I hated this when I first saw it because Rob Gordon was every guy I was meeting in San Jose. Now, I'm not sure... I guess I understand men a bit more and know that most of them have this tendency. I will say it was one of my favorite Jack Black roles and as I watch him slip into nothingness... its nice to go back to this one and remember he had talent before he was an icon of retarded humor.
This is an indearing little indie film. That shows the basic male insict when they dump, (after a certian amount of times). Defernatly worth a watch, evan if you don't like music or little films.
I heart John Cusack. This is a strangely enjoyable film. The lead character is a bit of an a-hole but yet I am riveted. Iben was such a sweetheart, here. I like how flawed everyone is, no tring to hide blemishes here. Refreshing.
Falls under the 'Student Cool' category. Needs a second viewing...and the fact that i wanna watch it again so soon after the first time means it's obviously a good film! Cus i rock.
Helps if you like the soundtrack, which wasn't my thing.
This is probably the most cynical romantic comedy I've ever seen, and it's damn good. Carried by a cast of likeable and interesting characters, the film makes a lot of really interesting statements about relationships and people in general.
Spin this baby! This is both a primer on the agonies of modern love and a keenly observed examination of music geeks and their universe. Little crazy story of a man's attempt to determine why his relationship never last, John Cusack is mocking, analytical, and self-deprecating.
i can't say how much i love this movie. this is the movie that make me a cinephilia like now. i watched it at high school and i still love it now.its like a visual diary of a deppressing man.
just another fun movie about a record shop and romance with john cusack. He's good as the lead, but Jack Black totally steals the show when he's on camera. overall a good film.
Perfectly cast, realistic romcom, with just the right ballance of serious relationship issues and comedy, often with a lingering bittersweet aftertaste despite feeling outwardly uplifted. This is life, and it makes you smile. (Plus, the soundtrack is ace.)
The film succeeds largely due to this being the type of character John Cusack excels at playing. I do wish however that his buddies had been given more to do as their plots were pretty thin.
God this "comedy" is awful. It's one of those whiny "some guys have no luck" kind of movies where this guy mopes around and laments about things not having worked out the way they should have. I tried to stick with it - I watched the whole thing. But he's a terrible character. Plus, Jack Black's characters... they're annoying. He's a very good actor. But damn it, he's just annoying. So, the only character I liked was the other record store employee, the quiet guy who barely says a word. And I hate the kind of narration that goes on in the movie. This "comedy" is only for those "hip" people who are too hip for the rest of us. You know? I just can't dig this movie. I don't know who can. It's just terrible.
Better than I remembered! I love the honesty in this far-from-perfect relationship. As always, John Cusack is great as this "loser" who loses himself in self-pity when his girlfriend leaves him. He then starts to analyse his previous breakups. The people around him help get a little bit of absurdity and humour in the mix. Great dark romantic comedy!
Picture perfect unsentimental Romantic comedy, about nuerosis, growing up, obsession, fetish, fantasy, memory, music, and top 5's. This book takes place in London, but the universal appeal of music makes it's transfer to Chicago seemlessly natual (we are all united by pop songs). The characters are deeply flawed, honest, and funny. This is one of best examples of voice over narrative and breaking the fourth wall for direct audience adresses working perfectly, without drawing too much attention to itself. It's excellent, got a great soundtrack, some jokes that are likely to go over a few non music-heads heads, but for the most apart it's a film almost anyone can relate to in some aspect, be it relationships, music, or obsessive listing. But enough has been written and said about this movie, just see it. Good times.
There were a lot of new ideas and great things happening in this movie, Putting my loathing of John Cusack aside, his character was convincing and overall made the movie better.
A very fun and superbly-written comedy with a cool cast and a comic romantic story worth watching at least two times. This is the first time that I really loved a character of Joan Cusack. Two thumbs up! :)
