  Here's a film that I've been wanting to see for years. I had heard about how graphic it was, but I have to say I'm a little disappointed. Too much build-up I suppose, or maybe just high expectations. I Spit on Your Grave would make a good double feature along with Deliverance. There's rape and nudity abound in this movie, so if you can't handle things of that nature, I'd suggest passing this one up. This poor lady is raped and beaten seven ways from Sunday and then returns to exact revenge against her assailants (whom amazingly left her alive). My favorite bit is the guy getting a handjob in the bathroom and when he has an orgasm she cuts his penis off... and he doesn't even notice. That must have been one hell of an orgasm. I don't care who you are. If you're in the middle of coming and somebody cuts your manhood off, you're going to notice, and it's going to hurt. She then proceeds to lock him in the bathroom and wait for him to bleed to death. The best death by far, if not incredibly unrealistic. As you can tell, this isn't a terrific film by any means, but it's a bit of a curiosity that most people with a stomach for this sort of thing might want to seek out. The film was remade a couple of years and from what I understand, much of the nudity and violence was cut back. I wonder how much intensity it adds to the scenes. Hmm, maybe we'll see one day.

  This classic one is the most notorious pictures ever made during the seventies. I watched this on DVD while it allowed to release in my home country during banned for 17 years by the Australian Classification Board in 1987. It's true! This story is familiar to <i>The Last House on the Left</i> and proved by the likes of <i>Irreversible</i>, films tackling rape in a shocking and disgusting way are more readily accepted, and even gain a strong reaction from many critics. It's one of the exploitation films. There's a genuine film under all the gore and fact that our protagonist spends nearly 80% of the film completely naked. However writer Jennifer Hills' (Camille Keaton) emotions are as exposed as her body, her transformation from normality, to victim, through recovery and finally as executioner.

  Considering that I Spit On Your Grave has been banned, condemned and villified by almost every mainstream film critic, it was obvious that I would want to check it out. Critics have said this was a more intense version of The Last House On The Left. I somehow disagree. I thought both films were both equally disturbing. The Strength of the film lies in it's raw and graphic rape scene. The film doesn't shy away from being soft, and it plunges the viewer right in the middle of the savagery displayed on film. Would I go as far as to call this film smut? NO I wouldn't because I believe that considering everything that we've seen since the release of this film, they're are far worst things than this film. I wouldn't call this smut, but I would call it more of a prime example of unflinching exploitation cinema. I Spit On your Grave is not a Horror film in the traditional sense, but it is a horror film due to the fact that it showcases the darkest realms of human emotion. As far as Exploitation films are concerned, I Spit On Your Grave is one of the most depraved films that I have ever seen. But is it the most disturbing film ever? No, I personally thought that Cannibal Holocaust was the most extreme and disturbing film that I have ever seen due to the fact that they kill real animals on screen. But in I Spit On Your Grave, The rape scenes though extreme in nature are staged. As a whole, the film leaves a lot for improvement, and feels like a cheaper Last House On The Left. What makes the film watchable is the kills that victim Jennifer uses to carry out her revenge against those who savagely raped her. Definitely not a film for the faint of heart. I Spit On Your Grave is the prime example of the best that Exploitation Horror has to offer. A flawed film, but one that has gotten people talking for decades since it's release.

  I Spit on Your Grave is downright unwatchable for the second act, which in its entirety is a disturbing and extended rape scene where its only purpose is to show Camille Keaton naked. It's length seemed pointless in groundbreaking ways and seriously took away from the straightforward revenge plot. Then we get to the third act where Keaton gets her vengeance in what seems like a soft-core porn kind of way. Her killing of those who raped her is graphic, gory, creative and downright brilliant. The last act nearly makes up for sitting through a nearly 20-minute rape scene but this one isn't for everyone. I watched it over two nights and I think the break helped me get through it. Definitely not a date movie. And a second watch a few years later didn't do much to change my opinion either.

