A strange movie. This character Carlos played by Antonio Banderas has some kind of visions in his mind, but visions so clearly that he seems to be able to tell people who is dead and who is alive. A bit like The Shining almost.
But one negative fact is that ...( read more)Banderas and the other Hispanic characters should have spoken Spanish to each other. It would make the movie more believable.

The movie is set during the Dirty War in 1970s Buenos Aires, Argentina, where the military government is abducting those opposed to its rule. Cecilia, a dissident journalist, is kidnapped by the secret police to join the ranks of the 'disappeared'. Cecilia had earlier published a...( read more) provocative article in her outrage over the disappearance of students protesting bus fares.

As her husband Carlos, a theatre director, begins to search frantically for her, he realizes that he has acquired psychic power that enables him to predict the future. This not only puts him in high demand by those who have also lost a loved one, it helps Carlos to foresee what happens to his wife and other detainees.

At one point, Carlos visits the Naval Mechanics School, the notorious torture centre.

The movie has graphic images of suffering such as the rape and torture scenes of Cecilia and her daughter Teresa.

The closing caption mentions that around 30,000 Argentines disappeared between 1976 and 1983.

It has been long ago that I saw stuff like this. It was hard for me to watch, because it's awful to see violation, women who are being raped, and all the other abuse during the junta. I just can't believe there were such sick people on earth who were able to abuse people in that ...( read more)way.. It's terrible to see this movie, but the film itself is good. And the acting is by the way amazing! Especially Antonio Banderas, but Emma Thompson and Leticia Dolera were also very good.

It's great there are people who want to remember the victims of the junta. Because we can't forget what happened during it. We just can't!

At times this movie had me pinned. I couldn't turn back to the mad-magazine. But that's easy. Just take a timeless subject matter. Throw in some torture and raping of children, and you have anyones attention...
But that psychic business. What the hell?!? At one point, Antonio al...( read more)most threw a fortune cookie at the general!

It's a shame about thsi film... Taking something serious and almost making it seem comical by giving Banderas' character psychic ability. Not to mention bad dialogue at times.

But still, if you can get past all that, it's worth seeing to learn from history. Plus, Thompson i...( read more)s great.

I wish Christopher Hampton had been more sentsetive to the subject matter

A very powerful movie! This movie takes us through emotions of many families who had family members dissapear or taken away by the government. The acting by both Antonio Banderas and Emma Thompson are amazing. They both get into their roles very well and they make sure that you s...( read more)ee their suffering and pain. The story of the dissapearings in Argentina should be known by everyone because it is a powerful story of a very tragic moment in the history of Argentina.
