Plot: A newspaper editor uses every trick in the book to keep his ace reporter ex-wife from remarrying.
One hell of a great screwball comedy. Rosalind Russell is a total Goddess in it and Cary Grants performance is one of his best of his career. The pacing, the dialouge, every line, is complete genius. Love it.
Sharp to the point and streaming with chuckles, His Girl Friday rests on the sturdy shoulders of Grant and the commanding presence of Russel; befitting a film that focus on the notions of dishonesty - be it Grant's immoral newspaper editor or the crime caper happening behind the hilarious relationship quibbles. Though the script tends to meander in a line a little too straight at times, it is Grant's timing of delivery that makes the film a joy to watch.
Love Cary Grant! He was hilariously manipulative, but mind u, she wanted to be manipulated! LoL :D Recommended!
Super fast dialog. Rosalind Russell is my favorite pairing with Cary Grant. She comes close to stealing his thunder a few times, which I've not seen other female leads accomplish with him.
Excellent movie! Lines are all delivered with perfect timing. Rosalind Russell is superb and Cary Grant is pure magic!
"I wouldn't cover the burning of Rome for you if they were just lighting it up!"
His Girl Friday is a hysterically funny screwball comedy masterpiece by one of cinema's greatest directors, Howard Hawks. This film is purely one of the funniest classic comedies I've ever seen. Although roughly 70 years old the film is still a wickedly enchanting oddball comedy, and its original impact has only marginally dissipated.
Based on a successful Broadway smash (that was filmed as a movie) by Ben Hecht and Charles MacArthur, the film follows conniving newspaper editor Walter Burns (Grant) who works for the Morning Post. Former ace reporter Hildy Johnson (Russell) returns to the Morning Post to tell her ex-husband Walter that there's a new lover in her life, and to bid him farewell one last time. Hildy plans to give up her life as a newspaper reporter, instead settling into a world of domesticality with her new fiancé Bruce Baldwin (Bellamy). Walter is not willing to let Hildy leave the newspaper, thus determined to get her to stay and to get her heart back he hatches a cunning plan to lure her back to the Morning Post. He plans to involve her in the paper's crusade to free convicted murderer Earl Williams (Qualen) from death row. While in a moment of madness, Williams shot a coloured policeman resulting in his conviction. Walter knows that Hildy has the perfect feminine touch to place Williams in a sympathetic light and hence get him a reprieve from the noose.
The plot sounds dark and gloomy for a comedy; however the screenplay is so well written and the plot is so skilfully buried in witty lines of dialogue and outstandingly funny situations. The screenwriters did a great job in producing a sparklingly remarkable script. The plot is also convoluted beyond all comprehension. This is only a marginal flaw of course.
His Girl Friday contains a number of outstanding performances from an extremely determined group of actors. Cary Grant is an amazing delight in the title role. These are the roles that he was born to play: hysterical, eccentric and wonderful. I do enjoy a Cary Grant thriller from the works of Alfred Hitchcock like North by Northwest; however Grant is equally enjoyable in these masterfully produced, timeless old comedies. Like his performance in such classic films as Arsenic and Old Lace, Grant excels in creating an over-the-top character that is given quality lines of dialogue. Grant is coupled with actress Rosalind Russell. The two share some great moments. The chemistry between Grant and Russell is simply priceless. The rest of the cast is equally remarkable.
Howard Hawks made his mark on a plethora of genres. He nailed the genres of film noir (The Big Sleep), western (Red River), musical (Gentlemen Prefer Blondes), gangster (Scarface) and of course comedy with His Girl Friday. Hawks is a skilled director very capable of producing quality work no matter what the genre is. Each scene here is hysterically funny and compelling no matter how outrageous the situation is.
His Girl Friday is slightly dated but on the whole it's an unforgettable screen gem. With Howard Hawks in top form and a handsome Cary Grant in his prime the film is loads of fun. The humour is still as funny as it was when first released back in 1940.
Howard Hawks? films are really quite amazing. They usually have fast paced dialogue and incredibly fun situations and characters. I would consider this his pinnacle achievement. Cary Grant and Rosalind Russell are astounding as they match it each with incredibly fast dialogue and constant overlapping of this where the key words are distinguishable easily. The setting is a newsroom as Russell is returning to her former husband, Cary Grant as the newspaper manager, to get the finishing touches put on her divorce with him and going offer to marry the dashing Ralph Bellamy. Of course, Grant still loves her and thus he uses his amazing newspaper know how in an attempt to win her back. It is great fun all around even at the near expense of being arrested.
la mayor burla al periodismo de la historia. los dialogos son mas rapidos q disparos de Tommy Gun! Es una de las mejores comedias q he visto (si no es la mejor). Creo q solo se le compara Dr. Strangelove...
Rosalind Russell is in my opinion the best comediene out there, not her best performance, but a good one nonetheless.
''Of course he had to have a gun to re-enact the crime with. And who do you think supplied it? Peter B. Hartwell. B For brains.''
A newspaper editor uses every trick in the book to keep his ace reporter ex-wife from remarrying.
Cary Grant: Walter Burns
Rosalind Russell: Hildegaard 'Hildy' Johnson
Ralph Bellamy: Bruce Baldwin
An old Classic with Cary Grant. His Girl Friday I saw in Childhood, the film is slightly annoying if you take it too seriously.