  I spit on your grave is nothing but a shameful and disgusting movie I saw the remake only a few days ago and gave it the same rating a 0%. Like I said it's shameful, disgusting, stupid nothing but your classic rape and revenge film that involves a women going to get back at the men that raped and slowly and painfully torture her. To me it's not worthy of being a cult classic. And yet it easily goes as one of the worst movies I have ever seen. The film follows Jennifer, a writer who is working on a new novel and needs to get out of the city to finish it. She rents a riverside cabin in upstate New York to work on her novel, attracting the attention of a number of rowdy male locals. They catch Jennifer one day and strip her naked for the village idiot (Matthew) and rape her. Jennifer is later attacked and raped a further two times by the four degenerates, and her novel is also destroyed. But Jennifer recovers, and in her now-twisted, psychotic state, she begins to seek revenge on the men. 0% for plot to me it was stupid and very predictable. 5% for acting its only good from our lead 0% for special effects like the remake I skipped throw the torture scenes and gruesome acts of violence only because I am not interested. 0% for characters just your classic she got raped and she is going to kill them. 0% for everything else.   I Spit on Your Grave is a film that will never be accepted as a serious piece of film-making. This is thanks in part to the gratuitous rape and murder scenes, which don't exactly hold back the shocks; and it's also due to the time in which it was made. These days, as proved by the likes of 'Irreversible', films tackling rape in a shocking and disgusting way are more readily accepted, and even gain a strong reaction from many critics. This film was unfortunately (albeit for good reason) caught up in the 'video nasty debate' in the early eighties, and as such it's reputation has been diminished to such an extent that the likes of Roger Ebert have labelled it 'the worst film ever made' (even though The Blair Witch Project is the worst film ever made) and it's reaction in general tends to be of the bad variety. For some reason, we have found ourselves in a world where it's more than acceptable to give praise to 'A class' rape themed dramas such as Irreversible, but woe betide thee who labels this as a good film. Well, woe betides me then. For a 'video nasty', I Spit on Your Grave has surprisingly good production values. While the acting often lets it down, the cinematography and even the script are more than decent and this helps the film in it's bid to get the praise it deserves. The story, which follows a New York writer who moves to a backwater part of the USA to work on her new novel, shortly before being horribly raped and beaten, is just a plot device for the more important elements of the plot. The main theme on display seems to be a comment on the male sexual ego and the way that women can have power over them. The film plays out like a revenge thriller, with the protagonist getting her own back on the men who raped her. This disrupts the main argument against this film; namely, that it's misogynistic, as much of the violence in the movie is actually directed against men. Of course, the rape scenes are the main crux of the film; but most of the gore comes later. Don't get me wrong, this is hardly an uplifting feminist drama; but it's not the worst film ever made either. Content caution though; it gets a bit extreme. Still hard to see the fuss really, I guess the rape scene is the main sticky point but the whole thing is kinda dull really and you never actually see anything bad apart from the odd splash of bushy pubic hair haha the shots of the guys grunting and going crazy as they have their 'fun' is prettystupid looking really. Its a cool little plot idea just to have a woman seek revenge on a bunch a guys but does lean towards just being an excuse for some icky murder scenes which I'm sure the new update will be much worse. Personally I liked where she hung the nerdy guy and he orgasms while she does it or so she says later on haha. Keaton has a cute face but not much else which was a disappointment hehe whilst the bad guys don't really seem all that bad, not as bad as the guys in 'Deliverance' which were really disturbing! these guys actually looked normal and came across as alright in an odd way, they just didn't put any kind of fear into me, should they have? Its a nasty plot but I don't see much nasty in the actual film, obviously its way outta date but its still basic and just boring to be honest, the film cover is much more nasty and evil looking than the actual content, something that happened allot with horror/exploitation films back in the 70's/80's.

  Without the completely overdone rape scenes, this movie would be absolutely nothing. It essentially has zero story, it just centers around a woman getting rape and getting a brief revenge. Nothing else happens really, it's overlong and just pointless in many respects. However, the rape scenes are so well done and graphic that it makes the movie necessary to watch. The ending is pretty fun too, seeing all that carnage in a river is sort of beautiful.

