August Schellenberg, Brian Cox, David Ogden Stiers

A complete lack of imagination is what qualifies this as a B movie. Thankfully, this snowy adventure about a boy and his dogs is charming enough to entice the kiddies. Charismatic MacKenzie Astin play...( read more  read more... )s a teenager trying to save the family farm by entering a 522-mile sled-dog marathon. Except for Astin, the lusciously scenic background has more depth than most of the characters. This is so predictable you could take a nap and miss nothing except a few rousing scenes in the 1917 Winnipeg-to-St.-Paul sled race. Although this is visually more appealing than most family fare, one wishes more attention had been paid to the script. --Rochelle O'Gorman

Its good to see that in 1994 Excellent and Clean movies were still being put out with the Disney name attached to them, unlike those of this day and age with Disney / Pixtar label. After all old Walt would turn in his grave at some of the modern day Disney films, but this is not ...( read more)one of them, who ever wrote the plot for this web page is way off base ( matter fact it's a copy from Amazon dot com). This is an excellent movie about a 17 year old boy racing across Canada to St Paul Minnesota in a dog sled race to win $10000 to save his Mom's farm and go to college. All the things in a Disney movie that makes it good including tears (Pass a Kleenex), are found in this movie. This is based on the 1917 Dog Race in Canada combining 2 characters into one. Its worth sitting down with the pop corn and just enjoying, and of by the way you don't have to be a kiddy to enjoy it. 5 stars nothing less.

Based on a true story, this is a thrilling and visually striking adventure movie that is perfect for the entire family. It's good clean fare for kids, with enough action and excitement for adults. Mackenzie Astin gives an earnest performance as Will Stoneman, who in true Disney f...( read more)ashion, competes in a 500 mile dog sled race to save the family farm. Set in the early 1900's it's a throwback to the old school Disney movies with clear cut good buys and bad guys, and simple cause for the audience to rally around. Kevin Spacey plays a newspaper reporter that covers the race, and turns young Will into an American folk hero for his feats during the race. The snow covered lanscapes that the race takes place across are really beautiful. The race itself is exciting, and you can't help but get swept up in it all. The heart of the movie is Will's relationship with his team of dogs, and in particular, his lead dog, a pure white Huskie named Gus. Anyone who loves dogs will be immediately drawn in. It's formulatic of course, but it's done in the finest Disney family movie tradition. You come to root for Will and his team so much, you may very well find yourself on the edge of your seat for the thrilling conclusion to the race.

Sean Astin's bro does a good job here. Spacey as the reporter is a surprise. Dogsledding is an underrated sport.

Disney drew on a true story for this wonderful piece of family entertainment. Set in 1917, it tells the story of a South Dakota teenager who enters the world's toughest dog-sled marathon, both to prevent the loss of the family farm following the death of his dad and to pay for hi...( read more)s education. The formula is as per most disney films of the era, but very well acted and its impossible not to end up cheering on the underdog (scuse the pun) at the end. Its important with these films that the lead role is strongly acted and can illicit your sympathy and support, and the lead actor does this brilliantly. This really was a lot better than I expected and couldnt stop myself from getting caught up in it. Okay so the whistling bit is a little over the top and rates a gonzola in the cheese factor, but its got the brilliant Kevin Spacey and brian Cox to lend it some oomph just when you think its starting to flag.

This movie is for the young spirited adult. One should see this movie like a child or else you'll find the movie boring. It's predictable yet, very touching. It is more favorable if watched together by the whole family. But still, it's one of my favorites. I'm a Disney movie fan.

(1994 Director: Charles Haid) 1917 Winnipeg-to-St.-Paul Dog Sled Race....Kevin Spacey plays his villainous role deliciously! Do not listen to this dreadful reviewer who wrote this derrogatory blurb! This is truly quite a magnificent movie....the reviewer must have his mind in the gutter (& x-rated flicks!)

This movie is a great one. I loved it and have only watched the whole thing three times. Other parts have been watched more then that. Iron Will was played by a very good actor, and so was the reporter Kingsley (Kevin Spacey), they all did a brilliant job.
