I LOVED this movie. While the end was very predictable (even considering the alternate ending), it was a thriller all the way through. It wasn't a typical "zombie" movie, with an interesting plot, great action, and awesome effects.

Will Smith proves that he is more than a pretty face capitalizing on his fame and fortune. Offering a brilliant performance as the protagonist of the film, he provides a heart-wrenching look into the future of a world infected. The poor CGI can be forgiven; what cannot, however...( read more), is the lingering fact that the film would have been infinitely greater sticking to the original ending of the novel by Richard Matheson. But we cannot stop Hollywood from doing what it needs to do to lure in audiences.

Francis Lawrence's eerie, vaguely futuristic sci-fi/action thriller exists in a New York not terribly far-removed from present day, and as such it is kind of terrifying in its implications. Robert Neville (Will Smith) is a military scientist who, we are informed in the opening, b...( read more)elieved he'd found a "Miracle Cure" for Cancer. Unfortunately, the cure had side-effects which result in mutations, causing some to devolve into personality-devoid "vampires" of sorts. Now, New York City has been evacuated and Neville believes he may be the last man on Earth. He has barricaded himself in a house in Greenwich Village with his dog, his only companion. He makes daily patrols through the city, brief sojurns into a video store where he converses with the mannequins he's set up there as faux customers and cashiers, and gives annual radio updates in hopes that, perhaps, someone will hear him. In his basement laboratory, Neville continues to seek a cure - not for Cancer, but for the mutations he has caused. One night, Neville's spirit is broken, and he tries to kill himself by doing a kamakaze drive through an army of vampires to kill as many as possible before they finally kill him. Unexpectedly (and unclearly in method), he is rescued by a young woman named Anna (Alice Braga) and a boy called Ethan (Charlie Tahan). Just as Neville has lost hope for humanity and the future, he runs smack-dab into these two, who believe that a human colony of survivors exists in Vermont; they were traveling there when they saved Neville from his fate, apparently. The trio must now outwit, outrun and outlast the enemy long enough to find a potential cure for the mutations together. The film, directed by Francis Lawrence ("Constantine"), was based on the novel by Richard Matheson ("Stir of Echoes") written in 1954. It has previously been adapted as "The Last Man on Earth" (1964) with Vincent Price, and more famously as "The Omega Man" (1971) starring Charlton Heston. Here, Lawrence uses sound and very little music in the early scenes to create an eerie atmosphere; we believe that New York is evacuated and that Smith may be the only one left - it's very creepy. There are flashes to the evacuation and Smith's gutwrenching decision to part with his wife and daughter (Salli Richardson and his real-life daughter Willow Smith), and they provide some of the better special effects sequences in the film. Ultimately, this is a pseudo-scientific thriller with horror movie elements and it's a very well-made example of such.

Just saw this with half an eye again. Being up, doing nothing at 3.30 am will make you watch anything.
But seeing this again really puzzled me as to how I could give this two stars. I made some comments about acting and some other bullshit which probably had merit. But as I sat ...( read more)through my nightshift rewatching this, I got angrier and angrier. Twice have hollywood tried adapting Richard Matheson's sci-fi gem 'I Am Legend' and twice have they pissed all over him. How can they claim this is inspired by his book when they have turned it around and made it about the exact opposite of what the book tries to convey?

So this film is worth not even half a star. It's worth zero. Instead I will now recommend the book for you guys. If you haven't read it you should do it before reading this 'review' since I will reveal some things best left unknown before you read it to prove why this film stinks. Seriously. Read it.
The book starts after the world has succumbed to a disease that has turned every human into vampires. Everyone but Robert Neville who is immune. He spends his nights locked in his house that he has fortified and the vampires come to this house as he is, obviously, a rarity they'd like to feed upon. But at day he is the hunter. He scavenge for resources and food and hunts for vampires of course. He both wants to kill them but also study them as he hopes for a cure. He even has to study the vampires of legend as he knows theres a possibility that Dracula and his kin have really existed.
But as he does this he becomes the boogeyman of the nightmares. As the vampires evolve from the diseased bloodthirsty beasts into 'civilized' creatures that lives in cities and make laws to keep order, Neville becomes the monster that strikes at 'night' when they sleep. Killing them in their sleep, dragging them into the streets/sun so they die while the other vampires watch in fear from the shadows, kidnapping children or parents to experiment on them. In the end the vampires are the frightened mob, like the one that storm castle frankenstein in the films, attacking that which they fear or do not understand.
So in the end, when Neville stands trial and are sentenced, it even makes sense to him because he is the monster. He is Dracula. He is legend...
So, even though we know humans are 'humane', is he in his right to try and destroy a new civilization that rises when ours has fallen? Even if we know it to be evil? And that is what this film could have done so beautifully in it's time with Bush fucking around on his high horse forcing his good ideals and righteous ways down the throat of others.
And then they make this simpleton film with some cocked up 'I am legend because I save humanity'. Put aside that I'm not a big fan of humanity, this film could have been beautiful even to a philanthropist who I am sure could have appreciated the irony had it been made in Mathesons image.
So... if you've seen the film and hated it, I beg of you, read the book. It deserves the vindication!

So adorable and sweet. I cried buckets in this. There's a very tragic and sad climax in the plot and it's so sad. The action is actually pretty good. There are some interesting concepts in this that are totally awesome. This is a very interesting movie and I'd highly reccomend it to anyone.

  • October 25, 2009
Out of all of the actors in the world, only Will Smith could of played it that perfectly. It's not so much an action film, as I expected. But that's not really necessary because the story was played so well.

  • October 24, 2009
Visually impressive and Smith's haunting portrayal of a sad, lonely man is superb. The book is all about vampires and I couldn't understand why they drifted away from this? I also couldn't understand why super intelligent (but conveniently immune), didn't work out the the big bad...( read more) zombie just wanted his zombie bride back.....would have saved him a perfectly good hand grenade.

I'm quick to admire any film which can set up a believable atmosphere and maintain it -- involving you in the 'world' of the movie throughout the course of the film. I Am Legend maintains this post-apocalyptic, desolate and isolated atmosphere which is only broken up briefly in t...( read more)he narrative by the appearance of our vampire/zombie antagonists and other protagonists wonderfully. As you watch Will Smith's character go about his daily routine, his situation becomes almost palpable. The story itself is very entertaining and an excellent revisit to this oft-used concept, and, particular story.

It wasn't what I expected. But, it was good.
    Like, a lot.
I think that there should have been more explanation in the beginning of the film.
But, the whole concept of the story was good.
But the ending was so open. It kind of is like the ending from "The...( read more) Giver" by Lois Lowry.
It was just too short and didn't explain what was important.

I think that the ending just wrecked it. It could've been so much better. And I was also disappointed that it felt so short.
Other than than, Smith was good.

  • October 20, 2009
The story was better but I enjoyed the relationship between Smith and his dog, and the filmmaker's interpretation of the post-apocalyptic world.
  • October 20, 2009
Thank God the original ending was cut and re-written