  Meir Zarchi's "Day Of The Woman" aka. "I Spit On Your Grave" of 1978 is a shocking and disturbing, highly controversial classic that is vastly underrated and unfairly condemned by many. Many people seem to hate this movie because it is unpleasant to watch. And it is, of course. More than that, it is hard to watch at times, and deeply shocking and disturbing. But how could a film about a brutal rape and bloody revenge not be? It is understandable that some people are disgusted by the gruesome scenes of rape and violence in this movie - these scenes are MEANT to disgust. But the fact that the movie may be too disturbing for many people doesn't mean it's awful.As far as I am concerned, this is a movie that shows despicable acts of violence as disturbing as they are, in a shocking and realistic manner. Warning SPOILERS ahead Jennifer Hills (Camille Keaton), young New York writer who mainly writes short stories for magazines, has rented a house by a lake in order to write her first novel in the quietude of the countryside. Shortly after her arrival, however, the beautiful, free-spirited young woman falls victim to a bunch of men who abduct and brutally rape her in some of the most disturbing scenes of sexual violence ever brought to screen. After a time of recovery, and only alive by lucky circumstances, Jennifer longs for only one thing: revenge. Bloody Revenge... Camille Keaton delivers an impressive performance as the rape victim who turns into a merciless avenger. The other performances are not too good, Eron Tabor is quite believable as the sadistic and despicable pervert he plays. "I Spit On Your Grave" has been accused of promoting violence, which it does not. It has even been accused of promoting rape - people who say that must be out of their minds. In no way does this movie glorify violence. The rape scenes are so disturbing that they're hard to watch at times and the rapes are shown as the despicable, vile thing they are. And even though Jennifer's revenge is utterly understandable, and anybody will of course sympathize with her, the acts of revenge are also very disturbing, and certainly not meant to show violence in a glorifying manner. This movie was in many ways inspired by Wes Craven's underrated and disturbing debut "Last House On The Left" of 1972, and both movies have often been criticized because they were misunderstood. I guess the main reason why this movie is accused of promoting violence must be that some people could misinterpret it. Many critics (including film famed critic Roger Ebert, who hated this film) have condemned this movie because it has been misinterpreted by some people. But is it the movie's fault that it might be misinterpreted (by morons)? If anyone finds anything 'erotic' or 'cool' about the rape scenes in this movie he should go see a psychiatrist. These scenes are not meant to be cool, they're meant to be shocking and disturbing, and that's what they are. They are utterly disturbing, saddening and gruesome and it is beyond me why anyone would see anything glorifying about them. All said, this movie is certainly not pleasant to watch, but it is definitely memorable and original, and accusing this film of promoting rape makes about as much sense as accusing "Bowling For Columbine" of being pro-NRA propaganda, or accusing "Full Metal Jacket" of promoting War. I can understand that some people do not like this film, and those who are sensitive when it comes to violence in films probably shouldn't watch it, but it certainly is an amazing film in its own way. "I Spit On Your Grave" may have its flaws, but over all it is an original, shocking and memorable film that deserves to be respected. The mere fact that some people can't handle the violence doesn't make the movie bad. Recommended to everybody who can cope with films that don't pull any punches.

  Being one of the most famous of the Grindhouse exploitation films of the 1970's, I Spit On Your Grave is one of the most graphic films you'll ever see. A woman from New York City comes to the country for a summer of peace and writing but ends up practically destroyed by four testosterone fueled maniacs. She survives the attacks and seeks her revenge on the men that left her violated and near death. I Spit On Your Grave is a pure exploitation flick for the sake of exploitation. Opinions vary on whether this film is a statement of woman fighting back against male oppression or garbage. I have to vote for garbage. The cat and mouse 20 minute rape scene is nauseating to watch-and that's why people watch it. It's the old car wreck analogy. You don't want to watch, but you do. And of course this gets asses in the seats. Most of my complaints about the violation scenes would be a little tamer if the second half of the film didn't seem like something tacked on to turn a pseudo snuff film into a feature. The victim doesn't burn to the end of the film in a blaze of glory but seems to dim as we get closer to the ending. Obviously this film was made for that 20 minute cat and mouse chase. So why does I Spit On Your Grave still fascinate after all these years. It's the sick human mind. If you want an example check out either Roger Ebert or Gene Siskel's reviews of the film (mainly for their takes on the audiences they viewed it with). I Spit is pure '70's exploitation garbage of the lowest sort: a softcore porno that many view to have a heart but doesn't even have a brain (unless you count the one in its pants).

  Not horrific or shocking enough to warrant its notoriety. In fact this film should certainly not be taken as a horror. The build up is painfully slow, yet doesn't build any real sense of danger. The most interesting aspect of one of the rapists being a good family man is never explored, so it is simply a woman gets raped, then a woman kills the men. She never seems in any real moral or ethical dilemma resulting in a lackluster film. The effects are also not up to scratch though the performances do become more believable as the film progresses.

  "I Spit on Your Grave"? What, another spaghetti western? This 1977 cult classic is a fine example of a great title that has nothing to do with its attached story. "Lake Rape" would be a more appropriate handle for this dingy, low-budget exploitation film that's more shocking today for its untamed pubic hair than its violence. What's most attractive about "Grave" is the clean, undistracted symmetry of its structure -- a woman is sequentially raped by four men (three brutes, one imbecile), and then takes sequential revenge on her attackers. Rape, rape, rape, rape. Kill, kill, kill, kill. The geometry is perfect. No other characters have time to make much impression, and they're not missed. But viewers who require craftsmanship or competent acting should paddle elsewhere.

