This short is a great little introductory prelude to The Darjeeling Limited, but it works okay on its own, too. The brief narrative concerns a man in a hotel room who gets a visit from his estranged ex.

It's pretty much a two character piece, but it's amazing how strong this is, and it's only 13 minutes. The art direction and cinematography are wonderful. Schwartzman and Portman put in some terrific work, and Portman briefly gets naked, so, if you like that sort of thing, here it is.
I think Anderson should make more shorts because this is really good, and, given that it is limited by time, he is forced to be more creative and tell a whole story in a short amount of time. He's in somewhat of a rut as of recently, although Fantastic Mr. Fox did pull him out of it a bit. I think this sort of thing could really revitalize his career.
Give this a watch. It's really something.

She: Are you running away from me?
He: I thought I already did.
A Paris hotel room. A broken heart. Two ex-lovers.

It's an interesting short, but I don't feel that it really had any purpose outside it being an introduction to Darjeeling Limited. Sure it has Natalie Portman, but that's all it amounts to.

Beautifully shot, Hotel Chevalier is a nice prologue to The Darjeeling Limited. Natalie Portman's Bottom makes a nice special guest appearance! ;o)

Designed as a semi-independent prelude to "The Darjeeling Limited", "Hotel Chevalier" proves that ten minutes of Wes Anderson's wizardry are worth more than many another big-budget director's feature-length film. It's a study in the pain and the lust only love can bring, as well as a variation of Anderson's trademark motif, control. Where "The Darjeeling Limited" bubbles over with substance abuse, poisonous snakes, restroom romps, brotherly affection and fatal accidents, "Hotel Chevalier" is a quiet and slightly eerie two-character mini drama set in a lavish Merchant-Ivory style suite. The suite's sole resident is a reclusive control-freak writer in a long-distance relationship (Jason Schwartzman). We watch as he half enjoys, half endures a surprise visit by his control-freak girlfriend (Natalie Portman). Is she a woman of flesh and blood, or is she just an imaginary incarnation of the jet-setting girl from "Where do you go to my lovely", the song Peter keeps playing on his portable stereo? There's no knowing what's real and what isn't in Anderson's paper moon world. But the importance of fact and fiction fades as she reclines on the bed and has Peter take off her spike-heeled boots. It's the most emotionally and sexually loaded scene I have seen in a long time, like a 20-second tango. It seems some of Natalie Portman's best work is done in shorts set in Paris. Remember Tom Tykwer's "True"?

Excellent beginning to a much larger and very funny and enlightening story.

Great short film by Anderson that I watch constantly because I am obsessed with Natalie Portman.

It helps explain a little bit more within The Darjeeling Limited but it's nothing to freak out over. If I had to seriously go out of my way to see it I'd probably be disappointed, but since they played it before Darjeeling Limited I'm not complaining too much.

A bizarre, rather empty short with beautiful set design and cinematography. Disappointing, but still looking forward to The Darjeeling Limited.

I'm pretty sure Portman gets naked in this short.

Since it isn't exactly a "film", I'm not going to even attempt to write a super long review on "Hotel Chevalier". Even so, I enjoyed this kicky, effective little short film. It came before a (far more wholesome) film "The Darjeeling Limited", and ironically this little short is based within "Darjeeling's" world. It is a funny short as well as a tender one. Jason Schwartzman is one of my favorite actors, and he shines here as well. Portman wasn't anything special, but she's good at playing the "bitch" type of character in nearly any story. None the less, this was a wholesomely awesome little short film that is worth watching before you watch "The Darjeeling Limited" on your ol' HD Televisions. Please excuse this horrific excuse for a review. Even that last sentence was a bit lacking. Oh, how humiliating. So the bottom line is: "Hotel Chevalier" is good stuff, and you should watch it.

A short that pre-faced The Darjeeling Limited and is of little consequence on its own, it's really only notable for the use of music and for Natalie Portman's nudity. Beautifully filmed though.
-
Natalie Portman and Jason Schwartzman are quite loveable.
-
A nice short that sets up The Darjeeling Limited.
-
I actually saw this at the beginning of Darjeeling Limited and thought it was part of the movie. It's really funny and interesting I find. I feel it works better at the top of Darjeeling though and not on it's own.
-
Quite interesting. Sounds like a promising story.
-
An interesting short, but it really must be seen only as a prelude to "Darjeeling Limited." However, it MUST be seen before you watch said feature-length film; you'll understand a lot more about what is going on if you do.
-
Nice little short by Anderson. Worth seeing even if just to see Portman's perfect little bum. yummy.
