Vince Papale (Mark Wahlberg) was a 30-year-old substitute teacher and part-time bartender who had never even played college football. When Coach Vermeil (Greg Kinnear) made the unprecedented announcement that he would be holding open tryouts for the Philadelphia Eagles, Papale would go against incredible odds to live the dream and experience every fan's biggest fantasy. With a position on the Eagles secured and a new life path forged out of little more than determination and persistence, Papale takes to the field to experience the life-altering rush of running yards as a stadium full of cheering fans burst from their seats to support the hometown hero who proved it's never too late to take control of your own destiny. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

Critic Reviews
-
Michael Phillips, Chicago Tribune
There's a sugar coating to the way Papale's story unfolds, but not so much that you'll spoil your dinner.
-
Bill Muller, Arizona Republic
Even Papale's most famous play, recovering a fumble to set up a touchdown, is embellished, as if Disney can't bear to stick with the facts.
-
Joanne Kaufman, Wall Street Journal
When it's good it's very good. When it's bad -- well, it's still pretty good.
-
Geoff Pevere, Toronto Star
Invincible is a working-class jock Cinderella fantasy with the sincerity of a beer commercial, the soul of a Republican incumbent, and the designer-flannel esthetics of an old Bruce Springsteen video.
-
Claudia Puig, USA Today
It may not break new ground, but Invincible is an entertaining film, awash in clichés but leavened by the charismatic performance of Mark Wahlberg as Vince Papale.
-
Richard Schickel, TIME Magazine
What's modestly refreshing about the way this story is told by director Eric Core and writer Brad Gann, is that the person with the largest doubts about going pro is Papele himself.
-
Jane Boursaw, Common Sense Media
Inspiring sports-underdog story for tweens and up.
-
Neil Miller, Film School Rejects
Mark Whalberg is surprisingly good, delivering a likeness to the real Vince Papale that is uncanny.
-
Gary Dowell, Baltimore City Paper
It may seem that Invincible takes too long to get to the football. But by the time it does get down to it, we've invested enough in Wahlberg and Kinnear to give a damn about the outcome of the all-important Big Game.
-
Felix Vasquez Jr., Cinema Crazed
I wonder how many more of these inspirational sports films we have to sit through in 2006.
-
Cole Smithey, ColeSmithey.com
Screenwriter Brad Gann shares the guilt for this predictable cinematic travesty along with composer Mark Isham whose bombastic musical score is akin to hammering a nail with a shotgun blast.
-
Tony Macklin, tonymacklin.net
Invincible is the story of Vince Papale, who was an actual figure -- a part-time bartender who went to a tryout, survived training camp, made the Eagles team, and became a Philadelphia legend.
-
Jim Lane, Sacramento News & Review
ricson (who doubles as cinematographer) has a good feel for urban grit and blue-collar dreams, and he gets good, unpretentious performances-especially from Wahlberg, who provides the movie's solid, dependable center.
-
Joe Lozito, Big Picture Big Sound
The script by newcomer Brad Gann hits all the right notes.
-
Felix Gonzalez Jr., DVD Review
Good, strong work from Disney.
-
Felix Gonzalez Jr., DVD Review
Though familiar and cliched, Invincible succeeds in spite of itself because it is so technically well done and full of heart.
-
Kam Williams, BlackFilm.com
Mating calls aside, the paint-by-numbers sports side of this picture is only likely to capture the imagination of kids under the age of ten.
-
Kam Williams, Mount Desert Islander
If you are willing to ignore its revisionist history, this paint-by-numbers sports flick is a cleverly scripted, frequently funny, feel-good flick.
-
Jette Kernion, Cinematical
As far as sports films go, Invincible doesn't offer anything original or notable ... except Mark Wahlberg's performance.
-
David Nusair, Reel Film Reviews
...Greg Kinnear is particularly engaging as Papale's coach...

