I first heard of this film when I watch a 30 second parody (go to angryalien.com to check it out). I loed watching the short cartoon, so I thought I'd check out the original film as well. Christopher Lambert fits the role of an immortal nomad perfectly. And Clancy Brown was a good choice for the main villain, a power hungry tyrant out to kill other immortals and claim ultimate power for himself. The only thing that disappointed me was at the very end. But if you haven't seen this film, I'll let you find out for yourself. Apart from that, I'd definitely recommend this, especially if cult classics are your cup of tea
Okay, first off, I'm a highlander fan. I have the complete series, the coat, and the sword. Having said that, this is the movie that started it for me. While I love the series, I think this movie was great. It was dark, and told a great story.
A few minor changes could've made this into a timeless classic, rather than a dusty cult-classic. The first half was pretty good / intriguing. I really liked the flashbacks to all the time periods, especially the Scottish Highlands. The fight between Sean Connery the bad guy in the tower was SWEET, easily the highlight of the film. However, the second half focused too much on the present day and showing how "creepy" and 1980's the badguy was. Highlander's developing relationship with 20th century forensics specialist felt empty compared to his original Scottish wife. In the end, some cool stuff, but strange story, and weird ending. (this movie would've also been a lot cooler had they worked in William Wallace somehow.)
I love the concept of immorality but the movie all in all was a bit disappointing. I was expecting something more philosophical, more in-depth about immortality, but turns out it's about swords and sword fights. But it's not bad, it's action packed, Sean Connery and Clancy Brown's performance plus Queen's soundtracks keeps you hooked.
Imagine living forever. You would see the world progress, and you would gain knowledge from living through the centuries. Think of the stories you could tell, and all the places you could travel to. You would be able to experience what many have only dreamed of. Unfortunately, some people just like you want to kill you, and they've been wanting to do this for several hundred years. Other than that, live your life to the fullest!
A cool film. Very "80's", but the ancient and medieval settings, including the modern atmosphere and the battle scenes were outstanding. A most see action/fantasy contemporary classic.
Definitely a classic this movie is action packed and with one of the best (and consequently overused) lines in film history "THERE CAN ONLY BE ONE!" lol Needless to say this film is the greatest fantasy-adventure ever made (yes... better than Conan) and Sean Connery has one of the best cameos that I can think of. I will definitely buy this when I have the chance and Christopher Lambert is amazing! I love his Irish/British weird-ass dialect/accent its crazy!! Also.... is it just me or does Christopher Lambert look EXACTLY like Thomas Jane.... it was driving me insane throughout the movie.
From the dawn of time we came; moving silently down through the centuries, living many secret lives, struggling to reach the time of the Gathering; when the few who remain will battle to the last. No one has ever known we were among you... until now.
Connor Macleod (Christopher Lambert) was born in 1518 in the Highlands of Scotland, in 1985 he still lives and walks among us. He is an immortal, and was told this by Sanchez Villa-Lobos Ramirez (Sean Connery) another immortal, who teaches Connor the ways of the immortals and swordsmanship, since the only way to kill another immortal is to cut off their head. A evil immortal named Kurgan (Clancy Brown) is out to kill the other immortal to get the 'ultimate price': the spiritual ability to know everything. Maybe the plot line to "Highlander" sounds a bit silly and cheesy, but the movie itself is very entertaining and enjoyable. Christopher Lambert is fine in the leading role and Sean Connery is good as his mentor, but most impressive is Clancy Brown who perfectly plays one of the creepiest villains on film. "Highlander" is worth watching, but it's not the classic some people make it out to be, and make sure that you enjoy rock band Queen since they play most of the soundtrack.
wow just saw this 4 the 1st time in ages n forgot how good these movies were i think these are great action movies 2 watch...this is just soo funn 2 watch...i think the script was really funn..the scenery in scotland was really good/nice 2 see throughout the movie n i just think that this is really enjoyable 2 watch n i think that the band queen are in the soundtrack for 1 of these movies but not sure which 1
A bit of brainless fun... I would have liked to have seen more about his past but it wasn't a bad way to waste a Saturday night! Still find it pretty stupid that about the only Scottish person in the film didn't play a Scot!
A story which easily can be taken for something childish and silly, but that turns out to be complicated and tragic. The scene that shows how Heather grows older while Connor doesn't is very powerfull, complete with Queen's "Who wants to live forever".
Every now and then a movie comes along that has a little bit of everything - drama, comedy, action, romance. Add a great soundtrack and you've got a classic in the making.
This film had a very cool, and very original concept, and that?s about where my praise will end because everything about the execution of that concept is terrible. The acting, dialogue, and production values here are all bordering on incompetent and there seem to be major gaps in the screenplay. The film has ages terribly and the Queen soundtrack is distractingly inappropriate. I will give it some credit for the climactic fight which was an improvement over the rest of the film, but that?s not saying much. I?ve heard the sequels are even worse, which is interesting because this original is pretty bad to begin with. I think this would be a great series to do a high budget reboot of, because the idea itself could work if it was done right.
One of the two "Queen" scored films that are more 80's than most can handle. Nothing likea French guy playing a Scottish guy...and a Scottish guy playing an Egyptian Spainard
A Scotsman born in the Highlands in the 1500?s is left for dead on a battlefield. Connor cannot die, he is immortal. Traveling through time, Connor battles other immortals for the ultimate prize. The only way he can die is by having his head severed off in battle. Now as the few immortals left in the world come to New York City for what the immortals call The Gathering, one wants the prize for the good of man, the other wants the prize for the destruction of mankind.
Highlander is a cult classic. While viewing this film you can see the cheesiness of the eighties incorporated into the film. The premises of the story is fantastic and people that love fantasy mixed with action will be pleased with the film. The acting is good for a popcorn action movie and the direction is solid. The only downfall of the movie is what transpired after the movie. The countless sequels and the movies not following canon with the original storyline, even though the sequels can be enjoyable if each movie is taken as an individual story and not a timeline of an entire universe. Highlander receives four quickening out of five for creating a masterpiece in cult cinema.
Hey, any movie that opens to a professional wrestling match and contains a snap-together sword has to be good! ...right?! ...am I right? Oh, and Sean Connery rules
