Years ago, Anton worked with Tony's father to create a new source of energy. But greed got the best of Anton, and now as he slips away, his son, Ivan (Mickey Rourke), vows to make Tony pay for the sins of his father. Meanwhile, Tony fends off efforts from smarmy Senator Stern (Garry Shandling) and military weapons expert Justin Hammer (Sam Rockwell) to get him to divulge the secrets of his powerful Iron Man suit. The powers that be are concerned that Tony's technology may fall into the wrong hands -- fears that are soon confirmed when the cocky billionaire entrepreneur is confronted in front of the entire world by Ivan, who has built his own weapon using stolen Stark blueprints. Later, as Lt. Rhodes (Don Cheadle) wrestles with the decision to personally deliver Tony's suit to the military, Ivan finds an unlikely ally in the quest to destroy Iron Man; Stark Industries legal consultant Natalie Rushman (Scarlett Johansson) reveals her connection to Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson); and Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow) takes on some new responsibilities. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

It's enjoyable to see a quality superhero dynamically and enthusiastically rendered.
-
Peter Rainer, Christian Science Monitor
Rourke puts a human face, albeit a bashed one, on comic book villainy.
-
Christopher Orr, The Atlantic
Even the director...seems to view the heavy clanking of mechanized men as a bit of a chore: the kind of well-prepared yet unremarkable meat course that must inevitably follow the delightful amuse bouche of Robert Downey Jr.'s portrayal of Stark.

Lisa Kennedy, Denver Post
Superhero Stark remains intriguing.

It's a solid blockbuster with a few faults that you just don't mind overlooking.

Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man? OK, pretty good. Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark? Brilliant.

The bar has been set for the 2010 summer blockbusters.

Ed Whitfield, The Ooh Tray
... The visual effects, though solid, may brighten the screen but are a poor substitute for characterisation and style - those two absent friends who we miss the most during the show.

In the land of sequels it's no Temple of Doom or Empire Strikes Back, but it's also not Rise of the Silver Surfer. Me and my box of Junior Mints, we still had a good time.
-
Joshua Starnes, ComingSoon.net
Iron Man 2 isn't an ideal sequel but it is good, fixing most of the problems of the first movie without giving up what made it work to begin with.
-
Mike Edwards, What Culture
Some critics may claim that the Iron Man films are simply dragging on a genre that's redundant (...) but my view is that it is rescuing a big part of the Marvel universe.

Jason Best, Movie Talk
Robert Downey Jr squeezes back into ... Tony Stark's incredible suit ... and his charismatic presence gives the movie a bigger boost than his character's jet-propelled boots.

Simon Miraudo, Quickflix
Iron Man bests the biggest adversaries of the superhero genre in his second outing: production troubles, sequel-bloat and overwhelming, unrestrained fanboy hype.
-
Matt Neal, The Standard
Fans will be satisfied, even if it doesn't match the nuanced and well-rounded brilliance of the first film. But many will be disappointed with this seemingly rushed follow-up.

Christopher Lloyd, Sarasota Herald-Tribune
Watching Iron Man 2 feels obligatory, like getting off a roller-coaster and climbing right back on again: Now that you know where the loops and drops are, it's not quite as thrilling.
-
Kam Williams, TheLoop21.com
An engrossing, entertaining and satisfying sequel from the beginning clear through the closing credits.

...the movie offers an abundance of thrills, laughs, and interpersonal communications. Yeah, action and talk; a little something for everyone.
-
Prairie Miller, NewsBlaze
Only the first of who knows how many sequels, and those clunky ferrous fashionistas are already getting a little, well, rusty. Downey retains his Chaplinesque eccentric charm, but it's wearing thin, adding up to a sequel with a serious Iron deficiency.
-
Ian Buckwalter, DCist
In the quest to do things bigger, louder, and faster than its predecessor, excess can get a little... excessive. But this is still miles ahead of the average summer festival of fireballs, owing in large part to the great ensemble and snappy dialogue.

