded and different from the world and must face the problems of it all while a mythical world starts a war against the humans and the bureau must stop them before the Golden Army rises.
Del Toro certainly had the strain of competing with the step up in quality of comic book films coming out in the last few years that easily topped his first Hellboy film, so no doubt the pressure was on him this time around...and he does not disappoint as expected, but he has also created something leagues above the first.
What I always felt a bit iffy about with the first one was actually two relatively big points in film...dialogue and story. The characters reigned fine and definitely set up a nice starting gate (aside from the unnecessary young lead character and him being the main focus), but everything felt a little too stale for my liking and the film never jumped beyond its visual brilliance...thats different here. The story is easily more acceptable here but isn't the greatness one would hope for, but what really steps up underneath it all is the characters and especially the dialogue. Richer and easier to like and blend into, the characters each carry a strong center that really is the best thing you can do with a film and with wittier, stronger dialogue, anyone can forget a slightly disappointing plot.
But alongside these main characters that shine, we have an array of sub characters that each have there own little qualities that are no doubt fascinating to watch and when a lot of them are the mythical creatures visioned by the origins of the comic book and Del Toro's brilliant mind, its down to how Del Toro brings it to screen...do you really need to ask if he succeeded or not? The man is simply a visionary and easily the greatest in modern cinema. Matched with some exquisite set design and physical creature effects, his brilliant mind is stamped on every single frame with every single character and object, it really is his best work outside of Pan's Labyrinth and he has easily shown us by now that he is the right man for The Hobbit.
The performances are great, as expected. Ron Perlman is...well Hellboy. We all knew that from the first film. He walks, talks and breathes Hellboy, he's the comic book characters essence in human form and continues to show that here. Selma Blair has her moments to shine but is also balanced with some mediocre delivery, she isn't exactly the greatest actress of this age but her great charisma pulls her through. Doug Jones continues to show he can work as an actor rather then a man behind many masks and Seth MacFarlane, the genius, really is a welcome addition to this world and adds brilliant wit to his character.
Simply put, Hellboy 2 is leaps and bounds above its predecessor. Richer characters, better dialogue, brilliantly and masterfully directed by Guillermo Del Toro and nicely performed by the entire cast. All those points are the mains to make a great film and if it does them well, its obvious that it served its purpose, in this case...brilliantly.
well i went 2 c it @ da cinemas n it was amazin like i thouht it wud b i really liked it n u gt 2 c hellboy in a different light in this 1

Better than the Dark Knight! The troll city was amazing. They could have made a movie about Hellboy buying groceries in the troll city and I would have still loved it.
See this movie.
Quite cheesy at times, but very imaginative, entertaining and action-packed. Also, it's better than the first.
I hate this movie for so many reasons. I hate the acting, the love interests, the wussy princess, the monsters, the graphics, the SINGING, the plot, the ROBOT !!!, the only thing I like is the evil hot gothy guy...and is it just me or did the evil side have a very valid point? I was on their side the whole time.
I really enjoyed this movie and I would watch it again in a heartbeat. Nifty little shifts going on in the movie, so keep an eye on the details.
Much better follow up to the first Hellboy movie from a few years back. This time the big red fucker has to stop the creatures from another, mythical type world taking over the,er,world.Everything about this is better than the first; Ron Pearlman has that dry wit down as Hellboy, the fight scences and action sequences are bigger and better and Guillermo del Toro has come up with some cool creatures.Oh,and Selma Blair looks fit.Luke Goss is also great as the main villain, being cool and quite menacing at the same time, which is what most comic book style villains aspire to do!And quite a sweet ending to,more so than the usual action blockbusters anyway.Good all round fun with plenty of action and cool shit!
70 000 armies ! He earns two kids in the end and I wonder whether he wanted to retire with her .
bonikingv
I love the fact that in this sequel del Toro shows off much more as there was a bigger budget so we get to see how the creatures get even more fantastic. The problem is that the humour Hellboy has in the first one is lacking due to this ego trip. It does make it slightly more fantastic to watch though, and thus about balances out. A great mix of both for the next one please & I'll be in heaven!
It's a shame that the sequel to Hellboy was such a labour of love for Guillermo del Toro because it makes the disappointment even more bitter. Is this REALLY the film he wanted?
As far as I can see, what we have is essentially another sell-out by a quality director. It speaks volumes that it was awarded the dreaded 12a certificate (surely now a signifier of self censorship in the name of financial gain). Harry Potter is actually darker than this - and at least they bother with story and characterisation to underscore the set pieces!