It has some killer lines and the plot is crazily addictive. Music is fitting to the times.
Not a fave old film of mine, I prefer Cary Grant in the Hitchcock movies and scorchers like Operation Petticoat.
Rosalind Russell and Cary Grant chemistry was good in this, pity they never worked together after this movie though. Typical reporter behavior carrying hidden tape recorders and microphones doing anything for a scoop.
It's a fun film but definitely dated...
Nonetheless it's a classic but not one of my faves.''Walter, you're wonderful, in a loathsome sort of way.''
cary grant and rosalind russell match each other's wit with zippy dialogue that can make your head spin in this clever screwball comedy. while i did have some qualms with the way it so nonchalantly dealt with the death penalty and murder i reminded myself that this is a comedy that, while at times is very socially critical (especially when showing how the news gets to print and how seedy and manipulative it is), in the end is meant to be taken lightly and never too seriously and surely meant to entertain, which it does.
Cary Grant, what more could you want. There is a remake with burt reynolds its funny but the original is better. The remake is switching channels
I Own and LOVE LOVE LOVE this movie! Cary is soo funny in this and the drop-dead BEAUTIFUL Rosalind Russell...classic performances by both greats!! If you haven't seen it...do so Immediately!
One of the greatest screwball comedies. Firecracker dialogue with actors about to explode. Cary Grant is a joy to behold. Howard Hawks' range extends to just about every genre.
In the original story, the competing reporters were both male. Making one female and casting Russell was a stroke of genius!
Good story, the characters are great, and Rosalind Russell was amazing in this, but there were moments when I just wanted to hurry the story along a little bit - I got a little bit bored at points. Worth a watch though.
Being a reporter I was quite interested in seeing this one. You could tell it was adapted from a play because there were only about 3 sets in the entire movie... and a lot of dramatic dialogue. Cary Grant fit the role really well.
His Girl Friday features one of the great screwball partnerships of all time as Cary Grant and Rosalind Russell bicker and swap wisecracks faster than a pair of Grouchos on amphetamines. Russell is a wonderfully independent female lead, giving as good as she gets from Grant's hilariously immoral and hustling newspaper editor. Beneath the fast paced laughs there is also plenty of black comedy and social satire to be had, poking fun at the media's attitude to what is "newsworthy", political corruption and a veiled commentary on the validity of the death penalty. Which all may go relatively unnoticed as you'll probably find yourself laughing too hard! Classic comedy.
HIS GIRL FRIDAY (1940)
directed by Howard Hawks
starring Rosalind Russell, Cary Grant, Ralph BellamyHis Girl Friday is known as a fast-paced comedy. Probably cause of the many punch-lines. But with today's technology and way of editing, its nothing special, its even slow sometimes. That might be cause its based on a play. Nevermind that though, that bit of trivia is totally useless. This is a classic comedy. It inspired a lot of jokes and premise for other movies ever since. Like the love triangle, which is exactly the same as the one in Twister, except in His Girl Friday there are two men and one woman. Yeah, I know, this is useless again and refering to Twister might make this film sound as a lesser one when its actually pretty good.
Legendary director Howard Hawks brought this story to screen. Basically, its about a former reporter who comes to her ex-husband-slash-former-boss, to announce him she is getting married. Learning that, being a bit jealous, he does all he can to keep her close, even if her husband is waiting in the lobby. He takes them to dinner and learn they are leaving on a plane in a few hours. He will set her up to get back to her reporter roots, tempting her to write an article that could save a man's life.
Based on a play, His Girl Friday is filled with dialogues and in space unity. There are plenty of good lines and the chemistry between the main actors is pretty good. There are some clever moments and a lot of laugh. Its also an interesting look at the era's journalism.
Cary Grant is mostly known for his roles in some of Alfred Hitchcock's most famous films but here he shows a lot ot comedic talent. He has great timing and deliver his lines perfectly and with a perfect tone as the former husband. Rosalind Russell is the lady stuck between her two loves, her future husband and her love for the reporting job. Ralph Bellamy plays the husband-to-be, he aint lucky cause he keep being framed by Cary Grant, he has a weird face and acts pretty well.
His Girl Friday is not the first film you may think of when you want to watch a dialogue-driven comedy, cause its actually very old and most people dont know the film, but its a very good one and if you can get a DVD with a good transfer, I suggest you give it a shot, you cant be diasppointed.
this movie is a remake of "the Front Page", and I think changing the one character to a girl was a brilliant choice. Unlike most movies, all three versions of this film are great. There is a fourth I have yet to see.
Very funny one-liners are what make this movie stand out. Some of the put-downs and witty retorts would work just as well and be considered just as cutting or smart in a modern-day film. Rosalind Russell is fantastic as the street-wise reporter, almost to the point of over-shadowing the great Cary Grant. Rather a black comedy as well for its day - as the plot revolves around political corruption and the imminent execution of a convicted murderer.
Fast paced and VERY funny! Great back-and-forth banter & bickering between "Walter" and "Hilde". One of my absolute favorites!
Cary Grant is the shit! Rosalind Russell was a hot little firecracker. I loved the character she played: steet wise but very much the lady....HOT!!!
