The December 1989 fall of Communist Dictator Nicolae Ceausescu sets the stage for co-writer/director Radu Muntean's wry action drama following one perplexed militia's attempt to find out just who has ...( read more  read more... )assumed control of Bucharest once the despised tyrant has fallen. Romanian despot Ceausescu has been overthrown by a combination of military coup and civil insurrection, and now Lt. Neagu (Adi Carauleanu) has been assigned the task of maintaining the peace in a small Bucharest suburb. When Lt. Neagu and his heavily armored militia squad hear news that pro-Ceausescu forces are attempting to wrestle control of a national television station away from anti-Ceausescu counterparts, ambitious militiaman Costi (Paul Ipgate) suggests that the troupe leave to help fend off the terrorists who would see the feared dictator reinstated. After Costi slips away from the militia to help defend the television station, he is recruited to help defend a house full of protestors from terrorists. Inexplicably, Costi himself is accused of terrorism by the very people he was attempting to help and is forced to convince the protestors of his democratic beliefs. Realizing that Costi has deserted the militia and frightened that he will be held responsible for losing his soldier, Lt. Neagu and his squad discover that their mission is far from over after arriving as Costi's suburban home.~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

this is not a historical movie, but tries to recreate the emotion of those days from the point of view of ordinary people who participated in the events.

This one is part of the Romanian new wave by young talented directors that is currently taking place. It was very well received on the 2007 Rotterdam film festival and gets a staggering 8.5/10 on imdb! We follow a pantser unit of internal affairs during the night that Ceaucescu f...( read more)lees his pallace at the Romanian Revolution in december 1989. The soldiers are captured between their hope that the revolution will succeed and their duty to defend the regime. One of the soldiers deserts and participated in the revolution but he gets caught up in the chaos. The story is filled with black ironic Eastern-European humor. Overall I was bit disappointed because of all the hype on this film but I'm sure it will appeal to many.

Benefitting from hype surrounding "the Balkan new wave" led by films like 12:08 East of Bucharest and 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days, this tale set during the fall of Ceausescu was the opposite of Owl and the Sparrow in that the concept and structure were outstanding, yet the scene...( read more)s themselves were too slight and lacking in punch to really resonate.
