Gripping anti-war offering from director Luis Mandoki. Innocent Voices shows us the civil war in El Salvador through the eyes of a child. Mandoki presents a harsh but accurate indictment of the war and of the U.S. involvement in it.

    ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC!

Based on a true story, on the life of Oscar Orlando Torres, who wrote the screenplay and co-produced, Innocent Voices is one of the most moving and powerful films I've ever seen.

It portrays the harsh childhood of the eleven year old Chava (the sensational debuter Carlos Padilla) in the early 1980's in El Salvador, a country emerged on a long and senseless civil war. Chava lives with his mother (the stunning and talented Leonor Varela) and his sister and two little brothers. They live in a poor, remote village in one of its many cardboard houses. Everyday is a struggle for survival.

Now, this isn't just another war film. Nor a simple biopic. It's an amazing tale of survival and courage. A story of a child whose biggest struggle was to remain a child, to fight for his innocence (like so many around the world). And also a story of a mother, who'd do anything for her son. This is a film of an extreme importance. The fact that it had the UN support says it all. A film that deals with 'sensitive' subjects, subjects that most people prefer to ignore. Because wether we want to face it or not, people die everyday in stupid, easily avoided wars around the world. Twelve year old kids are recruited to the army, when their only concern at that time should be a math test or falling in love.

The most impressive thing is to think that everything we see in the film (or at least 90%) actually happened. This isn't just another film remotely 'based on a true story'. It was written by someone who actually experienced all of it. Unlike Oliver Stone's Salvador, that looked at the El Salvador conflict through the typically American point of view and whose plot and characters were obviously made up based on facts read on newspapers and magazines, Innocent Voices is about real people, real life situations and tragedies, real human emotions.

This is a mexican production from Altavista Films (the same company that gave us Amores Perros). Technically the film is close to perfection, from the stunning cinematography to the editing and the magnificent score, this is a world class film, can't put it more simply. Another huge triumph of Mexican Cinema!

    Can't, just can't be missed!

Useless piece of crap!! I hate when mexican filmmakers try everything to match gringos' stupidity when making moral and politically-correct flicks about war and children... I hate it!! Jorge Ángel Toriello's role was stolen by Carlos Padilla (the "lead role") for some unexplicabl...( read more)e reason. Toriello is one of the greatest young actors in Mexico nowadays and deserved a better role than "the sidekick"... he steals the show anyways from crappy child actor Padilla. José María Yazpik also shines as "the uncle" and there are some nice moments but it's crap all around... great casting, thou... wasted but great

The story of a 11-year-old boy and his family who lived in El Salvador during the civil war. When you see this film, you see war from a human sight rather than political. The normal life, childhood innocence and the cruelty of war is what makes this film so real.

This film shoul...( read more)d be viewed by all people around the world and it is like campaign against any kind of war. All wars can only bring disaster and suffering to people, even to the innocence, such as children. I believe there is always a way out for every problem.
I highly recommend it because of the message the film brought in and for how amazingly well made it is. See this film.

This kind of Mexican attempts to copy the sentimentalism of Hollywood war films may originate mixed feelings. The film is effectively impactful I must say, and borrowing the brutal style of Elem Klimov was a partially dumb move. However, this film had the realism that few action-...( read more)oriented movies do and some moments are just unforgettable. See it as a combination of Idi i Smotri (1985) and Lakposhtha Parvaz Mikonand (2004). Such mix will obviously have flaws, but Carlos Padilla is exceptional and the final result does not disappoint, except for some inadequate references to popular Mexican culture.

Powerful and emotional film. Based on a true story set in El Salvador during civil war. The story is told through the eyes of a young boy. Fantastic character development and terrific acting from Padilla . As a filmmaker, Mandoki understands daily struggle and tragedy very well,...( read more) he was able to utilize them effectively throughout the movie. This is as raw and as close as you can get to reality for some countries, in this case El Salvador.

Not as emotionally moving as it should be. A good topic and visually appealing.

This was part of El Salvador's history and some say it didn't even happen. It shows you the civil war from a child's perspective.