The only thing HB2 has going for it is the visuals. I loved the background story, as played by (CGI animated) wooden puppets, near the beginning of the film. Even though it kind of sets the tone for the almost childlike feel of the film (sanitising any darkness or scares) it was still pretty impressive. It almost made you forgive the HORRIBLE cornball acting of the boy playing the young Hellboy - feeling more like a cast-off from a Rice Crispies commercial!
The creature design is imaginative and original. Some of the best I have seen. There is a more organic feel than the previous Hellboy film. Monsters and creatures are made of wood, plants and rock and a new hero is made entirely of ectoplasm! But this latter character's credibility is undermined considerably by giving him the most ridiculous cartoon accent and dialogue. It was meant to be funny - well if you think Toby Maguire doing his Travolta/Hitler routine in Spiderman3 is funny then you'll think Hellboy2 is hilarious!
But I think that is another big problem with this film - the awkward attempts at humour only serve to undermine any depth to characters or story (Hellboy and Liz having domestics at every turn was straight out of a teen comedy) and it also diffuses any real scares or suspense so that the monsters were about as threatening as Wile E. Coyote was to Road Runner. In HB1 we had a creepy Rasputin and a rubber clad, blade wielding Nazi. In HB2 we have our hero fighting, what is in effect, (as impressive as it is) a giant tree!!
Maybe I'm missing the point? If you want a big sprawling cartoon that you can take a 6 year old to, then this is your thing. But if you want depth of character, scares and suspense then you are gonna have to look elsewhere.

The mythical world starts a rebellion against humanity in order to rule the Earth, so Hellboy and his team must save the world from the rebellious creatures.
It's four years since the first release of Hellboy and watched it aged 16. I absolutly loved the first one, unlike many it seems. Was hoping 2 would be better than the first and it surpassed my expectations on many levels. Most likely in my top 5 of 2008 excellent!
Hellboy 2 already showcased glimpses on Hellboy's passes and 2 opens up with even more. We see John Hurt's character reading Hellboy the tale of the golden Army. Imeadiatly we are shown bits of De Toro's wonderful storytelling and cinematrogarphy, from what he did in Pans Labyrinth and the first film. Hellboy ashowcases some wonderful cinematraphy that is sadly not evident in many Summer blockbusters. For example in last year's Spiderman 3, which was all over the place, there was no clear foucss on anything. Hellboy tells the story and that's that. That great thing about De Toro's storytelling is that he doesn't try to manipulate the audience with several sub-plots and lack luster screenplays. De Toro's storytelling, like the first is specfic and intelligently made and not at all did I get irritated by the film.
The only thing that dissapointed me was the absence of Rupert Evans(Myers) who I thought brought a lot to the first film and of course diverted my eyes on him. However the film does make up for the absence of John Hurt And Rupert Evans and makes up for that with the new character of Johan Krauss. Krauss brings some authority to the film, but in a good way. For instance is is looked up to by the character of Manning, which is constanly being made fun out of by Hellboy. I loved the accent of Krauss, which is totally not what you were expectating when he arrives. For example he's a German "glasshole" as Hellboy calls him. Again I think that's the genuis of Del Toro, who brilliantly plays on our perceptions of characters in cinema. Just brilliant.
Acting in Hellboy is excellent. Like in Hellboy, Ron Pearlman is brilliant as Hellboy and is posisbly the coolest comic Book hero you're ever likely to see. Pearlman is Hellboy and I think he'll forever be remember for playing him and nothing else. His mannerisms, walk talk is just exceptional and beats Spider-man anyday. Selma Blair is again, like the first film brilliant as Liz and seems to have matures since we last saw her in the first film. Luke Goss is excellent as Prince Nuada and totally unexpected aswell. Although i would have like to see him used more but that's a minor flaw. I also thought David Hyde Pearce's voice for Abe Sapien was perhaps better in Hellboy but by the end of the film you wouldn't notice at all. Also worth mentioning Jeffrey Tambor as Tom manning, who was pretty funny to watch.
The set design in Hellboy 2 is incredible to watch ans surpasses Hellboy in every respect. From the xtrodinary fight sequence swith Hellboy and Nuada, to the scenes in the streets of Manhatten you can't help but feel compelled to watch and marvel in the greatness of Guillermo del Toro. I really hope Hellboy 2 gets the attention it deserves as the cinematoraphy was brilliant to watch. Stunning even.
