  This post-apocalyptic zombie-based film is strong thanks to in part the special effect/CGI work as well as the strong lead of Will Smith. I Am Legend is graphic in the realms of loneliness and isolation and makes a solid film for audiences to enjoy. 4/5

  Will Smith stars as a military researcher who is seemingly the last person left on Earth trying to find the cure for an engineered retro virus that has decimated the human population and turned many into mindless killing machines. It seems to me that the reason a lot of people slated this film was solely because it was not a faithful adaptation of the book it takes its name from. I personally haven't read it and to be honest I don't care if it's faithful or not. A carbon copy adaptation of a book does not necessarily make a good film and vice versa; the two are completely different media. The fact is that I found this pretty enjoyable. Will Smith is quite convincing as a man suffering the loneliness of total isolation and the scenes in the first hour of the film when the "enemy" is still unseen are very effective. It's therefore a pity that it descends into the usual CGI infested Hollywood claptrap for the final half hour. It reminded me of 28 Days Later because of the similar scenario and unfortunately it suffers from the same problem; the set up is great but it didn't seem to know where to go from there. Once the mother and son characters appeared it turned into a dodgy CGI-laden shoot em up and became far less interesting, but it's definitely worth a watch for the earlier scenes. Some of the plot elements are not properly explained and the ending is a little weak, but not bad as a whole.

  It was thrilling and captivating to watch the first time around. Afterwards the flaws became extremely apparent, yet were eclipsed at times by Will Smith's excellent acting and infusion of humor despite the film's dark themes.

  This film has all the ingredients of a good film, but it takes all the wrong turns along the way and ends up being a laughably bad and corny Sci-Fi story. First huge mistake from filmmakers of this film was to cast Will Smith in the lead-role. As an actor he has no depth or no charisma of anykind. Evertime i watch his acting, i am quietly nervous of the possibility that what if he begins (with no reason) to sing Wild Wild West. Second and possibly the biggest mistake was to use horrible CGI, when they decided to create the transformed humans. Those computer-generated creatures look so very unreal and well...fake. Third huge mistake was to hire director Francis Lawrence who is best known for his music videos and the abysmally bad Constantine. Lawrence has no skill for this kind of material and he turns this story into lifeless and artificial experience. I could go on with the list of things that are wrong in this film, but maybe i should just cut it short and say that the fourth huge mistake was actually to make this whole film.

  I absolutely hated this movie, i have now seen it three times in order to have an actual opinion on this movie as it was ment to be critically acclaimed and a very good movie, however i hate it, it is probably the single most boring movie i have watched in a long time. I didnt like the story and for me it felt long winded and it felt i had been watching it longer than an hour and a half! Its a real hard movie to sit and watch through to the end!

  How did I forget to review this movie? When the movie gets tense, man, does it get tense. Will Smith was incredibly captivating and his performance alone is so well done that it ALMOST overtakes the bad of this movie. I Am Legend has absolutely horrible character development, an incredibly bad ending, and horrible CGI. In the end, instead of thinking to yourself, "Oh my gosh, how is Will Smith gonna get out of this?" you think, "Damn... that's a lot of vampire dudes." That shows me that this movie has a weak narrative.

  Despite it's predictability and primarily questionable special effects there's a fair bit too enjoy about I am legend. When I learnt about the cheesy formulaic premise I was expecting something a lot stupider. Dont get me wrong , there is a lot of noticeable plot holes that were a bit annoying but it was forgivable because of many redeeeming qualities such as Will Smith's breathtaking performance. It's a thoughtfully made apocalypse/rapture flick that rises up against it's over used storyline and surprisingly goes to great depth with character development and provides a few decent shocks.

  The exquisite emotions and contortions on Will Smith's face made me love, laugh, cry and half-cover my eyes fearing for his life. The first half of this movie was like Cast Away, but sexy. Deliberately stretched, muscle-tensing suspense, badass zombie-charring action and gratuitous ab displaysâ"â"solid entertainment. What kept this movie from 5 stars was that all the profound emotions and societal motifs it primed me for were not consummated in the end. Hearing what the original story was gave me poetic, haunting chills. That's what this movie could have been. Hopped on and made myself comfortable in the "Alternate ending!!!!!!11" bandwagon.

