Plot:
This was a fantastic production by HBO. They chose the perfect actors for this as Giamatti and Linney shone here. Anyone interested in history at all should check this miniseries out. Everything about it was well done.
good acting not really much else to say. he was a strange character but one of vision and a man that changed the future of the us for ever
Along with Angels in America, this John Adams series is the best miniseries I've seen.
All the performances are great, with Paul and Laura delivering some of the best work of their career. The supporting cast is also great.
This miniseries provides one with more U.S. history than a whole year of school studies would. What a great achievement.
Be sure to run out and rent this one.
NOW NOMINATED FOR 23 EMMYS
A well told history of a sad story of a great man. John Adams stood many times alone in his unwaivering convictions as he watched infighting almost destroy the government he helped build and left him with no real friends in the end. This 7 hour epic was excellent and I recommend it to any history buff who loves to learn the real stories behind the canned history we are often led to believe is true.
Absolutely amazing production. Spot on acting, gorgeous sets/costumes, and a great story. LOVED IT.
Guaranteed to make you see the American Revolution and it's founding fathers in a whole new light.
HBO continues to amaze me with the quality of there productions.
All of the acting and story telling here is top notch.
Tak Fujimoto might have gone off the deep end with the dutch angles, but it's forgivable.
Often we hear in advertisements for projects like this one that what we are about to witness is certain to be the "mini-series event of the year." After watching HBO's 7-part mini-series, 'John Adams,' I can for once express that all the proud pronouncements leading up to its air-date are worthy of the finished product. Not only is it the mini-series event of 2008, but also deserves mention as one of this decade's finest made-for-television offerings. There is enough careful attention to detail in bringing the story of our nation's 2nd president to life that, whether or not you fancy trips back in time to the days of candle-lit rooms, powdered wigs, and horse-drawn carriages, the story itself is compelling enough and many of the themes, universally applicable in our present-day world. I admit knowing little about Adams before watching the mini-series, but somehow by the end of Part 7 he felt like an indispensable historical figure on par with the more familiar names -- Washington, Jefferson, Franklin, etc. -- that we learn about in school. Much of that credit goes to Giamatti for so ably conveying the ever-changing complexities in his character's life. We see his arrogance occasionally interfering with his ambitions for establishing a sovereign republic; the tenderness that he feels for his wife and children, but sometimes finds it most difficult to express in ways that they can perceive; and certainly it was a goal of the film-makers that we see his varied relationships with his fellow statesmen -- most interesting. Laura Linney's take on Abigail Adams is no less impressive, as she equally stands out as both a wise counselor and a dependable confidant to her husband. I would not have first thought of David Morse for the part of George Washington, but he manages to find the humble, quiet essence of an iconic figure. Tom Wilkinson and Stephen Dillane also will be favored contenders to win supporting actor trophies during the upcoming awards season for surpassing the challenges of their parts. Expect multiple nominations for 'John Adams' and well-earned honors for many of those involved with this excellent production.
