i've never seen deep throat but from the clips shown here it doesn't look like a masterpiece. however this is an enlightening documentary on the first porn film to go mainstream and be prosecuted for obscenity, ultimately becoming the most profitable film of all time. the early...( read more) 70s was a more innocent time for so-called 'blue movies' and the director, gerard damiano, reminded me of burt reynolds' character in boogie nights, with his ambitions of merging hardcore with hollywood. things took a turn with the invention of the vcr and, almost 40 years on, the internet may kill the adult film industry altogether. it becomes ever more extreme and misogynistic in search of an audience. interesting sidelights include the mob's investment in the film and the feminist crusade that turned its' star against it. the first amendment issue is still relevant as the laws under which it was prosecuted are in place in america and the religious right is never far away

A really great documentary about one of the most famous porn movies in history. Not so much about the movie itself so much as world it came from and ultimately brought with it. Very well done with some classy Dennis Hopper narration. Lots of great interviews and archival footage...( read more) too. (Namely the Miami theater manager and his cranky old wife pissing and moaning in the background.) Inside Deep Throat is also a great look into a nearly forgotten time which at times seems so inconceivably ignorant which gave way (as the ending points out) to another twisted time in history--now.

Good documentary in that you learn alot, especially since I wasnt around at the time to see the stir this movie caused, but overall nothing really that great.

For a documentary about the movie that kicked off the modern porn trade there's not enough porn and too many annoying Americans!

yea this really isnt one of those "its so influential that we should make a documentary" type of thing. I mean no matter how popular it was... sorry, its just a girl sucking alot of dick. i mean thats as "deep" as it gets.

I suppose I need to see "Deep Throat" before I critique the content of this film... But from the clips I did see it looked like it's not my cup of tea. But this film is an interesting analytical exercise in the colliding forces that created "Deep Throat," and the resulting cultur...( read more)al/societal/sexual/political ramifications. The film offered as many viewpoints as it could, but ultimately championed "Deep Throat" as a film about "the freedom to speak out against shame and hypocrisy." I think I could only agree with this as far as the right of the public to view such films, and the right of people to be involved in careers of a sexual nature. But the content of the film...which is about a woman who has a clitoris in her throat? Not exactly politically radical stuff. I am uncomfortable with the way Linda Boreman was demonized for flip-flopping as far as her views with her involvement in the film/ porn. I can see her inability to give herself sexual agency destroyed other people, but in a culture where women's sexuality and has been commodified and altered to acquiesce to male desire, I cannot help but feel some compassion for her fickleness.

A great documentary about the film and the effect it had on the cast and crew after it becomes a cultural touchstone. It's hard to believe that porn was so main stream that major celebrities were seeing this and that the films were playing in more upscale theaters.
