Depicts lots of violence. The story itself is very simple, most of it ends near the middle and nothing much happens afterwards, as the film starts in the climax and goes backwards. BTW, the idea of going backward was in my opinion used more effectively in Memento, where it was needed as a part of the story because of the main character's memory disorder.
Only interesting part was the reference to An Experiment With Time, and Alex's precognitive dream of getting into that tunnel before the incident. But unfortunately the movie did not really capitalize on that or any related concept.
Also not sure what reversibility exactly the director thought the title of the movie signifies.
Certainly not a pleasant viewing experience, but it surely wasn't meant to be. Disorienting and disturbing masterpiece that I can't really recommend, simply because I realize most of you will either (a) watch it and call me sick for giving it 5 stars, or (b) watch about 20 minutes of it, then remove it from the DVD player and never trust my recommendations again...
A challenging film in every way...
Not the first film to employ reverse chronology, but the most effective. I put off watching this film for ages as I didn't think it was my kind of film; from what I'd heard it sounded gratuitous and misogynistic. For the first 10 minutes the shaky camerawork is so excessive I didn't think I would stick it out, yet by the end of the film I thought "that's so much better than it's reputed to be". The notorious lengthy rape scene is difficult to watch, but I think it is artistically viable for the same reason the first 20 minutes of Saving Private Ryan is - it's so real it makes you stop and think. Filming sexual violence will always be a difficult area, and unfortunately some men find the rape scene arousing; something which is clearly not intended.
The film's metaphysical view of time - inspired by J.W. Dunne's "An Experiment With Time" is reminiscent of the ending of American Beauty, and like that film, despite all the bleakness there is beauty also. (Though in the case of this film. the beauty only comes out through the reverse chronology). Also, best use of Beethoven's 7th Symphony since Zardoz
I just came from watching Memento and I guess the editing style made me think of this film. Of all the films I have seen, excluding the horror/thrillers, I must say Irreversible shocked me the most. I almost felt like skipping some of the scenes but they were more intriguing than they were graphic so i was compelled to watch the whole of the movie. I have never seen so much anger, cruelty and hunger for revenge in a film until this one. It's an amazing story, but it would probably take a long time for me to want to see this again.
The camera work at the beginning got a little annoying, but after you get into "club rectum" it's impossible to pull away though every measure is taken to make you want to. I don't know if all ten minute of rape were necessary for us to know that a character had been raped, but the brutality does alter the context of everything in the film. It's really disturbing, and manages to employ the backwards editing technique to great effect. The acting was amazing, the Godardesque discussion on the train was hilarious, and the 2001 wormhole ending was brilliant. If you want to see a literate, savage, sophisticated "revenge" film, which is far greater than the sum of it's parts, and manages to say some profound things about fate, choice, and of course revenge. Not for the weak of stomach, as this is very, very, difficult to watch, but to the brave go the spoils. Phenomenal filmmaking, and perhaps the best film about "revenge", ever made.

This one is hard to recommend. It's not entertainment. It is by far the most difficult movie to watch. It's brutal and disturbing (consider yourself warned). But if you can stomach it enough to put yourself through it, and see past the brutality, it's a masterpiece. Violence like this happens every day in real life and it blows past you. Not after this movie.
True Art. Realistic Portrayal Of Life. The Rape And Violance Isnt Just The Bullshit Comedy Of Films Such As "Last House On The Left" - This Is The Way It Is.
OK, So Im Not A Great Writer, But Please See This Film For What It Realy Is.And How It Changes Your Opinion On Life, Instead Of Hearing That A Woman Was Raped And Murded In The Paper, Now You Know How Bad Rape Realy Is.
*laughs at the people who can only define it as a "sick movie" and not see it for the masterpiece it is.* :)
