It's Alive

Andrew Duggan, Guy Stockwell, James Dixon, John P. Ryan, Michael Ansara

It's feeding time! This enjoyable schlock centers on an all-American middle-aged couple, the Davies (John P. Ryan and Sharon Farrell), who want to have one more child in addition to their 11-year-old ...( read more  read more... )son. When the big day arrives, however, the Davies' baby turns out to be a mutated monster that kills when it's scared ... which is pretty much all the time. Think Rosemary's Baby but more graphically gruesome (and funny!).

This had the best PR and ad campaign. No big names, but it did well enough to garner two sequels. That's marketing friends!

It has its good moments, but gets murky when the police go hunting the monster-baby down in the sewers. They try to make it scarier by only offering brief glimpses of the creature. It's actually better than "Rosemary's Baby" in showing what a demon baby can do. It has somewhat ch...( read more)eap production values, but there are some suspenseful sequences.

    Fun horror nonsense from Cohen.

The special effects were decent enough for a low-budget film. Fine performances and a chilling score.
Not a bad flix but my problem with this movie is that it suffers from pacing issues and even at 90 minutes it feels too long.

This was similar to "Grace". I did enjoyed at first but later it became quite boring.

An under-rated, extremly odd and sometimes quite silly 70's horror filck. Gets a lot of criticism for being very silly, or if not that, is often filed in the "So bad it's good" category because of it, but I beg to differ. It is not actually too silly, and has some moments ...( read more)of genuine chills and an unexpected emotional climax.

To be honest, the only silly thing is the idea, and even then you can gleefully imerse yourself in that.

The best part of this is not the performances, not the directing, not the screenplay but the score. Watching the titles credits at the start, I was even more excited about the film when I saw Bernard Hermann's name come up. His moody pieces always suit the film and are all beautiful pieces of music, that also incite dread. This score is no exception.

The performances aren't as over the top as you would of first anticipate, but maybe that was for the best. Andrew Duggan as the baby's father is surprisinly good, especially at the climax. Although the other performances may not be exactly noteworthy, they are more than good and neither make the film worse, nor better.

I thought Larry Cohen directed this rather well. He creates an atmosphere which is hard to match and really holds back on the stupidity, stopping it from becoming an awful comedy horror like it could have turned out to be. No. There isn't really any comedy in it, if that is what you are expecting. All for the best, really.

So for an atmospheric, surprisingly good, horror, and aren't expecting a genre defining film (and you shouldn't) then this is actually worth a go. If ever a film deserves more praise than it gets, it is this one.

Saw it 'first run' in the late '70's. It scared the heck out of me!
