Critic Reviews

  • Connie Ogle, Miami Herald

It's Kind of a Funny Story lacks substance, but after you've spent a short time in this ward, you have to agree with Craig: These crazies aren't so bad.

  • David Jenkins, Time Out

A pleasant movie, but no more.

  • Mick LaSalle, San Francisco Chronicle

The journey is aided immeasurably by the casting of Keir Gilchrist as young Craig. He has dark, sensitive eyes and a probity about him that wins you to his side.

  • Peter Rainer, Christian Science Monitor

Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden, the film's co-writing-directing team, are too principled to tip the film into the slacker reaches of sorrow.

  • Richard Roeper, Chicago Sun-Times

The writing-directing team of Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden have created a solid mix of serious, darker scenes and flights of fancy.

A week in a mental ward is one sobering reexamination and reappraisal for one depressed teen in this predictable New York dramedy. Zach plays Yoda.

It's a very gentle portrayal of mental instability and I really liked it for that. The mental ward was so peaceful and loving. I'm glad this fictional character got to stay in this kind of environment.

Bland is a good word to define this movie - not only does it feel sterile and tonally inept, but it also seems to be trying so hard to break free from those descriptors. However, the charming cast and incredible soundtrack really adds a lot to the movie, making it a movie worth… More

I liked this movie a lot. I definitely feel that it could have fallen victim to being portrayed as a comedy film when it is not a laugh out loud movie, so I'm glad that didn't happen.