  There are two problems with this flick mainly, one, the idea and look of of the film is now been done sooooo often, recently with '28 Days' and 'Weeks Later' in London and to be fair they are a much better grittier afair than this Hollywood cgi offering. The whole idea of civilization turning into zombies, vampires or being wiped out etc..has been done to death and I'm afraid this film is just too late. The other problem is the miscast of Will Smith, Smith is an OK actor, mainly a comedic or action based actor, and he just can't pull this off. Scenes involving sadness, grief or loneliness are just not fully realised by Smith because he cant get around his comedy background, he just doesn't fit the role in my opinion, a case of big name for big film I'm afraid. The film is actually OK, the effects of a desolate NY are great and haunting, its not very scary but it does bring a slight chill in certain silent moments. The night creatures are a bit plastic looking I'm afraid, a little bit too 'Golem' hehe. I didn't like the 'Resident Evil' style zombie dogs either, too silly and the score is a tad flat but overall its a good film just nothing special and not as good as '28 Days Later'. One thing puzzles me...how did lions and wild gazelle or whatever end up grazing and living in NY City? OK everybodies dead but how the hell does that happen?

  What do zombies eat when they run out of fresh victims? The answer, of course, is obvious. I only ask because zombies are perhaps the cinematic flavor of the day and their popularity gives one to muse as to why: could it be that - on some level - that is how we view each other, as mindless, soulless, eating, walking viruses? Smith is a likable enough leading man here as he attempts to save us from zombie apocalypse, to save us from ourselves.

  This movie is exceptionally good. As some of you already know, this movie is based off of the book, of the same name, it follows the source material surprisingly well...except for one part I'll get to later. The beginning of the movie was really good. Will Smith's acting talent really shows in this movie, all his emotions seem very genuine, and that fear/anger filled scream of his is burned into my mind, and that's a good thing. He plays a lone survivor named Robert Neville, who has survived what is later revealed (in flashback sequences) to be one major pandemic of a virus, he is the only one person in the city of New York(possibly the world) with a natural immunity to it. This however, is no flu. It mutates and changes its victims into hairless, sun-sensitive, super strong and fast creatures. Think "30 Days of Night" vampires only they can't talk. Anyway, the beginning also introduces you to the only other main character in the movie, Robert's dog, the only other uninfected being in the city. The creatures can't come out at night since sunlight kills them, so during the day, Robert is free to drive around the big empty city and socialize with some of the many mannequin residents he has set up around the city. It really creates a believable situation of how one man is able to keep his sanity after so long being separated from any sort of civilization. There are a lot of genuine scares in the movie as well. When Robert was sneaking around the dark, creature infested building trying to find his run-away dog, it was just so tense and terrifying, the cinematography really does it's job right in this scene to give you a view from his perspective. Just great. You really get attached to Robert and his canine friend, and you really hope that nothing bad happens to them throughout the movie. In addition to being the only survivor, Robert is also a scientist of some sort, desperately wasting the nights away in his tightly secured mansion, trying to create a cure for the virus from his own blood. Pretty much just a great movie...except for one part. The ending, it sucks...hard. If you read the book, you already know the original ending. Robert finds out that the creatures are actually intelligent, reasoning creatures and he's been going around murdering them, kidnapping them, and preforming insane medical experiments on the leader's daughter.(basically what drove them to attack his mansion) He saves the daughter and finally comes to see that he is the monster of their legends....yeah none of that happens. They hint that the creatures are intelligent throughout the movie; laying out complex traps, the same creature showing up in a leader position, but they just throw that all away at the end. I'm not going to spoil the movie ending, but it's kind of predictable and not nearly as deep as the other ending. What's stranger is that this ending is available as a special feature on the DVD, so they actually DID make it, but at the last second decided the other ending would be better. I guess when you add emotion and thought to mindless killing it just becomes waaaaay too smart and deep for the crowd to enjoy. Other than that aspect though, I would recommend checking this out, but do yourself a favor, play the alternate ending instead, much better.

  No point in saying that Will Smith is the pick of the cast, in what is basically a one-man cast. But unlike the experience of watching 'The Omega Man'(1971), the previous adaptation of the novel, Smith's subtle performance leaves the audience with a bitter idea of how creepy it would be to be the last man on Earth. Though the have-already-seen-in-a-zillion-movies look of the CGI zombies make them a little less scary and more familiar, the epic production designs of the abandoned city-scapes are really breath-taking and frightening at the same time.

  I finally watched this last night, and I was surprised by how much I liked it. A post-apocalyptic NYC was cool to see, and was well done. I found myself really emphasizing with "Robert" and his loneliness, and the movie was surprisingly moving. The only real low point in the film was the actual creatures themselves. I wasn't crazy about the CGI there, and I feel like they would have been much spookier if we saw less of them. In any case, the movie stuck with me after it was over, and isn't that what they're supposed to do, if they've done their job?

  I Am Legend is a very strong film for Will Smith. The emotional and suspenseful scenes highlight some of Smith's best acting to date. The plot is excellent and believable for a sci-fi film and the film has a nice transitions between calm suspense to intense action moments. The special effects are lacking a little bit and the ending feels less climatic than it should be, but despite these minor flaws this film is a definite watch even if it does not follow the book it originates from.
