This movie lacks a story line, any conflict whatsoever, character development or meaning. It also lacks a pulse, High School Musical 3 is a dead movie.
  • March 9, 2009
It's the senior year for the East High Wildcats, and futures beyond high school hallways and lunchroom gossip are being planned. For Troy (Zac Efron), Gabriella (Vanessa Hudgens), and Chad (Corbin Bleu), the road to adulthood is complicated, involving painful choices in both life...( read more) and love. With the year winding down, Gabriella encourages everyone to sign up for the spring musical, putting the kibosh on brat Sharpay's (Ashley Tisdale) plans to topline her own show, with supplementary help from brother Ryan (Lucas Grabeel). With the days ticking away to graduation, the group works out the moves for the big show, while Troy and Gabriella contemplate the concept of college careers away from each other. The film has about as much understanding of what high school is really like as an episode of Saved By the Bell. It's bright and energetic. It's also antiseptic, looking and feeling more like product than a movie. The actors are all smiley, attractive, and utterly indistinguishable from one another. There are a lot of songs, mostly of the dance-pop variety, none of which have a single memorable hook or chorus. Ortega channeling the gods of Berkeley, Fosse, and Kelly to construct intricate foot parades for the camera, with special emphasis on theatrical scenery to reinforce the high school musical atmosphere of "High School Musical".

    THE MOVIE OUTLINE

"As seniors in high school ,Troy and Gabriella struggle with the idea of being separated from one another as college approaches. Along with the rest of the Wildcats, they stage a spring musical to address their experiences, hopes and fears about their future. "

    MY APPRAISAL

    STANDING OVATION??
    WHAT THE F*CK?

Never in my life I saw the theatre so crowded and deserve "THEATRE WITH MOST NOISES" award. Gosh! Everything's terrible. The theatre was soooo damn noisy. They laugh at either funny or unfunny scenes and throw unimportant jokes. They RUINED THE MOVIE SOUL! I don't know how many times I rolled my eyes and switch looks with my best friend Inez. They gave standing ovation I never find in No Country For Old Man. When Zac Efron appeared on screen, they cheered!!!

No progress. Still very very bad. The script is extremely DULL, the dialogue is still dumb and cheesy. Vanessa Hudgens is like what, worst actress ever? Zac Efron is good looking, but he's.. whatever. Ashley Tisdale's annoying as ever, though I adore her pink stuffs (I'll have some of those one day). YOU HAVE TO KNOW THE DIFFERENCE between "a character that was meant to annoy other character in the film" and "a character being such a pain in the audience's asses". But the soundtracks' are OK and pretty enjoyable (try: Now or Never, Can I Have This Dance?, I Want It All). My suggestion: quit acting and start some recordings instead. They're suppose to be heard but not seen!! Overall it's an OK movie for 8 year olds, but a PAIN IN THE ASS if you're not one anymore.

If you really want to know how bad the movie really is, read Nemka Jay's review on HSM 1.

Dammit, Disney! STOP MAKING FOOL OF YOURSELF!

I gave this movie a shot, i was just curious on how a TV movie series turned to the big screen would turn out and it really had a dull plot and random musical outbreaks unlike other musical films. This is a major skip it in my opinon.

Armond White, The New York Press

HSM3 is now about indoctrinating a captive audience to buy hype and follow consumerist routine. It might make millions, but it's a betrayal. full review

Anthony Lane, The New Yorker

Its winning formula is driven not by narrative but by what isn't there: no sex, no drugs, and no rock and roll-- unless you count the logjam of thundering power ballads. full review

Moira MacDonald, Seattle Times

Everything works out! Everyone's hair looks great! Some of the kids end up at Juilliard! I hope real high school is like this. full review

Since when shouldn't it be fun to spend 90 minutes or so watching good-looking young people, singing and dancing relatively well? full review

The movie sounds as though it was recorded in a padded chamber instead of a bustling school, and it looks like it came from some alternate world, one that basks in the eternal sunshine of the spotless... full review

For all its unforgivable blandness, High School Musical opens young audiences to the charms of this most transporting of movie genres. full review

What's unfortunate isn't that this is a bad film, but rather that it had the potential to be such a good one and fell short. full review

Efron and co-star Vanessa Hudgens have charm. But director Kenny Ortega buries them in formula dances, forgettable tunes and dialogue that makes Grease sound like Greek tragedy. full review

Every comment here makes me laugh, hard.
High School Musical is for sure, teenagers.
I saw the movie because I saw the other two. Why stop watching a trilogy when you saw the first two? I did not like none of them, but I'm still watching...
Zac Efron CANT sing, I repeat he CANT sing. He sounds like a smurf. The teenagers looks to perfect to take 'em serious and that is why I laugh when people takes the comments and this movie serious....