Cast: Mark Wahlberg, Greg Kinnear, Elizabeth Banks, Kevin Conway, Michael Rispoli, Kirk Acevedo, Dov Davidoff, Michael Kelly, Melissa Demyan, Steve Staiger, Vincent Riviezzo Director: Ericson Core Summary: Devoted Philadelphia Eagles fan Vince Papale (Mark Wahlberg) has just lost his wife and his job as a substitute teacher. But by impressing his favorite NFL team's coach in open tryouts and winning a place on the field, he turns a terrible year into a winner. My Thoughts: "I really love football movies, being a football fan and all, but this movie was just OK for me. The acting was good. The story line was good. Its based on a true story of Vince Papale, who became a member of the Eagles football team as a 30 yr-old. He is the oldest rookie to make an NFL team. I just think there could have been more story. But it was a good decent football movie." -

Invincible is yet another feel good inspiring true story about an underdog who succeeds at doing something big. The story is about Philadelphia Eagles fan Vince Papale who has a chance to become a player of the Eagles after Eagles coach Dick Vermeil holds open try outs. Invincible as a film doesn't do anything new to the already familiar "inspiring" film formula, but it's still nonetheless a good film to watch. The acting is fairly good, and the story is still very engaging despite it's the type of story we've seen a hundred times before. The film does manage to make the viewer root for Vince Papale as realizes his dream and you feel good by the time the credits role. But like I said, it navigates the usual territory that all "inspiring' films take. The film is unfortunately predictable, and you know right off the bat that it will end on a high note. That's the only problem with these films, is that they to be the same, and all of them are predictable. But they always tend to be effective at entertaining you, and in the end, that's what counts. Though it's predictable, the story and acting are terrific, and this is a memorable feel good film that everyone, especially Football fans will enjoy. There are some solid performances by Mark Wahlberg and Greg Kinnear. Invincible may not do anything new, but it manages to a worthwhile view nonetheless. A well made film that can inspire anyone. -

Another biographic on American football since <i>Gridiron Gang</i>, but this is really magnificent true story of a dedicated fan who puts everything on the line to live the ultimate sports fantasy: playing for his favourite pro team. Mark Wahlberg makes an awesome performance as the league's oldest rookie who becomes a legend of the late 1970s. -

Invincible is definitely not anything special, and everyone will forget about it in about 10 years from now. There are so many true stories out there that have been done better than this, leaving this one to fade away. This true story of belief, courage, and heart rises to the top of it's genre for 2006 films, but I can;t say it does anything more than that. Mark Wahlberg plays the ideal football player and the outcome, just like any uplifting film, it fantastic. A very good film, but a film that will be sadly forgotten over time! -

Didn't want to watch it due to the excess of inspirational sport films, unending underdog stories. Got pulled into this one, it's stuffed with Wahlberg magic and is memorable for being spoofed by It's Always Sunny. -

Mediocre at best...Can't compare to the likes of "Remeber the Titans" or "The Blind Side". -

this is a solid flick. ive become a bit numb to sports movies over the years because of their predictable formulas, and although this followed many of those, i enjoyed it. it was shot well and entertained. -

As cliched as sports movies can come, but you can get around that with good performances. It's a pretty entertaining movie and captures the spirit of the time period well. Worth it if you like sports movies. -

A pretty solid inspirational sports flick with Mark Wahlberg in the lead. He plays Philly's local hero Vince Papale who started out as a bartender and made his way through NFL. A true underdog story based on a true story. If it comes to sports in films, you'll never go wrong with football. From "Remember the Titans" to "Gridiron Gang" and even "The Longest Yard", its the most enjoyable to watch even if you don't have a first hand clue about the rules and such. Like me, I just love those quarterbacks tackling each other like hell. If you want a feel good movie with some added football in the mix, then I suggest you go see this one. <b>4/5</b> -

A standard disney-sports movie about one going above expectations and coming out a winner. But I still liked it because I like Mark Wahlberg and Greg Kinnear, and it has it's 70s spirit, bell-bottoms and all. -

Just when you think you've seen everything in the tired sports movie genre, along comes Invincible. This movie really touches on an emotional level without resorting to heart-string-plucking or trite sentimentality. That doesn't mean the movie is devoid of inspirational moments, but when they do come-- they seem genuine and from the heart (as opposed as concocted by a desperate studio in need of a feel-good hit). Basically, it's what you'd expect a Disney-released movie to be...and more. Mark Wahlberg gives a stirring performance as the real-life bartender-turned-NFL-pro-player! His ambition is slightly beneath his rugged and coy exterior and is brimming and waiting to explode. When it does, the movie really picks up on inspiring vignettes without being clichéd or hoky. The cinematography is superb as exemplified by it's opulent and abundant slow-motion set-ups, 1970s period-setting yellow filter and the all-around AWESOME soundtrack which adds that much more nostalgia to the flick. This movie is definitely a must-see. It's a good-- true-- story and has magnificent acting by Wahlberg and Greg Kinnear; as well as ingenious directing by Ericson Core. NOTE: If you think the title sucks, think about it this way: the guy's name is Vince. Get it? InVINCEible!!! -

