Fantastic. One of the best for both Vincent Price and Roger Corman, House of Usher is atmospheric, creepy and classy. Certainly recommended.

This is a vastly underseen film, and in my opinion, this film is a Gothic horror classic, and I think this should be on a few more film/media/literature professors' syllabuses. This may be Corman's best work with Price.

Vintage hammy Vincent Price, but spooky enough to make you look behind you while you're watching.

Good Poe adaptation. It is seething with gloominess and degeneration. The movie is not really scary, but it's quite atmospheric and well acted. Thoughtful set design make the house a convincing menace of its own. Vincent Price is quite effective as the disturbed Mr. Usher. Gothic...( read more) and thick with dark mood. I liked the visit.

Pretty good take on Poe's short story by writer Richard Matheson and director Roger Corman, with his eerie and cheap atmosphere. Vincent Price, without his mustache, proves why he is the ultimate horror legend.

    eh, a typical horror film.

I've seen Vincent Price play the only human alive in The Last Man on Earth, a psychotic murderer in both House of Wax and The Abominable Dr.Phibes, a strange millionaire in House on Haunted Hill, and now an overprotective brother in this piece of gothic horror.

In Roger Corman...( read more)'s first Edgar Allan Poe adaption, Price plays Roderick Usher, a nobleman who has been driven mad by his family's past. He does not wish his sister to be married to Phillip Winthrop so he fakes her death only to have her driven insane in one of the most suspenseful and chilling conclusions to any horror movie of the time.

Unlike Corman's other work, this one does not come off as a cheesy B-movie. The sets are amazingly designed and the direction in this is quite different compared to a movie like A Bucket of Blood or The Wasp Woman. Corman does a great job with the gothic setting and look of the movie is very dark and miserable which just adds to the atmosphere.

The cast works well very together and it shows in the final prduct. The conflict between Price and Mark Damon's character is full of tension whereas Myrna Fahey is stuck in the middle of the two characters.

The final scenes in which Winthrop is chasing a psychotic Madeline Usher through the catacombs of the Usher house is amazing in the way it was done. As well as the scene in which Madeline viscously attacks her brother Roderick with camera zooms on her eyes which clearly show insanity.

I think overall, The Fall of The House of Usher is a very well made gothic horror movie and that it is a great movie for any Poe fan or Price fan. It is almost like a Hammer movie but without the classic monsters.

Classic, richly photographed, featuring one of Vincent Price's finest performances, well-crafted screenplay, a visual masterpiece of dread and doom, executed in grand style and satisfying conclusion.
