A very interesting concept, to say the least. I found this movie to be far ahead of it's time...
If you're a movie buff or someone who appreciates true cinematic skill and vision. definitely look into this film.

A very powerful anti-war story that was the inspiration of the Metallica song and video "One". The band currently owns the right to the film.

    Ehrm... It's... It's a... It's...
I don't really know what to say.
I guess this movie can be separated in two distinct dimensions. And the truth is that they really got me divided here. On one side you've got the real interesting approach which is set in reality, and on the other you've got the fantasy one, which if you ask me is a bit dull.
So, getting to the point, this story revolves around a young soldier who became a quadruple amputee during WWI. At the same time, he has also lost his eyes, ears, mouth and nose. Without such crucial sense organs and being unable to walk, this man is left lying in a hospital bed like a vegetable and treated as if though he had no conscious of the state he was in. But soon enough we find out the doctor's diagnosis couldn't be more wrong, as we get to witness him gradually becoming more and more aware of his degraded condition. And this is the best part of this movie, in my opinion. His monologues, his frustrated dialogue attempts, and his striving for communication with the outside world are very absorbing and utterly interesting. We get claustrophobic just by the thought of it.
Now... As the main character struggles to cope with that shocking reality, he seeks refuge in his own imagination and creates a fantasy world of his own, where he finds himself physically whole again and tries to clarify his mind through past memories and creative thinking. And, honestly, this part had everything to be my favorite, giving that I usually tend to appreciate originality a lot. But... It somehow failed to fall on my good side. And to tell you the truth, during those fantasy scenes, I constantly found myself talking to the screen and shouting orders like: "C'mon! Skip to reality, will ya?" or "Oh, look... Isn't that the beautiful young nurse who spanks your monkey every once in a while?... Wakey wakey!".
Anyways... I guess those fantasy scenes should have been a little less corny and a lot more mind screwing.
    Other than that...
Well... You still have the reality scenes to look for.
Or maybe you'll think differently and enjoy those scenes I've found to be dull
You wouldn't be the first one, you know?

Can you even begin to imagine what it would be like to still be alive...but everyone else around you thinks your dead? This film is a nightmarish tale of a soldier "killed" in WWI. In a devastating explosion, he loses his arms, legs and majority of his face. The doctor's believe that there couldn't possibly be any brain activity left. But we, the viewers, know different. As the doctor's keep this "living" body alive so they can study him more closely, we are taken on a harrowing journey through the mind of this man who slowly discovers what he has become. He can not speak. He can not see or hear. He can't even communicate through hand signals. As he slowly dissolves into madness, he sees blurring images of his past life and hallucinations of the coming afterlife (including Jesus played by Donald Sutherland). It's during a flashback conversation that he remembers the words of his father: "Do you remember your Morse Code?"

A disturbing movie of a young soldier who stepped on a landmine and lost his arms, legs, mouth, nose and ears and has become an subject of study at the hospital, the doctors thinking he is braindead. However, he is alive and conscious, and vast amounds of pondering and inner thought go by as he tries to communicate his wish of dying to the people "out there". Must see!

A very disturbing but extraordinary movie :)
Story of Joe, a young American soldier who gets shot by a shell in France during WWI. Very seriously injured, he loses his legs and arms, and doctors think he'll stay forever unconscious ; but he's totally aware of the world around him and tries to communicate.
The movie in an alternation between Joe's toughts about his life before the accident and his situation as a man imprisoned in his own body.

It is the adaptation of Donald Trumbo's book written in 1939 for which the author was condemned during Maccarthysm. D. Trumbo is the one who directed the movie and he really kept his own style, putting into pictures the whole atmosphere he created in the noveL.
It's really interesting because the result is a movie which mixes modernity and very classical style. Alternation Color/Black and white.
The immersion into Johnny's thoughts is really disturbing and becomes sometimes abstract, but the movie succeeds in moving the spectator with beautiful sequences. It can probably be considered as a masterpiece of pessimism, and one of the most efficient Anti-War movies.
+ Donald Sutherland in a Christlike figure.

Joe: Inside me I'm screaming, nobody pays any attention. If I had arms, I could kill myself. If I had legs, I could run away. If I had a voice, I could talk and be some kind of company for myself. I could yell for help, but nobody would help me.

Controversial and disturbing enough to spawn a Metallica superhit, One. Enjoyed the book much more, and was disappointed considering that Trumbo directed his own story.

Wonderfully put together, this anti-war film's occasional cheesiness is eclipsed by its stunning plotline.
