Never had I heard of this film before last week, it just suddenly showed up in my video store and somehow it caught my eye, I read about it and saw it was an Australian film with a very known universal cast so I thought I'd give it a go....and I must say I was pleasantly surprised.
The film has this strange hitchcockian feel about it, where alot of it is kept in suspense and mystery and formula is played out up until the very surprising, very clever twist. The film does appear like its a TV film, the feel of it gives that impression and I guess because it was released straight to DVD, I am surprised how this slipped past theaters, it has so much more if you look past the TV movie feel, there is quite a bit of nicely built up and very slow suspense, it really does grip you, just as long as you survive the first 30 minutes and try and look past some flaws in parts during the first hour of the film. The sub-characters are all australian, with them all giving pretty mediocre performances, Susan Sarandon is actually about average here, but then again I have never really seen her as more, but Emily Blunt gives quite a subtle and chilling little performance, proving once again that she is the new face on the block, she is certainly going to go far.
Overall, the film certainly came as a surprise, the film ultimately will be viewed as a Saturday night film because of it going straight to DVD, but underneath a few flaws and a strange TV movie look, there is a hitchcockian feel with slow suspense and a very well plotted and surprising twist ending. If you ever see this in video stores, I'd recommend you watch it.
