Plot:
Bette Davis getting old, in this wierd horror flick, mesmerising and funny and sick. Loved it.
Bette Davis is older now. Creepy scary wierd movie, good good.
Once again Bette Davis in her prime, is a winner as a character that is decidedly not in her right mind. Bette has an uncanny knack for these rolls of a tortured soul. I do believe this movie was filmed at the famous Oak Alley in Louisiana. The perfect setting for memories of Southern debutants and formal planatation parties. The setting also lends itself well to the erie hauntings of this poor soul and her memories of her young lover who is murdered under the moss-hung oaks which line the swamps. Who says Black and white cannot be gory!
A horror classic that still holds up to this day, thanks to great performances. Havilland is great as the scheming cousin and Davis steals the show as the deranged Charlotte.
I love the role reversal of these two actresses. A shocker for sure, but I can still watch it over and over and over...
I saw this the first time -- or was at least exposed to it -- when I was 4. Parents went to the movies with me and my brother in tow, not realizing what kind of film it was. All I remembered for years was a head rolling down a staircase and a whole lot of screaming. This film could have been the reason I was so scared of horror movies until I was about 15. When I finally saw the whole film as a grown-up, I was surprised on how gruesome it actually is for 1964. Still pretty scary in places too. Good flick.
After getting past Olivia DeHavilland being evil (which took a LOT of work, mind you) I relished this movie. Psycho-mystery-drama...who killed the boy, is Charlotte really going barmy, who's involved in the gaslighting... AH! It's all such creepy, wacked out goodness.
And once again, Agnes Moorehead is severely overlooked. Does the fact that Orson Wells never did anything wtihout her on the Mercury Theater mean NOTHING to anyone?!?!?!
It goes a little over the top in the one scene where Bette Davis is delusional in the livng room and shoots Joseph Cotten, and the ending was a touch disappointing, but other than that, it was good.
Maravilhoso! Fantástica interpretação de BETTE DAVIS. Sem palavras, o olhar quer dizer muito, sempre!
this was a creepy movie. i watched it at bekka's cottage and it was every bit as good there as it could possibly be
A very thrilling 60's film with a simple plot line and great roles from a tormented Bette Davis and of course the always respectable Agnes Moorehead. A very unque one of a kind film. If you love the classic drama/mysteries then this is a film for you.
My second Aldrich film, i was as impressed with this one as i was with the first. Reversed roles set the standard for the rest of the film, absolutely amazing.
This falls under the same category as Whatever Happened To Baby Jane? I love it. The whole concept of everyone driving her to insanity by telling her she's crazy is amazing.
Southern Gothic grue. Agnes Moorhead, Bette Davis, Olivia De Havilland, and Bruce Dern... I watch this whenever I can because it's just sooooo over the top. It's GREAT. Get a laugh out of it, please.
Great thriller with an aging Bette Davie. The best scene is when Miriam slaps the whine out of Charlotte (Bette) along side a dirt road in the middle of the night.
Bette Davis is Bette Davis. Sheer Genius. Agnes Moorehead gives a performance worthy of an Oscar!!!
Not quite as good as Baby Jane but a damn fine attempt.. No doubt Joan Crawford would have been better than Olive De Havilland but thems the breaks
A twisted ride, worth every second as it holds the hearts and drives us to pitty the likes of Charlotte. till the twist end for the vile family
A bloody good watch for anyone into old melodramatic horror, this beautifully shot black and white treasure still delivers the shocks today. Bette Davis relives elements from '...Baby Jane' without being so nasty this time. Highly enjoyable and recommended.
excellent cast. Agnes Moorehead always a great character actress, as Velma the hillbilly housekeeper, Olivia De Havilland's performance as the 'bad guy' is priceless, and a great performance Bette Davis
As much as I hate to admit it Olivia De Havilland's performance outshines Bette Davis in 3/4 of this movie. The beautiful black and white cinematography is one of the stars of the film. Every room in the Hollis house is shrouded in shadows. Everything is black and white, and frequently people move in and out of the shadows so we're not allowed to determine their true moral characters by the way they are lit. Shadows are not just effects of the movie's light scheme, they ARE it's theme. I've wanted to see this movie for a long time and I wasn't at all disappointed. The acting is superb, the plot is intriguing and full of suspense from beginning to end.
Post-Baby Jane camp, but still well done. Olivia De Havilland is perfect as the scheming Miriam, and Agnes Moorehead made me ache with laughter as Velma the hillbilly housekeeper, but it's Bette's show once again! Pity about crappy Joseph Cotten's apalling timing and none-too subtle attempts at scene-stealing (which fail).
creepy and disturbing! its nastyness is very strange. but i laughed at the ugly fat man. because he was very ugly. he looked like frankenstein. yup he did
