Dina grows up wild and unmanageable, with her only friend being the stable boy, Tomas. She summons her mother's ghost and develops a strange fascination with death as well as a passion for living. Family friend Jacob encourages Dina's father to hire Lorch, a tutor who introduces her to the cello. When Dina is old enough, she marries Jacob and moves to Reinsnes, a port he runs with his mother, Karen, and his stepsons Niels and Anders . Niels doesn't like Dina's wild ways, or the fact that she has taken over accounting duties at Reinsnes. Dina's eccentric tendencies become even stronger, eventually leading Jacob into an accident of his own and bringing Tomas back into her life.

Little Dina accidentally causes her mother's death and her father then refuses to raise her. You learn about Dina's dramatic and turbulent upbringing. This is a touching story with a lot of drama.

I really liked it. Dina was a "psychologically complex" character and Maria Bonnevie played her brilliantly! It wasnt outright horror but the events in the movie and the way theyre portrayed do creep you out. I'm glad I saw it and I'd recommend it to friends.

Quel jeu époustouflant de Maria Bonnevie qui incarne cette Dina torturée et passionnée. Une femme qui ne vaut pas aimer par peur d'être abandonnée mais qui n'a pourtant peur de rien... Fabuleux combat intérieur.Grandiose!
Mon film préféré de la vie

Great story, great cinematography, great atmosphere. Simply a "must see" !!!

Either a story about an eccentric, but strong, independent woman with intimacy and trust issues, or a story about a psycho bitch, depending upon your point of view. A very good movie, either way...

This movie had potential, but fell through the cracks. To bad.

Simply a masterpiece! Very intense, in this cold beauty, magnificent scenery, and some incredible savageness. Depardieu is good in this role, but Maria Bonnevie takes all the place, and she's stunning in this role.

A very good looking small Norwegian drama about a woman's struggle. Bonnevie is very convincing and even the child playing young Dina is good.