"Invincible" takes place in 1976, when with the thanks of a grateful nation for coaching the UCLA football team over Ohio State in the Rose Bowl(note: I am a Michigan fan), Dick Vermeil(Greg Kinnear) has been hired to coach the woeful Philadelphia Eagles, winners of three games in 1975.(See, you can't blame everything on Terrell Owens...) At his first press conference, Vermeil announces open tryouts. Vince Papale(Mark Wahlberg), a 30 year old, laid-off substitute teacher and part-time bartender whose wife just left him is egged on by his buddies to try out.(On the upside, there is a beautiful new bartender, Janet(Elizabeth Banks),at the bar whose only flaw is that she is a Giants fan.) So, he does and so impresses the coaching staff that he is invited to training camp... Based on a true story, "Invinicble" is a barely sentimental movie about how sports can be an emotional uplift for an entire city from the daily misery. I like how the movie showed the south Philadelphia neighborhood where the movie takes place and how it brings up unemployment, unions and strikes but I don't think sports can be used as an adequate substitute for not having a decent job or any other signs of a good life.(If the men escape their lives in this fashion, then what about the women? With three exceptions, we only get to see the men.) Also, the movie treats the Eagles as the only sports team in Philadelphia, but in reality the 76ers, Flyers and Phillies all made the playoffs in 1976. And the stadium in the movie does not resemble old Veterans Stadium in the least. -

My husband had tears in his eyes at the end but it was just an okay movie to me. I like how Papale was a symbol of hope to the people who were losing their jobs. I liked the special features at the end with the real Papale. He was more inspiring than Mark Wahlberg's Papale because it seemed Wahlberg's character wasn't really excited to be a football player in the beginning... he was just doing it for a job and didn't really want to in the first place. But the real Papale wanted nothing more than to play for the Eagles. -

The year is 1976 and Vince Papale is a part time substitute teacher recently released from his job, a part time barman and separated from his wife. Vince is also an avid Philadelphia Eagles fan who plays Football games with his friends on the local backlots. Following a disastrous season in 1975, new Eagles coach, Dick Vermeil, decides upon a bold strategy to inject some new blood into the team - an open try-out session. Following some goading and encouragement by his friends, Papale attends the session and amongst the various out of shape would bes and over zealous Eagles fans, Papale defies the odds and is selected to attend Training Camp. Against a backdrop of team mates who want the 30 year old Papale to fail and burdened by the expectations of a group of friends who are either out of work or fighting to keep their jobs, Vince has to call on courage and resources that have never been tested before and repay the faith shown to him by Vermeil. This film from the Disney follows a path laid out by films like Rocky and Disney's own baseball predecessor, The Rookie, where a man with an outside chance is given his shot at greatness. Whilst this is a fictionalized account of a true story, the script and direction is functional and predictable - let's face it this is a Disney film and you don't seriously think that the lead character is going to fail? Mark Wahlberg is a suitable lead in the role of Papale. He gets to show the various facets of what is expected of the "hero" character in a Disney sports film - self doubt, courage in the face of odds stacked against him and determination to succeed despite those odds. In addition to those qualities, he also has an easy-going charm and an athleticism that doesn't make the character look fake. Greg Kinnear portrays Dick Vermeil, and even though he does well in the role as a coach, he isn't given the opportunity to portray a coach under pressure to deliver and the problems he faces are very much off stage, except in the case of a hostile television press. Whilst I appreciate that this is very much Vince's story, it would have been nice to have seen more of the story from Vermeil's perspective. Elizabeth Banks co-stars as Janet Cantrell, the cousin of Vince's pub landlord employer, and whilst this would traditionally be the "girlfriend" role, this isn't the case for the majority of the film - in fact she only becomes Vince's girlfriend late on in the film, for most of the time she is a friend and support to Vince - and a solid job Banks makes of it too. Solid is also what I would describe the main supporting cast who run the gamut of relationships you would expect in a group of friends and family. You have Vince's father (Kevin Conroy) who tries to keep Vince's feet on the ground; Max, Tommy and Pete (Michael Rispoli, Kirk Acevedo and Michael Kelly) who look to Vince to inspire hope in them in the face of various personal difficulties; and the beaten down, cynical and frightened Johnny (Dov Davidoff) who has lost all hope. Yes, it is your stereotypical hokey Disney sports film where the good guys always win and the only enemy is the hero's own self doubt. Whilst not being flashy or spectacular, this is a solid film and one that I'd recommend should you be able to rent it or see it on TV. -
