A sexually charged murder mystery that was controversial in the US, perhaps for its unromantic graphic sex scenes. As a murder mystery it is very average indeed and the experimental cinematography was kind of distracting at times.

I strongly suspect this is a film that will benefit from repeat viewing - with it's strange insinuating cock-tease of a plot and morally ambiguous characters, you're left feeling we've only scratched the surface of what is going on here.
A kinky and morally twisted tale that I r...( read more)eally took to. Meg Ryan is surprisingly watchable (who'd have thought Little Miss Bland could be so intriguing??) and so is Mark Ruffalo - killer or not, who wouldn't want filthy sex with him?? Ahem...

Exotic, not....dark, sleazy, yes....fails to "make the cut".

Really impressed with this one, hadn't heard of it before and not the type of film I would've expected Meg Ryan to have been in, but she did a very good job, as did Mark Ruffalo. The film itself is quite slow moving, but I think that was the beauty of it as it made it more reali...( read more)stic. Avery enjoyable serial killer movie

Okay, admittedly I was rather tired when I watched this, so I shouldn't be unfair. But I want to believe that a good movie would have kept me awake. A few rather hot sex scenes are not enough to create an outstanding movie. People will always prefer Meg Ryan in the role of the ni...( read more)ce and innocent girl, she better accepts that. The rest was camera work that tried to look really special, a confusing and boring script and unbelievable characters. Unless you desperately wanna see Meg naked, better skip this wannabe thriller.

1 star for Mark being naked.
  • October 6, 2009
Disappointing crime drame. Embarassing performance for Ryan.
  • August 22, 2009
just can't believe it was meg ryan on the lead role...so daring!
  • August 14, 2009
I read the book, and once I saw the film I was pissed. I know you would get more out of the book from seeing the film, BUT to me this was nothing to do with the book at all. It just only skinned along the storyline thats all.

this was a weird one, very dark and sexual. it was hard to take in meg ryan in this film, it was a totally different role for her! yet it was a interesting thriller that kept you watching.

Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times

All of this is well done, and yet the movie is kind of a shambles. The key supporting characters are awkwardly used, as if the movie thinks it ought to have them but doesn't know why. full review
