Easily one of the best movies of 2007, the film seems like an American classic, the story too good to fabricate. A young man's search for happiness, enlightenment and self-actualization takes him across some of the most beautiful country in the world, and he finds what he is look...( read more)ing for only at the end of his journey, too late. Fantastic performances and cinematography bring the amazing true story to life in a way that only film can. Sean Penn's intimate direction, informed by an obviously personal relationship with the story, puts the audience through a visceral, human experience. I've never read the book, but adaptations don't get much better than this.

Into the Wild is a pretty damn good movie that was nothing I was expecting. Its like Jack Kerouac, Henry David Thoreau and J.D. Salinger all wrote a screenplay together. Sean Penn proves he's nearly as good a director as he is an actor and lines up an impressive and talented cast...( read more). Jena Malone's narration started grating on me but the Danish couple more than made up for it. Into the Wild meanders just as much as you'd expect a movie about a kid abandoning his worldly possessions to wander the country to. The photography is fantastic and for as much as this type of story normally sends me into yawning fits, it wasn't bad. Decent soundtrack, too...

I really like Sean Penn as a director, so I was hugely disappointed when I saw this. The scenery is beautiful and Penn's composition is great but the film is riddled with slow-mo/speedup/overexposure cuts and more cliques than you can shake a stick at! Standing on top of a mounta...( read more)in with your arms out in a spinning shot, eating an apple then looking directly at the camera, ugh, I can?t go on otherwise I'll get angry. That's what the film made me feel, angry! Christopher Candless is an unlikeable character, so maybe Emile Hirsch was a good choice to play him as he is an unlikeable actor but that's the problem with the story (or at least the film), I couldn't give a toss about this little brat! There are plenty of films where I've not liked the main character but I have liked the film, this is a huge oversight by Penn. The supporting cast are also on bad form, the acting is at best lazy, apart from a truly great performance from Hal Holbrook who was overlooked at the Oscars. It?s been a while since I?ve seen a film so far up its own bottom that I've got so wound up! Half a star for the scenery and 1 star for Holbrook who is the only thing worth watching this for. Two and a half hours of quite a boring biopic of a selfish, self centred, immature and quite irritating person

Very good movie. I didn't even notice that it was 2 1/2 hours long. The ending was sad, as I didn't know the real story before watching this.

A beautiful film. Can't believe Sean Penn directed this. Its just beautiful! The ending was unexpected for me and kinda pissed me off. Only reason why it gets 4 instead of 5

Into the Wild is by far the most depressing film I have ever seen, as well as being the most inspiring, eye-opening and fascinating, though most of that fades away at the end. I have never seen a film based on true events that left me with such a strong taste of wanting more.. mo...( read more)re answers.. more truth.. nor has a film ever evoked such strong emotions in me. Penn has done a phenomenal job with capturing this truly magnificent story. I also thought the idea of having his sister do a voice-over to illustrate the flaws of the heroic character was brilliant. Everything about this movie is great: great acting by great actors, great directing by a great filmmaker, an amazingly haunting soundtrack by a great artist.. I just wish the ending could have been different.. that McCandless could have been proven right and his journey would have touched more people's lives. Then again, that would have been a lie.

After knowing it's a true story, it's way better than just the movie.

Edit; I recommend the movie over the book.
    Great story..