I think that it was better than the first one. If you want action. That's what you get. And there's some good actors in it -

Your typical super-hero movie. Filled with too many explosions and bad storytelling. The original was capable of doing both much better. -

It ended with everyone still strangers to me. But hey, there is a lot of cool and sexy eye-candy! The action sequences were at least coherent, unlike a lot of movies, and left plenty of room for humor. -

On my first viewing I didn't enjoy it, but on a second viewing it was actually a great movie. Tony Stark is on top, he is rich, famous, and the hero Iron Man, but his life may not be the same when he must face a new enemy out for revenge named Ivan Vanko. The plot of the film is not as exciting as the first, but its a great first movie that will lead to the Avengers in 2012. The cast is good, other than Don Cheadle not being as good as the last actor and Mickey Rourke being horrible in this, but the rest is a good cast. The action is awesome and cool but not as mind blowing as the first. The effects might be better than the first, but its hard to say. Overall a awesome movie, but cannot live up to the first film. -

The first Iron Man is a very generic feature film. And this one is no difference. It delivers what you expect an Iron Man 2 film to do. A bit of plot, action, romance and a bad guy who seems to be better than Iron Man. The acting by Robert Downey Jr is alright but Don Cheadle makes a good Russian but I still like Iron Man's friend, the air force guy who ever he is. A bad script paired with a big budget makes something like a Michael Bay film. But sometimes the film does slow down and makes some emotional scenes but I would not recommend it every day. The first one is better and unfortunately we seem to be in for a third instalment as if you wait until the very end of the credits we see someone from The Avengers digging something out for what looks like a crashed UFO. Overall a poor script and too many explosions as is expected with blockbusters and superhero films. But that is what most people want and that is what is given. A bit of nonsense as I usually say for a night if you don't want anything too serious and for something slightly more family friendly when it comes out on DVD. In three words, Explosions with nonsense ** 2 Star -

Of all the sequels, this is one of the best, and to me it is superior to the first film. Mainly because of a extremely funny performance by Robert Downey Jr. and a very threatening performance by Mickey Rourke. The effects in this movie are top notch, and all the fights are incredible to watch and really get the blood pumping. Newcomer to the film is Don Cheandle (Hotel Rwanda) who replaces the previous actor who played Tony's (Robert Downey Jr) friend in the previous film, and he does a phenomenal job and to me does a better job than the previous actor. The best scene between the two characters to me is the fight they have when Tony is drunk at a party, and Don takes one of his suits and fights him because he wants him to stop making a fool of himself. Mickey Rourke gives arguably his best performance as a villain in this movie, he has some extremely well written dialogue in this film and with his good Russian accent it just adds to the dialogue as well as adding character to this, well, character. -

Jon Favreau's second outing with the character and cast isn't as refreshing as the first film was, but it is still a good superhero movie. Downey is as brilliant as ever as Tony Stark, and the rest of the cast is also very well rounded. Rourke does a great job with Ivan Vanko, the infamous Whip Lash, and Sam Rockwell does a great job as Justin Hammer. Scarlet Johansson is also very...ahem...entertaining as Black Widow. The visuals and effects are as good as ever, but there is still a lack of action sequences (there are maybe 2 that Iron Man is actually involved in), but when they are done, they are done VERY well. Comic book fans will be treated to delight as Samuel L. Jackson enters the story as Nick Fury, and the storyline begins to take shape as a setup for 'The Avengers' film, but that's okay. It's entertaining and refreshing to experience something a part of the story that's not solely about IRON MAN. It's not as entertaining as the first, but the Iron Man franchise is still doing better as a superhero film than a lot of the other ones are doing nowadays. -

