Anthony Edwards, Corey Parker, Lara Flynn Boyle

This diverting (if very unrealistic) comedy focuses on the exploits of charmingly naive Marlon Browne (Corey Parker), a well-meaning but scholastically average high school student intent upon attendin...( read more  read more... )g the same college as the girl of his dreams, his classmate Jessica Kailo (a young, perky Lara Flynn Boyle). To Marlon, Jessica seemingly has it all: looks, intelligence, and sophistication. His dilemma is that she is a far brighter student whose main choice, Ramsey College, seems hopelessly out of his reach, so the awkward but determined Marlon endeavors to get accepted there. But little does Marlon know that Jessica is also struggling with tremendous pressures of her own. Director Savage Steve Holland (Better Off Dead) exaggerates many sequences--including the college fair, college interview, and college acceptance scenes--to humorously portray the traumatic adolescent experience of applying to college. Taken as an '80s pop-culture time capsule, and disregarding its blatantly two-dimensional characterizations, How I Got Into College is fluffy fun; there is a genuine chemistry between Parker and Boyle. However, one has to wonder why the filmmakers are making the bizarre statement that it's ideal for Marlon to plan for this potential adolescent romance without any regard for his future. Among the film's notable cast appearances, Anthony Edwards (E.R.) plays Marlon's supportive and sympathetic liaison at Ramsey College, while Nora Dunn and Phil Hartman make goofy cameos as SAT/college-prep counselors who bilk students out of money by offering them transparent advice. --Bryan Reesman

A poor 80's comedy that moral tells us grades aren't important when trying to get into an ivy league school.

Aims low and hits its mark, fulfilling the "80s teen movie" requisites with just enough hyperbolic cleverness to steal a few pity laughs. The premise of going to college to get a girl is actually kind of okay, but instead of milking it, the filmmakers usually settle for pedestri...( read more)an gags. I will remember the opening test-taking sequence for its music and Parker's stressed performance.

I cant believe I watched this on cable a few weeks back. Young versions of Anthony Edwards and Lara Flynn Boyle. Had to sit thru it to remember how bad it was.

I remember watching this movie as a kid and really liking it and to my suprise, after watching it again I still like it. Some cheesy, unrealistic portrayals of teens but it has a young Lara Flynn Boyle and a loveable nerd as the main characters and it's still funny after all this...( read more) time which is great because it means it captures very well the experience of being in high school and trying to decide on/get into a college when it all seems so overwheliming at that age. Nothing spectacular but a good way to waste an hour or so.

I only watched this because it came packaged in with Reno 911! and I wish I had just left it in the plastic. All the crap about getting into college is too unrealistic and ridiculous to be remotely funny.

I only gave it as many stars as I did because Phil Hartman is in it.

Just for who stars in this, I'd give it a chance...
