Writer-director Martin McDonagh's darkly comedic crime comedy/travelogue/character study stars Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson in top form as a couple of Irish hitmen on loan to London's crimelord (Ralph Fiennes in a funny and terrifying turn) and waiting for an outcome in the aftermath of a small tragedy on one of their jobs. They await their outcome in a tourist Medeival village in Belgium and find themselves falling for the local population and the lovely scenery.
Clever plot, great visual panache, brilliant dialogue and glorious performances combine to make this odd little movie stand out as a highlight of 2008.
That the film also deals in morality and issues of fate (and faith) only serves to make it one of the very best films of the year!
A pleasent experience filled with dark humor and some wicked jokes. First I was dissapointed as the movie lacked action then I found that the jokes are amazing and most of them are new (especialy the ones from the dwarf dude). Also, the performances by the three main charachters were surprisengly good as I can`t stand Ralph Fiennes and I hate Colin Farrell since ALEXANDER shit but they did well here. Anyway that film is alot better than most of the blockbusters in the year so donot miss it.
among too many releases of blockbusters something so small can be easily overlooked, just like the city of Bruges itself, whose beauty and charm start to emerge once you allow yourself to settle in and let the story wash over you.
Ken: Your girlfriend's very pretty. Jimmy: She's ain't my girlfriend. She's a prostitute I just picked up.
British dark comedy at it's very finest. Totally amusing and fun filled flick which came off as a real surprise. It does get brutal at times but manages to keep you totally indulged in the story with some prety great conversations which had me laughing the whole fuckin' time. I really really enjoyed this.
Two thumbs up for the writers and the cast for a job very well done!
Wickedly Twisted... Proof Collin Farrel can act at gunpoint. Very well written and directed debut feature from Director Martin McDonagh. If you can't handle ANY violence, leave it, but the subtext is so rich, even the biggest pansy can sit through the 3rd act. I was surprised at the quality of this film and watched it several times before it had to go back into the box.
A very good mix of dark humor & drama. Was pleasantly surprised how much I enjoyed this movie. The "f" word is used alot which might be offensive to some viewers. Aii in all well acted movie.
I have a new appreciation for Colin Farrell after seeing this, he really shows his range here. Some gimmicky direction that exploited the main character for a cheap laugh or two tainted what could have been one of the best movies of the decade. Instead, we get just a solidly recommendable hit.
This is a common case of bad advertising, but I didn't watch it expecting anything after watching the duet of drivel I had watched before this flick. What makes me kinda like this film was the unexpected emotion between Farrell and Gleeson. Feinnes is like Kingsley in Sexy Beast, meaning he was damn good. The film is shot reasonably well and this was a pleasant surprise. I've got my problems, but it's worth a rental. Nothing more.
A smart film that slowly built up, showing a side of Colin Farrell that I had never seen before. Entertaining, perhaps quite bizarre at times but totally exquisite.
It gives the audience a chance of getting to know well the characters and understand them.
I loved this movie. It had great acting from everyone who was in it. A good script, It was funny, smart and had nice action. The ending was very smart and kinda left you wondering. Overall i recomend you going and seeing this.
i can see why people would like it in regards to the satire side of its funny. but it wasnt my kinds of LOL movie and its all seemed a bit to fluffy for people dying and being cool.
Colin Farrell finally puts on his acting shoes again after SO long! Himself and Brendan Gleeson make a good pairing. For the last 20 minutes Ralph Fiennes steals the show with his british bad guy role.
a terrifically disappointing movie. a low-suspense thriller laced with over-the-top dark humour relying almost solely on stereotypes, bigotry, and shock value. the characters were either too criminal or too underdeveloped to care anything about, and the dialogue was saturated with profanity without much potency or actual substance. when the film ended, I found myself thinking both "that's it?" and "so what?" an overall waste of talent and not worth the critical praise.
An interesting film that starts out rather slow and picks up pace towards the end. There are good punches of humor that sometimes seem wrong. Despite that it is rather dark overall and the ending is a nice touch that might turn some people off. Ferrell was better in this than I expected. Overall entertaining.
In Bruges is a film about two hitmen who are hiding out in Bruges, until there boss calls them. The story is slow at first and the climax of the film feels incomplete. Overall it was a mildly amusing afternoon watch.
Two words describe this movie: Sleeper Hit. Going into this film, my expectations were below average, but when all was said and done, I was quite pleasantly surprised. In this full-length debut from director Martin McDonagh, Colin Ferrell and Brendan Gleeson play hitman who have settled in Bruges awaiting their next assignment from boss Harry Waters (played by Ralph Fiennes). The film is filled nicely with black, yet simple humour that has you enjoying each scene. In my mind, Colin Ferrell sports his best role yet as the emotionally unhooked Ray, while Brendan Gleeson does an equally excellent job as the firm but peaceful Ken, while Ralph Fiennes is the perfect asshole hit boss, Harry Waters. Some unique cinematography is also displayed, but that is the purpose as admiring the architecture and landscape is a fondness of Gleeson's character. While a little short of action, this film is a very neat little story that in my mind will be up for a Oscar nomination, perhaps in the Screenwriting category.
Loved it. Although slowly built up this film is original and also quite emotional. Never been a fan of Colin Farrell but he is amazing in this. Brendan Gleeson is a god... honestly can't think of any film that he crap in. Top cast, top film!
A dark comedy/crime thriller/character study that is so much more than a genre picture, and amazingly avoids cliche. It's also the best film of the year.
(on the third time through, I liked it even more than the DARK KNIGHT).
i was expectingthis to be really good but it wasnt, i saw it advertised in the pictures and they make it look really good but its slow and not that funny.
