Plot: Strictly for kids, this 1999 live-action feature version of the popular cartoon series seems long even at 80 minutes. As a video, it's easier to take and appreciate for what works best in the s...( read more read more... )tory: the special effects. Matthew Broderick plays the security guard who is physically transformed into a multi-use cyborg with a zillion attachments, from stilts to helicopter blades to skis. A crimefighter in raincoat and fedora, and equipped with a nifty Gadgetmobile, the hero investigates the death of a man linked to the villainous Sanford Scolex (Rupert Everett). Scolex, who blames Gadget for having to wear a prosthetic hand, develops an evil robot twin of the good inspector, causing much mischief and giving Broderick an opportunity to poke fun at his own performance of the virtuous Inspector. The action is shaky, the script plods along, and the effects soon take over; Everett has to go to the extremes of hamminess just to be seen above it. But children of a certain age will almost certainly engage with the more clever stuff and forgive the rest. --Tom Keogh

Irritating sound effects and a basic storyline will keep youngsters occupied, but grown Inspector Gadget fans might find it a big step away. Matthew Broderick and Rupert Everett do a good job but nothing memorable.

Strangely, it's direct-to-video sequel pays more of a tribute to the original cartoon, as this one does not.

Very Cute. I really liked how well they adapted the cartoon to this and the imaginitive gadgets they came up with. I think I liked it better than my kids. Although I hated the cartoon... hmmmm

The plot sucks, but... whatever. ^^ I love superheroes no matter what they're made of, as long as they don't pee their pants. ^^

Buena pelicula para ver un sabado por Canal 5. No vale la pena irla a ver al cine o rentarla.
La caricatura original es mucho, pero MUCHO mejor.

Terrible, terrible movie based on a sort of crappy cartoon. Penny and Brain were so awesome and Inspector Gadget was an idiot. I know that's the whole premise of the show but it still irritates me. Rupert Everett and Matthew Broderick's talents were totally wasted.

they shoudn't have given Dr.Claw a face!!! we never saw him in the cartoon. just his hand on his cat. They should have kept it that way. AND Brain should have been animated. AND I wanted to see Penny and that awesome book/computer she always used. This movie could have been done way way better. But it was still entertaining.

Matthew Broderick should have never left his Day Off. The second one was much better because the actor made sense.

The film is further blessed with suitably heroic protagonists, fine flamboyant villains, and a director who perfectly understands the nature of this project. This one, to borrow one of its own phrases, is a wowser: lots of fun and wonderfully inventive.

I dont know why this Movie is so under rated. I enjoyed it AND its Funny. I think no one could have played the Character of Inspector Gadget better then Mathew Broderick. I use to watch those Cartoon Series.

Wowzers! What a joyless, fussy contraption of a movie! "Inspector Gadget" is entirely devoid of story, wit, style and character development. The plot is a PlaySchool version of "Robocop" combined with "The Six Million Dollar Man", and it's not even a good rendition. All I got was a go go Gadget migraine.
