"Stay a child while you can be a child"
A Baker and his Wife have been cursed with a childless marriage by the spiteful Witch next door, who promises only to lift the curse if they journey into the woods to collect four items for her: Jack's white cow, Little Red Riding Ho...( read more)od's cape, Rapunzel's yellow hair and Cinderella's golden slipper... This is an excellent filmed performance of Stephen Sondheim's brilliant musical fairy tale. Because events take a very dark turn in the Second Act, I wouldn't recommend this for small children, unless you're one of those parents who enjoys fielding questions about death, mutilation, adultery and human sacrifice; it's better suited to adults who refuse to grow up. Some of the songs are gorgeous, especially Stay with Me, sung by Bernadette Peters' Witch to her adopted daughter Rapunzel, and No One Is Alone, sung by Cinderella and the Baker to a recently bereaved Little Red Riding Hood and Jack. The most amusing number, and the one that most readily gets stuck in my head, is Agony, in which two Princes Charming argue over whose insurmountable quest for love is the most difficult to bear. I loved every minute of this!

A filmed Broadway stage musical. Was a blockbuster in the 1980s and this film captures that magic for history. Avoid if you do not like theatre.

This is perhaps one of the funniest musicals ever! When I first saw it, I about laughed my head off with the great humor shown. It also has great music. Very very addicting. I loved every moment of it. Funny, sad, happy, it has it all.

It was this movie that first introduced me to the wonderful world of Sondheim. Into the Woods remains my favorite Sondheim show, primarily because its plot is simultaneously charming and tragic. The original cast does a fantastic job reprising their roles in this video. Bernadett...( read more)e Peters, in particular, is awesome as the Witch. This is one of the best movie musicals I've ever seen - everyone go check it out!

definitely interesting and hilarious. Act 1 seems like someone just said lets take Rapunzel, Little red riding hood, Cinderella, jack and the bean stock, a desperate witch, and a couple desperate for a child and mush them together. Second act lets take these happily ever afters a...( read more)nd show how they're not, and add pissed off giant, snow white and sleeping beauty just for good measure.
Overall a hodgepodge of stories culminating in one amazing musical.

What a great film! I performed as Little Red Riding Hood in the Lake City Playhouse production and although ours was done quite well, it's hard to beat the original broadway cast!
