A good Thomas Hardy adaptation, needless to say, don't expect a happy ending. This film is quite hard going but very good!

Dry and depressing, this is a ode to a man that I never entirely met through out the running of this film. In fact, I still feel I don't know who Fawley is at all since all I ever saw was Eccleston and Winslet as another inspiring love interest.

The film tries too hard yet d...( read more)oesn't understand its source material enough to give it any kind of life. It wasn't even pretty to watch, despite the keen performances.

On rewatching, this movie is better. Well acted and it captures the book it is based off of well. Winslet is always so fresh, beautiful, and talented...even in a movie this far back in years. It's a movie that very much captures a period of time and the society behind it. A very ...( read more)well put toegther film.

No tengo en claro porque, pero me hizo pensar en el mundo y en la forma en que vivimos. La historia es muy triste, las actuaciones excelentes.

Was a very boring beginning and I didn't get any of it but when it had gone 21 minutes and 26 seconds it all became much better, when finally Kate Winslet came on screen.
This is such a fantastic and emotional drama and it makes your eyes get filled with tears.

    "Haven't we been punished enough?"

These are exactly my thoughts whilst watching this film - Thomas Hardy, haven't these characters been punished enough? And by the end I'm thinking - Michael Winterbottom, haven't we the audience been punished enough?! This is utterly dep...( read more)ressing and dreary all the way through. Hardy honestly seems to hate his protagonists with an unrelenting passion, as they experience nothing but misery and misfortune.

The tragedy may have been slightly acceptable had it not been a little too far-fetched in places. I found the notion of Jude's wife popping up everywhere and coincidentally happening to bump into him all the time a little ridiculous. And the characters are all so fickle! Particularly Winslet's character Sue, who you can't help but disliking by the end.

I also found it to be unecessarily explicit and graphic - not only Winslet's complete nude scene, and the scene in which we actually see the baby coming out as she's giving birth, but also moments like the killing and gutting of the pig. The point at which we find out that Jude's young son has killed himself and both his younger sisters, it all just becomes a bit too much and I find myself wanting to throw the film out of the window. I don't see the point in going along with these characters if all that befalls them is doom and gloom - it just makes you completely miserable, and I found myself having to laugh at it in order to stop myself from becoming depressed.

I would certainly never give this a second viewing, and would advise all to steer quite clear of it! Not only because it's depressing, but because I didn't seem to take much from it for all my efforts either. The film just seems a huge advertisement in fearing God, as it does nothing more than portray the idea that you'll be punished with dreadful misfortune if you ever follow your dreams, fall in love, or disobey his will in any way.

Well, if that's what you look for in a film... this picture may be all smiles, but the film certainly isn't!

Most depressing movie ever. Winterbottom, way to get me down again, man.
  • July 7, 2009
Michael Winterbottom's best film this impressively mounted version of Thomas Hardy's novel is beautifully shot (and, criminally, the r2 dvd is pan and scan only).
Most impressive though are the performances he draws from Christopher Eccleston, Rachael Griffiths as Jude's first wi...( read more)fe and a sensational Kate Winslet as Sue.
