Kim Cattrall, Michelle Trachtenberg, Trevor Blumas
Like The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement, Ice Princess is a fairy tale for girls who dream about what they can be. Casey Carlyle (Michelle Trachtenberg of Buffy the Vampire Slaye...( read more
)) is a physics geek who discovers a mathematical formula for those tricky figure-skating jumps that her fellow high schoolers are performing. It's all part of her plan to nab a juicy college scholarship, but a funny thing happens on the way to Harvard: Casey decides that in the name of research she should try the jumps herself, and she discovers that not only does she have talent, she likes figure skating. Will she throw away her Ivy League dreams in favor of those frilly dresses? Ice Princess isn't a movie that will change the world, and it treads lightly on the downsides of the sport (it costs a lot of money, rivalries are bitter, careers are short, and long hours mean less time to party!); there's also more than one unfortunate reference to how skating makes Casey look "hot." But just as Casey says: "What's wrong with wanting to feel strong and graceful and beautiful?", what's wrong with a movie that lets people explore their options and make decisions for themselves? The on-ice action is believable, and Trachtenberg is especially appealing in the lead role. With Kim Cattrall as the snarling coach, Joan Cusack as Casey's anxious mom, Trevor Blumas as the light romantic interest, Hayden Panettiere as the rival, and champion skaters Michelle Kwan and Brian Boitano as themselves.--David Horiuchi

I can't quite call this a chick flick more a teenie movie actually.
When I was about 12 years old I read all the stories I could find about ice skating and that is the age group that this film is aimed at.
The falling-in-love-for-the-first-time aspect doesn't really come to p...( read more) -

If you're wondering which way the movie is going, note that it isn't called Quadratic Equation Princess. full review
Poor, suffering child; if something doesn't change, and fast, she might wind up studying physics at Harvard. full review
The movie works. I started by clicking off the obligatory scenes, and then somehow the film started to get to me, and I was surprised how entertained I was. full review
Parents and kids should be heartened to see a G-rated movie that is not dumbed-down or saccharine-sweet. full review
Even for an ugly-duckling-makes-good fairy tale, Ice Princess seems to stretch believability a tad too far. full review

June 8, 2008Excellent family movie. And as a curious fact, the movie is a kinda of crossover with 3 sci-fi franchises: Michelle Tratchenberg (Buffy, the Vampire Slayer), Hayden Panettiere (Heroes) and Kim Catrall (Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country)

June 18, 2007I don't think the people who made it knew anything about iceskating. because she just started skating she would need to take like 10 skating tests before she could compete at junior level
