It Takes Two

Ashley Olsen, Kirstie Alley, Mary-Kate Olsen, Philip Bosco, Steve Guttenberg

This first theatrical outing for the ubiquitous Olsen twins is their take on The Parent Trap meets The Prince and the Pauper. One plays a foster child under the care of a single social worker (Kirstie...( read more  read more... ) Alley) whose marital status prevents her from adopting her favorite charge. The other is the neglected daughter of a "bazillionaire" (Steve Guttenberg), who's about to marry a gold-digging socialite (played nastily by Jane Sibbett, Ross's first ex-wife on TV's Friends). The foster kid comes to a charity camp abutting the rich girl's summer estate and--presto--the identical strangers meet, hatch a plan to solve both their dilemmas, and switch identities. Directed by Andy Tennant (Ever After), this PG-rated film features some decent G-rated chemistry between Alley and Guttenberg and surprisingly uncloying performances by Mary-Kate and Ashley. The rating is for mild language. (Ages 5 and up) --Kimberly Heinrichs

I watched this movie SO many times when I was little...before the Olsen twins became the skanks they are today. Very cute movie for young girls.

Ashley is Alyssa, a lonely rich kid without a mom; and Mary-Kate is Amanda, a feisty orphan who gets the idea to switch identities and fix up her totally cool social worker (Kirstie Alley) with Alyssa's totally nice, widowed dad (Steve Guttenberg). Besides a rather trite subplot ...( read more)involving Callaway's impending marriage to a snob-only-a-child-can-see, It Takes Two does have some refreshing elements, especially considering it is actually a resident in been there, done that territory. Not unlike the Parent Trap or the long defunct Rags to Riches television series, It Takes Two is harmless, good natured fun that is easily digested by parents and kids alike. Guttenberg fulfills his role as the unassuming leading man perfectly. The usually-grating Alley even pulls off a Look Who's Talking-like charm as the affable mother figure.

I hate the Olsen twins. People excuse their acting in this film because they were only 9. That trick ain't gonna work on me.

So here's the deal: there are these two kids, who are in no way related, but look identical. One is an orphan, the other lives with her super - rich dad, ...( read more)Roger Callaway. In an attempt to seperate Callaway from his nasty fiancé, Clarice (quite a good performance by Jane Sibbett), the twins set up the caretaker of the one with the father of the other.

Kirstie Alley and Steve Guttenberg have some chemistry, I'll admit. But that still does not apologize for the stolen storyline and corny script.
