Adam Zolotin, Bill Cosby, Brian Kerwin

Jack is Francis Coppola at his most pointless noodling, looking for the film he wants to make instead of just making it. Robin Williams stars as 10-year-old Jack, a boy with an inexplicable dis...( read more  read more... )ease that ages him at four times the normal human rate. Kept at home like a contemporary Boo Radley, Jack becomes a neighborhood legend until his parents relent and send him to school. In time, the other kids befriend him and stay loyal as his hyperdevelopment puts a strain on his body and emotions. The idea is sound, but the execution is a bore. The best the script and Coppola can come up with are painfully long scenes in which Williams's character proves himself on the playground and in gross-out contests in a tree house. Coppola fishes around for signs of life and spontaneity in these scenes, but the film is actually best when Jack has to cope with certain feelings in his mature body (such as his attraction to a character played by Fran Drescher) that he isn't prepared for emotionally. Jack would have been a lot better if Coppola had embraced a plan from beginning to end and stuck to it. --Tom Keogh

"Jack" is a silly, genial and charming story about a "little" boy who ages four times faster than he should. It's a tragedy disguised as comedy. It has some comic elements but who couldn't admit the basic idea is rather sad.Williams really relieved the child inside of him. Bill C...( read more)osby is also splendid as Jack's sympathetic teacher Woodruff. For the sake of comparison I might mention that Penny Marshall's "Big" starring Tom Hanks is an outstanding, heart-warming classic and I've seen it many, many, many times but it's hard to get tired of a movie that's simply so enjoyable and entertaining. It gets a bit depressing at times and you can't help but feel sorry for Jack towards the end but all in all this is a fine movie about how cruel life can be to those with congenital problems.

This movie was disguised as a comedy but really it's sad! I guess that's why they added Bill Cosby to the mix.

Such a wonderful movie. I still can't watch it all the way through without crying. I enjoyed seeing Robin Williams doing a more serious role while still playing the role of a child. This movie was very well casted.
