Inside Deep Throat Reviews and Ratings

i've never seen deep throat but from the clips shown here it doesn't look like a masterpiece. however this is an enlightening documentary on the first porn film to go mainstream and be prosecuted for obscenity, ultimately becoming the most profitable film of all time. the early...( read more) 70s was a more innocent time for so-called 'blue movies' and the director, gerard damiano, reminded me of burt reynolds' character in boogie nights, with his ambitions of merging hardcore with hollywood. things took a turn with the invention of the vcr and, almost 40 years on, the internet may kill the adult film industry altogether. it becomes ever more extreme and misogynistic in search of an audience. interesting sidelights include the mob's investment in the film and the feminist crusade that turned its' star against it. the first amendment issue is still relevant as the laws under which it was prosecuted are in place in america and the religious right is never far away

    Excellent documentary.

I suppose I need to see "Deep Throat" before I critique the content of this film... But from the clips I did see it looked like it's not my cup of tea. But this film is an interesting analytical exercise in the colliding forces that created "Deep Throat," and the resulting cultur...( read more)al/societal/sexual/political ramifications. The film offered as many viewpoints as it could, but ultimately championed "Deep Throat" as a film about "the freedom to speak out against shame and hypocrisy." I think I could only agree with this as far as the right of the public to view such films, and the right of people to be involved in careers of a sexual nature. But the content of the film...which is about a woman who has a clitoris in her throat? Not exactly politically radical stuff. I am uncomfortable with the way Linda Boreman was demonized for flip-flopping as far as her views with her involvement in the film/ porn. I can see her inability to give herself sexual agency destroyed other people, but in a culture where women's sexuality and has been commodified and altered to acquiesce to male desire, I cannot help but feel some compassion for her fickleness.

A great documentary about the film and the effect it had on the cast and crew after it becomes a cultural touchstone. It's hard to believe that porn was so main stream that major celebrities were seeing this and that the films were playing in more upscale theaters.

Pues que decir que el porno es toda una industria ahahah y que ahora me entraron ganas de ver la peli lol, intenta abordar el tema desde muchos ángulos pero profundiza muy poco en ellos.

Wooow! This is really a documentary that made me jump of anger! When you tell artists - bad artists or good artists - that they can not experiment in certain avenues you are taking away the basic freedoms of every American! actor Harry Reems said in an interview dur...( read more)ing the Deep Throat trial. Really well-said. His co-star, the late Linda Lovelace was a bit of a turncoat when she realized she went free she hastily turned and backed the feminists against porn group and wrote a book about her experiences. Harry Reems was told: If the Republicans are going to be re-elected you're going to jail, if the Democrats are elected you're going to be set free. (Another of many reasons why NO ONE EVER should support the fucking hypocritical Republicans!) Thanks to the Jimmy Carter voters actor Harry Reems was set free.
But be not mistaken fellow Flixster users, even Flixster is very good at censoring on this very website. Two examples: I uploaded a movie still of a bare naked Alan Rickman taking a dip into the ocean from the flick Dark Harbor which was immediately being removed by the Flixster moderators. Also I had to censor my Dogma skin by putting a black square on the Metatron's non-existent genitals. (Feel free to take a look at that skin in my created skins and laugh out loudly!).
No really, Americans are as prudish today as they were in the 70ies when Deep Throat was in theatres and caused a stir.
This documentary also shows the progression towards today's porn industry. And I must agree with the Deep Throat film makers: at least Deep Throat seemed created for the sake of art rather than today's porn, made because of money and nothing else.

A very interesting documentary. This was an eye opener for me,i really had no idea all this went on in the early 70s.The documentary wisely chooses not to concentrate too deeply on Linda Lovelace's clams of being forced into making the movie, but on the cultural impact of the film...( read more) and how it changed the sex industry. Bringing XXX away from the dirty-raincoat brigade and into the lives of mainstream audiences. It focuses on the American government attempt to ban pornography completely. All this attention only made people want watch it,and they did, making " Deep Throat " the most profitable movie in motion picture history. How Ironic can you get.

A great look back from 72 onward on what started to porn industry, the social & political uproar and those involved. It's amazing how much a blow job created so much trouble.

"They invented a new word, filmmaker. Suddenly there were independent filmmakers." - Gerarld Daminano

I'm going to be honest, the 'documentary' genre is my least favorite movie genre. To me, most documentaries are like watching grass grow, they are long, tiring and most of all...( read more) boring. There are a few exceptions, like 'Super Size Me', 'Murderball', 'Capturing the Friedmans' and 'The Fog of War', that actually turn out to be wildly entertaining and interesting, but for the most part I'm quick to pass on them. Last night, after hearing such rave reviews about it, I finally go the chance to see the new documentary 'Inside Deep Throat' following the controversy and government ban that came with the release of "dirty picture". I have to say, 'Inside Deep Throat' was very intriguing and had me entertained the entire short 90-minute runtime. I guess I'll have to add 'Inside Deep Throat' to the short list of the documentaries I see and actually like.

The documentary tells the story of it's release in time square and how after it was banned there, the film kept showing up other places. 'Deep Throat' was the most profitable film ever made, grossing more then $600 Million. That was an obscene amount of money for 1972, but it showed that the people were starting to become interested and more daring when relating to sexuality. The documentary span starts at the opening and concludes with where everyone involved is now. The documentary features interviews from Harry Reams, the director Gerard Daminano, Bill Maher, Wes Craven, Francis Ford Coppola, Dick Cavett, Hugh Hefner, Larry Flynt, Alan Dershowitz, the menacing Charles Keating, Gore Vidal, Linda Williams, John Water, and so much more including archive interview footage from the star of 'Deep Throat', Linda Lovelace.

If you are interested in seeing an engrossing and live wire documentary don't hesitate to rent 'Inside Deep Throat'. For those who are more prudish about the subject I'd recommend you don't even bother. Grade: B+

    Good insight into the film

A really great documentary about one of the most famous porn movies in history. Not so much about the movie itself so much as world it came from and ultimately brought with it. Very well done with some classy Dennis Hopper narration. Lots of great interviews and archival footage...( read more) too. (Namely the Miami theater manager and his cranky old wife pissing and moaning in the background.) Inside Deep Throat is also a great look into a nearly forgotten time which at times seems so inconceivably ignorant which gave way (as the ending points out) to another twisted time in history--now.

well done doc about the film and it's impact creating the genre-as-industry, the legal ramifications, the stars and the underworld that exploited it all.

9-10-07 --A documentary on the biggest selling and most controversial porn ever made. Don't expect to get a lot of "action". This is a documentary.