Saw it again! This movie just soars with greatness all around it!!! Every part of this story was great including the special effects and sound, it was simply an amazing film to see. I wanna watch it again and again and again!!! Six months after the end of the first movie, Tony Stark (Robert Downey, Jr.) has used his Iron Man armor to bring about a negotiated peace treaty between the major super powers of the world, and his immense popularity with the general public is only furthered when he fulfills his father's dream by opening the "Stark Expo", to showcase all the latest inventions that will benefit the world. Stark is, however, still vilified by the United States government, and Senator Stern (Gary Shandling) in particular, who demands that he hand his armor technology over for military application. Stark refuses, publicly shaming rival Justin Hammer (Sam Rockwell) in the process by highlighting his own failed attempts at recreating the technology. All is not well in Stark's life, however: he has discovered that the palladium in the arc reactor keeping his heart beating has begun to poison his body, slowly killing him, and all attempts to find a substitute element have failed. Slowly going off the rails as a consequence of what he believes to be his impending death, he appoints his former personal assistant Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow) CEO of Stark Industries, replacing her with Natalie Rushman (Scarlett Johansson). While racing in Monaco, Stark is attacked by Ivan Vanko (Mickey Rourke), who has constructed a miniaturized arc reactor of his own, including whip-like attachments harnessing the electrical energy. Defeating Vanko with the aid of his Mark V armor (a transforming briefcase), Stark discovers that Vanko is the son of disgraced Russian physicist Anton Vanko, who collaborated on the first arc reactor with Stark's father Howard (John Slattery). Vanko is promptly broken out of jail by a revenge-seeking Justin Hammer, who puts him to work fashioning a line of "Iron Drones" that he will use to upstage Stark at his own Expo. Tony throws what he believes will be his last birthday party and promptly proceeds to get drunk whilst wearing the Iron Man armor, forcing his friend Lt. Colonel James Rhodes (Don Cheadle) to don the Mark II armor and subdue him. Disgraced, Stark is approached by Nick Fury of S.H.I.E.L.D (Samuel L. Jackson), who provides him with a chest of his father's old artifacts that can hopefully be used to find a cure for his palladium poisoning. Reviewing the film reels in the chest, Stark discovers a message from his father that leads him to the original 1974 diorama of the Stark Expo: in reality, a disguised diagram for the atomic structure of a new element. Stark hand-builds a particle accelerator with the aid of his computer J.A.R.V.I.S. (voiced by Paul Bettany) and synthesizes this new element, creating a new triangular chest arc that cures his poisoning. Simultaneously, at Stark Expo, Hammer unveils his new military drones, captained by Rhodes in a heavily-weaponized version of the confiscated Mark II armor. Unfortunately, it is soon discovered that Vanko has complete control of both the drones and Rhodes's new armor, and Stark arrives just as they go on the attack. As Stark battles against these remote-controlled enemies, Happy Hogan (Jon Favreau) and Natalie (an undercover S.H.I.E.L.D. agent named Natasha Romanoff) race to Hammer's Queens facility to stop Vanko. By the time they arrive, Vanko has already departed for the Expo in a new, more powerful suit of armor, but Natalie is able to give Rhodes control of his armor again so that he and Stark can fight Vanko together. The two armored allies combine their powers and successfully take Vanko down, but his armor and drones are revealed to have been equipped with self-destruct charges. As they begin to go off, Stark races to save Pepper, rescuing her at the last minute. After landing on a roof she quits her CEO position, and she finally gives Tony a kiss, to which they both find Rhodes sitting a few meters away. He then claims he was there first so they should get their own roof after Stark tries to defend himself. At a debriefing, Fury informs Stark that while Stark is "unsuitable" for the "Avengers Initiative", S.H.I.E.L.D. wants Iron Man as a consultant. Stark agrees on the condition that Senator Stern present him and Col. Rhodes with their medals for bravery. In a post-credits scene, S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Coulson (Clark Gregg) is seen driving to a remote impact crater in the New Mexico desert. As he informs Fury over the phone that they've "found it", the crater is shown to contain Mjolnir, the hammer of Thor. -

Though biased, since I didn't exactly love the first Iron Man, I can safely assume I am not alone when I say this was a complete disappointment. Like many others, the superhero genre is one I watch in earnest, never criticizing it for comedic relief, stellar effects, and villains that make Lugosi look like an infant. Still, we have all been let down by the recent slew of crap that has been parading in theaters for the past several summers, and this release proves studios are just done trying to keep us from getting pissed off. Strong words, but the fact that there is an actual scene where Stark pretends to crap himself in the suit (oh yes, this happens) makes for a perfect example of laziness. The final battle is definitely better than the anticlimactic one from the previous film, but it's the only interesting thing about the movie. Less action this time, and more emphasis on Stark's struggles, not all that interesting considering the plot holed story (Nick Fury isn't indicated in SHIELD until he's on screen for at least ten minutes, leaving people in the dark to who the hell he is.) and bogus comedy, which is as immature as the racist robots from Transformers 2; a decent comparison, to be quite frank. Stay far away from this Marvel fiasco, and rewatch The Dark Knight as per usual. -