The whole cast have great chemistry and not at one point to you feel irritated. The scenes with Hellboy and Liz are not pretencious and you really do feel for them. I have to mention the scene in which Hellboy and Ape are singing alone, to Barry Mannilow. Hilarious to watch, mainly because it's totally not was you would epexct to happen from this two "alien-like" characters. Also because both are drunk at this time. Brilliant!
Hellboy 2 is better than the first and contains a wonderfull screenplay and wonderfully shot and acted. In my top 5 of the year. Highly recomended!
Really disappointed by this. Del Toro's visuals and creatures were to his usual high standards however the film ultimately fails on its poor plotting, heavy handed attempts at romantic moments and a climax that falls away into cliches. The difference between this film and the first is that this one focuses too much on the extremely weak and unconvincing love story where the first only hinted at it only having the romantic payoff in the end. Where this film works is in the beautiful detail of some of its creatures but also in the lighter moments where it revels in its own stupidity. Any breaks into the serious side feel forced rather than sincere. After Pan's Labyrinth I expected great things from Del Toro. I thought Hellboy 2 would be the film that realised all the potential I saw in the original. In the end it failed even to live up to the first.
*Minor spoilers*
Wow, what an improvement on the 1st instalment. This movie was visually incredible, Del Toro's creatures and set designs are amazing and original. I loved the winged demon and the bone eating Tooth Fairies, very creepy. The only thing I didn't really like were the cheesy one liners from Hellboy himself, for example when he smashes new character krauss's glass helmet he calls him a 'glasshole'... Oh dear! There are some pretty funny moments though, and I love that despite his appearence Hellboy is a sensitive soul. The humans that judge him really got to me, especially that bitch who doesn't even thank him for saving her baby... Deep breaths, it's only a movie! Luke Goss's prince had some impressive choreographed fight scenes. It was an enjoyable experience.
just as good as the first. Its funny as hell and i LOVE the fight scences and fish boy is so sweet and is kinda creepy. I wanna see what the kid looks like... red but has fire ...hope so can wait for hellboy III. Go watch it and no its not about the devil per say.
This movie just sucks... I watched it and I just falled asleep becuase all the story was totally predictable and obvious. I never get the first one, and this is just awful.
This proves that De Toro can do things by two. First he did Blade 2 and now Hellboy 2 which I have to say was totally brillant. The golden army is just that PURE GOLD. PURE GOLD SCRIPT, PURE GOLD ACTING and even PURE GOLD special effects. The visuals are breathtaking and stunning to watch and I have to say when CGI is done right it looks great and this film shows that in spades. The cgi in this was stunning, mind blowing and incredible to watch. Most of the time I couldn't take my eyes off the cgi creatures as they were done so beautifully that they looked so real. This film has everything, great action sequences, quite a few hilariously funny moments, great memorable characters and great fun to watch. It contains the best robotic punch up that I have ever seen since Terminator. Luke goss also seems to do things by two as well first he worked with Del Toro on Blade 2 as the villain and now he works with Del Toro in Hellboy 2 the golden army as yes you guessed it a villain. I must say that Luke is good at playing villains. Unlike most xomic book adaptations, this one shows the emotional side of the characters which is heartwarming to see. Abe gets a crush, Hellboy and Abe share a karaoke moment that is both touching and funny at the same time. Also the inclusion of the new characters like the tooth fairies, the troll market, the angel of death and the bureau's own alien suspects are a great addition to the sequel. Del Toro goes all out for this one and it shows his visual quite vividly Its like Hellboy meets Pan's Labyrith it's weird, bizzare yet captivating and wonderful. Roll on Hellboy 3
Better than the first!!
Del Toro is a great fantasy filmmaker like any other, this one is a lot of fun and the monsters are amazing!
Hellboy 2 suprised me on a astounding level, considering i wasnt much of a fan of the original and i had my doubts about this sequel. The change in direction made all the difference, simply put, the movie was much better then the original. The characters and animation were something out of a fairytale, it made you feel as if true magic was taking place. Amazing animation, costume and designs years ahead of its time, and the plot was much more rich then the original brewing with action and adventure, and of course the wit and comedic appeal that Ron Pearlman brings to the table. Hellboy 2 has a unique aspect to it, riddled with fantasy and wonder, and this is deffineantly a film worth watching.
Not being a fan of the first Helboy movie, I certainly had my doubts about this one. But what I got was a movie which could be in my top 10 at the end of the yearr. The plot was good and not too over the top, but I think it was the action elements that impressed me most.