  Controversial films are a difficult part of cinema to look pass since some of these movies actually define cinema like The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (the 1974 version define the horror genre), Cannibal Holocaust (the first film to use the now overuse "found footage"), and even even Citizen Kane which is often consider the greatest movie ever made is too a controversial movie. If there's anything controversy around a film does is create hype for it and the movie I'm reviewing today was the topic of being a very graphic film. After my viewing I understand why the rape the scenes are controversial, but everything else is exaggerated. I Spit On Your Grave is about a writer who is brutalized during her cabin retreat seeks revenge on her attackers, who left her for dead. That's pretty much all that's happens in this boring horror film that nearly last two hours. There's barely any character development for our protagonist and for some reasons the writers decided to give the rapist more development than our main character. Every single character in this movie is basically cardboard with no defining characteristics or any effort to flesh them out. For a movie that has a woman getting rape I did not feel sorry for her, the only thing I knew about her before this was that she was a writer and lived in New York and that's all you'll to know about her throughout this long, drawn out, boring film. If this character was better fleshed than I would have cared that she got rape which is a terrible crime don't get me wrong, but these rapes scenes feels so tasteless here leaving you no impact at all. Her character is suppose to be pro-women, but what kind of a rape victim would have sex with one her rapist for as part of a plan in her trap. This character is suppose be a role model for strong women, but she's not because she isn't fleshed out and has sex with one of her rapist which is not how strong women would do this. As for our villains they makes us guys look like sex crazed lunatics. Now there are probably people like this in the world, but in the context of this movie it sending the message that all males are evil and soulless. These rapists are also very, very, very stupid. Why would these people talk about their crime in a public restaurant and also why would one of these rapist go into their victim house with the victim in fine condition after what they did to her. The cinematography is terrible, the director often times holds on a shot for too long or establish a shot as if someone is spying on a our main character with no purpose. The violence here is not graphic and the controversy surrounding it graphic violent nature is exaggerated. I'm suppose believe this film was the subject of controversy when films like The Texas Chainsaw came out earlier which are far more disturbing than this tame horror film. I do want to address the TAMATOMETER rating for this movie which is ridiculously high for a movie that has one dimensional characters, long drawn scenes that'll make you yawn, and bad acting from it cast. Just some of these critics quotes like "Still an effective and shocking bit of revenge cinema..." makes me question the authenticity of their opinions on this. Calling this "effective and shocking" is hugely false, the woman who gets rapes is one dimensional and her rapists were more fleshed out. THESE ARE NOT TRAITS FOR AN EFFECTIVE OR SHOCKING REVENGE FLICK. Making the victim of rape a cardboard character is not effective in any way for the audience to feel sorry for her. Or another critics that said "one exploitation horror movie that lives up to its classic title." NO IT DOES NOT! The rapes scenes are the only scenes that live up to it reputations, the actual "graphic violence" of these rapists getting killed are a huge letdown beyond words. One of the few critics that wrote an accurate review for this film is Rodger Ebert. In which he says "This is a film without a shred of artistic distinction. It lacks even simple craftsmanship. There is no possible motive for exhibiting it, other than the totally cynical hope that it might make money". While I might not agree with Ebert all the time in his views, he's one of the few critics that's telling you the truth about this bad film. As for the critics that gave this a positive review I hope your readers can forgive you for making one bad judgement on this film. I Spite On Your Grave doesn't live up to it controversial status and if you're to take out the rape scenes in this movie it would be just a boring tame revenge flick. If it wasn't for the controversy raising wrongfully expectations I would have given it an zero. Its a controversial movie that's better left unseen for a huge disappointment. Note: To quote Zardoz, I think a better tagline for this movie would have been "The gun is good, and the penis is evil".

  I can see why Roger Ebert calls this movie the worst film of all time. It also made TIME magazine's "Top Ten" list of Ridiculously Violent Movies. The one star that I will donate to this film is for the courage of Camille Keaton to take on a character who experiences the brutality and violence of being raped over and over again. She had no help from the script or any of the other "actors" who were in this movie. I guess that's why none of the other four guys ever did anything again. This movie is just a novelty probably because of the full female nudity in a feature length film for 1978. It was almost as uncomfortable to watch as the rape scene from the re-make of "The Last House on the Left". I'm sure you can find somewhere online to watch this for free. For some reason, it has the same taboo cult status as "Cannibal Holocaust." Also there are a lot of contradictions on Camille's relationship to Buster Keaton and her year of Birth. Some sources say granddaughter, some say grandniece. Some have her DOB as 1947, some have 1950.
