Into the Wild is a pretty damn good movie that was nothing I was expecting. Its like Jack Kerouac, Henry David Thoreau and J.D. Salinger all wrote a screenplay together. Sean Penn proves he's nearly as good a director as he is an actor and lines up an impressive and talented cast...( read more). Jena Malone's narration started grating on me but the Danish couple more than made up for it. Into the Wild meanders just as much as you'd expect a movie about a kid abandoning his worldly possessions to wander the country to. The photography is fantastic and for as much as this type of story normally sends me into yawning fits, it wasn't bad. Decent soundtrack, too...

I really like Sean Penn as a director, so I was hugely disappointed when I saw this. The scenery is beautiful and Penn's composition is great but the film is riddled with slow-mo/speedup/overexposure cuts and more cliques than you can shake a stick at! Standing on top of a mounta...( read more)in with your arms out in a spinning shot, eating an apple then looking directly at the camera, ugh, I can?t go on otherwise I'll get angry. That's what the film made me feel, angry! Christopher Candless is an unlikeable character, so maybe Emile Hirsch was a good choice to play him as he is an unlikeable actor but that's the problem with the story (or at least the film), I couldn't give a toss about this little brat! There are plenty of films where I've not liked the main character but I have liked the film, this is a huge oversight by Penn. The supporting cast are also on bad form, the acting is at best lazy, apart from a truly great performance from Hal Holbrook who was overlooked at the Oscars. It?s been a while since I?ve seen a film so far up its own bottom that I've got so wound up! Half a star for the scenery and 1 star for Holbrook who is the only thing worth watching this for. Two and a half hours of quite a boring biopic of a selfish, self centred, immature and quite irritating person

Very good movie. I didn't even notice that it was 2 1/2 hours long. The ending was sad, as I didn't know the real story before watching this.

A beautiful film. Can't believe Sean Penn directed this. Its just beautiful! The ending was unexpected for me and kinda pissed me off. Only reason why it gets 4 instead of 5

A film that has completely blown me away on many levels.

A true story of a journey of self-discovery and search for identity, living a simplistic lifestyle, travelling a Nomadic adventure. A film of rebellion and anti-conformity.

This film is beautifully made in every sens...( read more)e of the word. The views of nature were captured in great detail, the acting was of high standard and very natural, the relationships between people and their relationships with the material world were completely in depth.

Excellent work here by Emile Hirsch who jusifyably portrayed this true life character's journey and of course Kudos to Sean Penn for the Screen play and Direction in this film and for choosing a project with such human insight.

Although a short role, it has to be said that the older guy in this film (whose name I can't seem to get at the moment) played a blinding role and a totally believable performance.

Inspirational, breathtaking, liberating and one hell of a life experience. The best film I have watched for a long time and this has instantly become one of my favourite films of all time. I shall now be buying the book..

    UPDATE:

Second viewing already plus reading the book. I have fallen in love with the philosophy behind the story and have found a deep fascination and admiration into the character Alexander Supertramp.

Please do not read the following review unless you know what happens in the end...

Into the Wild--A wild and introspective ride. Right around the part where he's jumping the rails and then gets pummeled be the railroad attendant, that's when I got the feeling he was going to die...( read more) at the end. I dont know why. Then when he gets rained in and almost slips in the rushing flood waters, I was like 'oh this is it, I knew he was gonna die, but then he didnt, and instead of sluffing off the movie as predictable, when he unexpectedly climbed up, I felt relieved. He went through a struggle near the end and you really started to feel for the character. He did not give up, and his death resulted in a fierce attempt to keep surviving, not the other way around. He was delirious and couldnt properly deciefer his surrounding plants, near the end. There was nothing he could do after the poisoning, and you could see the torture he was going through in his desperate attemps to rid the poison His suffering was not just from the symptoms but the knowingness that he was dying. As an audience, you want him to find an antidote, or be rescued. but in a real setting, the chances are slim. It was real, and raw, and definitely hit a nerve at the climax. I think that was the point. Therefore it raised the bar. His decent into the wild, somewhat unprepared, did not help with the character attatchement element, let alone sluffing off a would be life, as a Harvard Law graduate which was predetermined and to him a, dime a dozen, but his quest for personal freedom takes a backseat when he has his first close call with death. With the up and down emotional levels this movie sparks, you start to feel what he is feeling, as oppose to just feeling for the character. We all die, and the point is that this one died with a smile on his face, which indicates, he had no regrets in his final moments, and that if he could go back, he'd do the same thing, with more preparation and wisdom on his belt. Besides it was a true story. A depiction of real life. If he did get rescued, the movie itself would be less memorable, truth be told.

I love this movie. I'm obsessed with Alaska and running away from it all, and this did not change my mind.

It's a heartbreaking tale.. how someone who lived life to the fullest ended up alone in his final days.

Finally seen it... Instantly got in my top 10 best movies of all time.

Original entry from late 2008: Haven't seen it yet (DVD is already on my shelf though), but anything below a 10 out of 10 and one of my new favorite films of all time would be a disappointment. (Will update a...( read more)s soon as seen)

Not a bad movie but considering that it's based on a true story, it's hard to believe how stupid people can be.

I hated the first 2 hours of this because Chris/Alex is so spoiled and stupid. If you're too good for money, you're too good to hitch a ride. (Someone's paying for it.) But the ending was good. He seems to learn a lot then. Still, Fight Club was a better story about complacency.

They cheated this film out of the Oscars. It is by far, one of the most heart wrenching films that has ever existed. Just put your whole heart into it, and it will give much in return.