Robert Downey Jr. is back in the suit once again in the sequel to the 2008 superhero surprise hit. The film picks up immediately after the events of the first movie, in which Tony reveals to the world that he is Iron Man. Stark now faces pressures from the government, the press, and the public to share his technology. During all this, Tony faces two villains. The first villain is Whiplash played superbly by Mickey Rourke. The second villain is Tonys rival weapons manufacturer Justin Hammer played by Sam Rockwell. A brief but impressive stint in the flick was turned in by Mickey Rourke who played the villain Whiplash with gusto. The same cannot be said for the second villain Justin Hammer, he is over-the-top, a bit goofy and not intimidating at all. Unfortunately, he has much more screen time than the character Whiplash. The visuals in this movie definitely match the quality of the first movie. Unfortunately, Whiplash and the visuals are the only good things I can say about this movie. The movie lacks the charm and fun factor of the first movie. The humor feels lack luster and a little mean spirited. Tony Stark is not the likeable eccentric he was in the first movie, this time around he comes across a bit cocky, arrogant and lacking the charm from the original. The story often lacks focus which I found a bit confusing. In this installment of Iron Man there seems to be less action scenes which made the original a great time at the movies. Halfway throuhg the film morped into a advertisement for the upcoming Avengers movie, also a Marvel owned franchise. I am not sure audiences want to pay for and watch a set-up for a future movie, they want to escape in an exciting superhero adventure. I honestly felt that the ending was a bit anti-climatic. Quite frankly they could have done a better job by engaging super villain Whiplash much more into the climax. I felt like I was watching a video game that the audience cannot play. Overall, Iron Man 2 was a bit boring and somewhat forgettable. From my perspective this sequel was in no way terrible but could have been a whole lot better. -

Another great action, superhero movie. Definitely not as good as the first, but I still absolutely loved it. Robert Downey Jr. is great, and Gwyneth Paltrow is again, perfect. The addition of Scarlet Johansson was very nice as well. Great film! -

When Iron Man came out and I made those complaints about "realistic constraints" I really didn't expect the franchise to take a completely different turn and throw Rockwell's Justin Hammer at us. Honestly? The guy's a joke. He constantly bleeds comical villain on us, carrying that sleaze-ball businessman archetype while he struts his way from one display of incompetence to another. As for whiplash, thank god for Micky Rourke because as an actor he already carries the presence.needed to play his character. Good thing he was also barely able to carry Hammer on his back as well in this villain team-up. Don't get me wrong though, Iron Man is literally "bigger" than the first movie both as a comedy and as a visually enthralling ride of guns n' explosions. Save for the cheesy final battle with Whiplash there are a lot of expected and rewarding scenes in this movie that any Iron Man/Marvel fan should enjoy. An explosion of fun, give er' a watch! -

"This is it, Summer has officially started" Warning, this review may be bias. What can i say, a huge comic junkie going to watch Marvels first movie of the year, you should tell i am hyped. I tried to stay as more neutral as possible like any movie critic should be, but it was hard, i am a comic junkie! The movie itself is not amazing, there inst any memorable scene, nothing was outstanding, but to see all of Marvel world come together, thats a thumbs up, to see new characters be developed, S.H.I.E.L.D and the avengers coming closer and closer is thrilling. But lets just concentrate on this movie The acting i think was quite fun, and this time the big stand out was Rockwell with his funny new portrait of hammer, as well as Mickey who played quite a fun villain in the screen. Everything else was just alright, this is the type of movie that the acting does not influence the movie itself. The plot of the movie, and here i must admit was tedious, however do not get me wrong, its not because of the "there is no action" argument, in fact i liked to see less explosions on the big screen, but its because the movie starts of bad, it wears of the audience for the amazing ending it has. So despite the slow start the movie is quite a fun ride. The blending in of special effects and high tech gadgets are "cool" and fun to see. But just so i can get it straight, my favorite thing about this entire movie, is to see the Marvel world come together, to see Nick Furry, Black widow and Warmachine come together is what makes this movie watchable. However if i wasn't into the comic books and just went to watch iron man 2 because its the first summer 2010 blockbuster, i would lie, i would be let down. The plot can come out perplex for some, so with that in mind its up to the viewers. Tony Stark: I am Iron Man. The suit and I are one. -

Gotta say, I'm a sucker for super hero movies. Especially Marvel movies, since I used to read all the comics as a kid. With "Thor" coming out, I decided to rewatch this, since it ends with a good lead in to "Thor". This isn't better or worse than the first one, I'd say it is actually on par with the the original. The action is great and the effects are spectacular. But what really stands out with the "Iron Man" movies is Robert Downey Jr.'s performance as Tony Stark. He is just so funny, arrogant, and just an overall bad ass guy. Most heroes are too serious, but Stark is just a cocky prick who lights up the screen. The rest of the cast is great as well, and I love the integrated of S.H.I.E.L.D. Plus, Whiplash is awesome, one of the better villains in super hero movies. I'm really amped up for "Thor" and "Captain America", but what I really can't wait for is the "Avenger" movie. If you haven't seen either "Iron Man" movie, then get out from your rock and pop these suckers in, cause they are great roller coaster entertainment. -

Amazing villain, hero, and story line. Still Iron Man 2 proves to be a worthy sequel although not as brilliant as the first. Understandable, considering the movie was just a set up for "The Avengers." Worth every penny.
