Plot:
For Chinese cinema, the battle sequences are very impressive and technically impressive. They take up a most of the first half of the movie.
The second half deals with the human element, and the sacrifices made by soldiers who are to be honored because they're people, and not members of one side or the other. It all gels together nicely as well, thank God. Thanks to it's main character Zhang Hanyu, who acts his part to perfection.
Great film! ^_^
Fantastic chinese movie about war and honor. The story is simple and great, full of deep and emotional scenes. The performances are great, specially from Chao Deng. There is a lot of communist propaganda in this movie, but it follows a lot the american way of filming, wich is quite strange.
Quality war drama. Visceral fight sequences and nice emoitional depth. Fine performances throughout especially from the leads. Impressive
A great war movie. In the mind of saving private ryan. The 1st half is very brutal and gritty with leaveing the 2nd half to round up the movie and give it the emoition it needs.
O my days - I never thought I would in this lifetime watch a better post-80s war movie than Black Hawk Down but fuck me this was it. Simple plot devices yet so interestin. Engrossin, rewardin and thoroughly honest.
It's great to see a Chinese film that has little propaganda, but is a great old-fashioned war movie. The story of a soldier's guilt, not listening to his men, and searching endlessly for the retribution and freedom from his traumatized mind and the closure needed to complete this portion of his life. The battle sequences (which as I hear are staged/choreographed by the same folks who did Tae Guk Gi) did an amazing job and the opening battle scene is now one of my favorite war sequences of all time. There is some spectacular mayhem that is amazingly well executed. It also is photographed beautifully and has some visuals that an HK/Chinese crime cinemaphile like myself is not used to, such as the beautiful snowy landscapes of Northern China and the forests in autumn. The score is what hurts the film, especially where it's placed in the battle sequences, but even so, it's a masterfully crafted movie with strong performances and an engaging storyline.
