The director doesn't display the spirit of a natural entertainer; while intellectual notions abound, he never grabs the audience by the hand to pull them into the tale emotionally.
Hmm... This movie was a big dissapointment... With such a fantastic cast I was expecting a fantastic movie. Don't get me wrong, the acting was excellent, Joaquin Phoenix is a very good actor, Claire Danes performance was magnificent, and Sean Penn is one of my favorite actors ever, and as weird and small his part was, it was definitely well-portrayed. The settings of this movie are gorgeous, the skating scenes are incredible, and that talks very well about the direction. My problem with this film is the plot. It was boring, it was too incredible. I mean, yeah, I guess it could all happen in a future because of the humans corruption and the global warming, but come on!! Don't make me laugh wit such bullshit ideas! Not even the development of the characters was well-done. There was absolutely nothing that made me feel identified with them or the storyline. In fact, it got to the point where I was seriously annoyed by everything. I guess the movie has nice elements, it was merely a nice attempt to a new type of love story, but as a whole it doesn't really work.
Great camerawork and great cinematography but the story and the acting is absolutely terrible. The plot is simply ridiculous and it's all so far out that you never really get to care about the characters or the development of the storyline.
Pourquoi, à chaque fois que je vois la couverture de ce DVD je le reconnais jamais, et j'ai toujours la première impression qu'il peut être bon... ce film est MAUVAIS ! hihi
Danish director Thomas Vinterberg's English language debut. Extremely bizarre, futuristic and absolutely gorgeous to look at. Beautifully shot by cinematographer Anthony Dod Mantle, with some of the most visually arresting images I've personally seen, particularly a glorious final shot of the Flying Ugandans and an opening one of an aeroplane descending over a snowy landscape. Similar in tone to the work of Wim Wenders and Julio Medem, in the sense that it seems to be both vaguely apocalyptic and also not quite of this planet. It's both fun to try and figure out what's going on and frustrating not to be given any clear answers. Not a particularly good film, but a feast for the eyes.
The film is very abstract, even surreal at times, and doesn't attempt to make any logical and coherent sense (narratively speaking). The entire film is more like a dream, a bizarre trip into the subconscious of the main characters as they cope with the relationship between themselves and the world around them. Yes, the film's pacing is glacially slow, and yes, the film is pretentious in its audacity and disregard for logics. However, the performances are all superb, the visuals, atmosphere, and ambiance are beautiful and hypnotic, and the themes and issues explored are rich and complex. Those who enjoy these pseudo-art house affairs will no boubt embrace this picture, while others expecting a formulaic Hollywood thriller will be greatly disappointed...
i dont know what to say about this film. I love sean penn and joaquin, and i like weird films also, but for this, maybe i need to watch it again. i have to tell that it is an interesting perspective to show the end of the world, dead people laying down the road and no one cares about them, it is usual for them. One scene at the metro one person is sleeping and another man thought that he was dead and just try to take his watch. maybe it not that bad, yes i decided that i like it. Good work
Joaquin Phoenix, Claire Danes, and a startlingly coiffured Sean Penn topline this visually striking hybrid of science fiction and art-house drama from Dogme 95 co-creator Thomas Vinterberg (The Celebration). Phoenix and Danes are a recently se...
Had potential. What happened? Who knows. Casting was completely off. Dialogue seemed to go nowhere. Accents were atrocious. Had an interesting feel to it, good cinematography, but fell completely flat. I wanted to like it.
This movie had me SOOOO confused at the beginning. But it is SO incredibly good. I wonder if it got any awards. And as I looked into the eyes of Joaquin at the end in the snow when he is holding Claire...And heard his voice...I thought of him and his brother when his brother died in real life. I wonder if he pulls from that tragedy in his life to get that emotion.....or if that tragedy is buried deep within him. Joaquin and Claire did an excellent job in this movie. It was a bizzarre movie. But I ADORED and LOVED it.
Not exactly good, but interesting and ambitious. If only Claire Danes either wasn't there or knew how to consistently do an accent (hers in this will remind you of Costner in Robin Hood).
The best scene, and funniest scene, is close to the end where all the clones are skating on ice. I don't want to spoil it but only one of the skaters comes away alive. This scene made the movie somewhat worthwhile.
Waste of TIME!! Very Weak movie, DO NOT WATCH, if you do end up watching it, side effects may include: Suicide, murder ramapages, road ramapage, any kinds of ways of harming yourself, and many others...
I think this film just tries really hard to make a big impression. It fails in the fact that it tries to tell too many stories and not really getting to the point with any of them. The dead people in the streets that nobody cares about; what made the married couple separate; the climate disorder; the stranged brothers. They are really good ideas but they're not meant to be all clustered together like that, because then they don't really get the attention they deserve. It's got great cinematography though. Joaquin Phoenix and Sean Penn did a great job as always.
What the hell is this! Another film with artsy hopes that is just a big old mess. The plot was lame, the dialogue was lame, and the ending was lame. Why did Sean Penn agree to eb in this film...he is a much better actor than this film calls for...the same with Joaquin Phoenix. Definitely a waste of time!
I was so disappointed. This sounded so good when I heard about the storyline and the idea of nature going weird. The good actors couldn't save this, unfortunately. This flick could have been so much better.
NOt my favourite Joaquin Phoenix movie, but still a very fun movie. Clare Danes is a bit average in it. The story line is quite quirky. Definately worth a watch.
With random dead bodies, random flying Ugandans (no joke) and random flashbacks (and I mean absolutely random) it was no surprise that I not-so-randomly felt like changing the channel. This film tries too hard to be artsy, comes across as badly written science fiction, and fails with an underdeveloped plot. Any potential is lost in the poorly edited linear narrative and awkwardly odd acting.
most messages in this move are terribly clear - a little too clear, but a few are just way boyond any comprehension. What the hell's with her brother? and the clones... at least its captivating i guess
