But what's a Hawaiian Village without a troupe of Hula dancers? The only problem is that no one knows how to do the dance, or even knows what the Hula is! The skepticism and conservatism of the locals is gradually overcome as their daughters fall under the spell of one talented and determined dance instructor from the big city of Tokyo. The coal miners' daughters take a once-in-a-lifetime chance to escape their monotonous lives and become unwitting heroes to their depressed mining town as well as the whole of Japan.

I'm amazed that this film is already in the database. While I was watching it, I thought: "Gotta tell flixster to include this one." And here it is. Even if this weren't based on actual events, this movie would be worth watching if you enjoy dance, and especially if you like ...( read more)hula.

The hula revolution is in full swing these days. The last time I checked, there were more than 8,000 hula halau (dance troupes) located throughout Japan. That Japan loves Hawai`i and vice versa is abundantly apparent these days, but this movie is set in 1965-66, when launching your own halau was a bit of a mysterious and perhaps perilous adventure. Surely this group was a pioneering one, and that is a story worth telling.

An added bonus is that the film is scored by Hawai`i ukulele legend Jake Shimabukuro http://jakeshimabukuro.com/ . His soundtrack won the 2007 Japanese Academy Award for Best Sound Recording.

Shame on the cover art! It's actually a gritty drama, a Japanese stylin of Sister Act meets Full Monty and Billy Elliot. Totally universal, very good acting. A brilliant light comedy drama about a mining town doomed to close with one man determined to open a Hawaiian village there in order to generate money and save the town. A teacher from Tokyo arrives and starts training the recruits to become hula dancers who are all coal miners d...( read more)aughters. The residents oppose the girls becoming dancers.

This movie follows the trials and tribulations of the recruits from their shaky beginnings through some personal tragedies and to their final triumph at the opening of the Hawaiian Centre. It's guaranteed to give anybody who watches this movie a warm feel-good factor inside at the end. It's even based on a true-life story. I loved it.

A nice little feel good story, but with a very Japanese flair. The cultural differences between east and west might take some of the punch out of the delivered story. And even though it is edited fairly well, I never felt very emotionally connected to the characters and the strug...( read more)gle. It was just a bit too stereotypical and goofy. Overall though, a nice little story. And it just happens to be true.

The one thing I thought was odd was the whole Hawaii thing, yet they had a lot of Tahitian costumes and dance.
