good movie...watched this when i was younger...not boring, special effects was good considering that it's a 1990 movie...well played by the characters, good plot
Pretty good alien movie. lt would be a hell of alot better if Will Smith didn't constantly make wise cracks, even while he was inside an ALIEN SPACESHIP. Oh, and he was also serious about marrying a stripper... Get real son.
I was tempted to give this movie half a star more because Jeff Goldblum plays in it, but then I thought that everyone made some bad choices in their life and let it be. What a crap of a movie.
It was a cool movie when I was like... 12...13? Don't remember when I first watched it to be honest. But now it's just emberrasing, especially that "weird" character who should save the day. -_-
I thought this movie was just amazing. I don't know how I could have made it any better. It was funny, action packed, romantic, patriotic, and had violence with aliens. Geesh.. brilliant.
Roland Emmerich's sily summer blockbuster is about an alien invasion of Earth where special effects heavy ships blast cities to atoms, and Will Smith is a butt kicking pilot, and Bill Pullman, Jeff Goldblum and Brent Spiner appear. Basically an excuse to pretend to blow a lot of stuff to bits. Ends with a ridiculous fighter chase, ray gun blocking hero, and the worst use of a computer virus ever committed to film. Maybe the aliens were using Mac and they installed Windows, or vise, versa.
"Independence Day" shows proof that life does exist elsewhere in the universe (and thus we're not alone at all) and that Earth is a vulnerable target for the invading aliens. Oh wait....this movie is not based on actual events.
In an ordinary summer day of July 2, strange atmospheric phenomena, which turn out to be UFOs, spread all over Earth. And within minutes, BOOM....city targets such as Los Angeles, New York City, and Washington DC were destroyed. The lives of every person in the globe are forever changed. It's time that heroes such as Capt. Steven Hiller and David Levinson must battle against the alien invaders so that the world would return to peace. The Fourth of July (July 4) is not just an American holiday anymore; it was also the day all of Earth fought back. Great special effects (SFX) are plenty throughout the movie, especially with the city devastation scenes and how the fighter pilots attack the alien spacecraft.
Directed by Roland Emmerich, "Independence Day" features great acting performances from the following cast:
1.) Will Smith (Capt. Steven Hiller)
2.) Jeff Goldblum (David Levinson)
3.) Bill Pullman (President Thomas J. Whitmore)
4.) Mary McDonnell (Marilyn Whitmore)
5.) Judd Hirsch (Julius Levinson)
6.) Robert Loggia (General)
7.) Randy Quaid (Russell Casse)
With all of the great acting and the great SFX, "Independence Day" is a great alien invasion movie that all audiences, including the sci-fi fans, should enjoy.
Captain Steven Hiller: Welcome to earth [punches alien in the face] Now that's what I call a close encounter.
A whole lot of fun. Effects that hold up well today, that contagious Will Smith charm. Just a fun popcorn movie.
It may be difficult to explain why ID4 is a better movie than Armageddon or War of the Worlds, but the simple answer is that it is just more fun to watch.
Unlike Armageddon, this movie is able to effectively balance the campy B-movie quality of the movies premise and the epic scale.
Capt. Jimmy Wilder: You scared, man? Captain Steven Hiller: No. You? Capt. Jimmy Wilder: No. Hold me. Captain Steven Hiller: Hey, pay attention! Lt. Colonel Watson: Something you want to add to this briefing, Captain Hiller? Captain Steven Hiller: No Sir, just a little anxious to get up there and whoop E.T.'s ass, that's all!
Ginormous alien space crafts come to earth to destroy us in a very Hollywood movie way and its up to the combined talents of Will Smith, Bill Pullman, Jeff Goldblum, Judd Hirsch, and Randy Quaid to stop them.
Gen. Gray: Mr. President, I'd sure like to know what you're doing. President Thomas Whitmore: I'm a combat pilot, Will. I belong in the air.
They succeed of course. This is thanks to Will Smith one-liners, Jeff Goldblum one-liners, Judd Hirsch one-liners, Randy Quaid kicking ass the alcoholic way and a surprisingly effective Bill Pullman as President of the United States making a speech towards the end of the film that is always a good listen.
Video Newscaster: [TV news anchor reporting] Once again, the L.A.P.D. is asking Los Angelenos not to fire their guns at the visitor spacecraft. You may inadvertently trigger an interstellar war.
The effects are still good and this movie has fun with what goes on, despite the horrific destruction that goes on. This was always one of my favorite movie going experiences when I first saw it in theaters and for good reason, it's really entertaining.
Captain Steven Hiller: THAT'S RIGHT! Thats what you get! Look at you, ship all banged up! WHOSE THE MAN? HUH? WHOSE THE MAN? Wait until I get another plane! I am going to lower your friends RIGHT BESIDE YOU!
Well this film was on tele one night so I watched it I didnt watch it from the beggining but I got into the movie very easy I just thought the movie was great and Will Smith did great in it.
having not read a review, or write up or even looked at the DVD on the shelf i was expecting a film about the American War of Independance. Naturally i was a bit bemused at the start of the film last night when it appeared on Film4 when the stars and stripes was proudly on the moon. From that point the film did not inspire me, how many more disaster movies about bloody asteriods hitting the earth have to be made before the message gets across - IT'S BORING!!. Switched off after half and hour..
This movie could have been so much better. Too many cheesy and contrived moments made it hard to enjoy. Everyone was attracted to this movie based on its premise -- Aliens from outer space are attacking Earth... A well trodden path to be sure, but a fresh take is always entertaining. Unfortunately this movie didn't take the idea very seriously.
Love this film. Will Smith films are always guaranteed to be great! I've always watched this film in part before, but finally was allowed to stay up to watch all of it on TV.
This movie has given me more joy in my life than any other movie. Yes, perhaps it wasn't a great film, but seeing it when I was 5 years old in theatres (which I still remember), it was the movie that made me love movies.
