Junebug

Alessandro Nivola, Amy Adams, Amy Barefoot, Ben McKenzie, Beth Bostic

A dealer in outsider art threatens the equilibrium of her middle-class in-laws in North Carolina. Madeline is a go-getting art gallery owner from Chicago, recently married to George, a near-perfect So...( read more  read more... )uthern beau. When Madeline needs to close a deal with a reclusive North Carolina artist, George introduces her to his family: prickly mother Peg, taciturn father Eugene, cranky brother Johnny, and Johnny's pregnant, childlike wife Ashley, who is awe-struck by her glamorous sister-in-law. Madeline's presence exposes the fragile family dynamics as hidden resentments and anxieties surface.

I?d wanted to see this for so long but unfortunately, It was not worth the wait. Amy Adams is great but she is let down by the rest of the cast and the lame story! See it just for her performance.

Maybe there are people like this in the world, maybe I don't care. Junebug is such a banal film with such little ambition that it's hard to think of good or bad things to say about it. Nivola and his new wife Davidtz, go to see his parents. It's kind of like Meet the Parents, but...( read more) all the snide remarks are said under their breath. Bad things are said and people just accept it. Ben Mckenzie is the real standout of this film. He actually tries to create some conflict but he is simply ignored. Him and Amy Adams as his bizarrely jolly wife would have made a better focal point. We only see McKenzie happy at his place of work. He hits on his brother's wife, talks down to his own wife and shows disdain for his baby that's on the way. But one interesting character doesn't make a great film. How good would The Dark Knight have been if Batman had ignored all of The Joker's evil schemes? Good, but pointless.

A unique portrait of a lifestyle that might seem foreign to many audiences. I loved it! And Amy Adams gives one of the best performances I've ever seen.

This quietly powerful drama will leave you moved. The world of disfunctional family indeed is a hell. In fact, it is so terrible that from the certain point no one wants to deal with it, gives up trying to understand and accepts the way things go around and Morrison brilliantly c...( read more)aptures every aspect of a given, extremely difficult subject. Taking us through scenes boasting deeply concealed resentment, anger and frustration buried under small talk and lame jokes, Morrison at every corner gives us opportunity to laughed off or simply pity these people, but at the same time he manages to cover them with warm blanket of charm which makes us care about what's really going on here. Stylistically, mix of Todd Solondz's and Alexander Payne's way of telling the story, it's still fresh and acting is superb all around, especially that of Ben McKenzie and Scott Wilson. Everyone who knows (or not, after all it's not required) the sadness laying at the depth of the heart of every member in that kind of family will feel at home here. But he/she may also feel a brief relief.

A fine little independent movie about a man introducing his new wife to his family back home. Said family turns out to be quite something, causing plenty of awkward, funny and thoughtful moments. The humor is a subtle one, living off the quirky characters and situations, being th...( read more)e center piece of this movie. It's carried by all around great performances, especially by the wonderful Embeth Davidtz and Amy Adams. In the end the movie takes a somewhat tragic turn, which makes it lose some of its charm, sadly. Still, it's a very special little film and worth checking out for its portrayal of a dysfunctional family and rural American life.

Academy Award winner movies arent my thing. The only scenes watchable are when Adams is in it. :)

Classico film indie (!), con classici personaggi indie (!!!) bizzarri e pazzi e inverosimili, cioè, mai più pure questo.
Meno male che almeno c'era Amy Adams, bravissima come al solito.

I was looking forward to seeing this movie after buying it on a whim as it was cheap! Whether I'll keep the DVD to watch again is questionable.
It all starts in Madeleine's (Davidtz) art gallery in Chicago. She meets George, and soon enough, they get married. We don't see this th...( read more)ough as it's skipped over. We only hear it has been six months since.
When Madeleine decides to go to visit a painter in North Carolina, in order to get him to sell his work in her gallery, she and George decide to visit George's family at the same time.
You immediately see the contrast between Madeleine and her new in-laws. It's awkward at times, but at no point do you see Madeleine act like she is better or a higher class than her new family. Which surprised me as I expected this sort of attitude to be taken.
George has a typical family if you ask me, His mother, Peg, is a controlling woman, weary of strangers. His father, Eugene, seems rather quiet who just wants to be away from everything, taking residence in the basement. Also, Johnny, the other son, seems quite an angry man, not really saying much to anyone. And finally, his wife Ashley, a happy person, who is positive and upbeat, also being heavily pregnant.
The cast was average. The second I saw Embeth Davidtz I smiled as all I thought was "Oh! That's the woman from Matilda!" I couldn't decide whether I liked her character or not though, or whether she was that good of an actress. Another star I recognised was Benjamin McKenzie (Yes the cute blonde guy from The OC) who played frustrated Johnny. If I'm honest I wanted more from him and his character. I wanted more as to WHY he was so angry towards his family, and his pregnant wife.
''God loves you just the way you are, but He loves you too much to let you stay that way.''
The star of this movie was Amy Adams, who was far from average. She played pregnant Ashley. She was superb, such a quirky character that made me smile to no end. So greatly acted. I have a new found respect for Adams. All of the characters were not developed enough in my opinion, only a touch to enable you to relate to the family as a whole.
We see the ups and downs of this family, and the new comer, trying to get along in this wholesome movie. It's a nice story, but lacked true depth. However, the ending was near on perfect.

It was actually a little dull. I definitely sympathized with Ashley character, Johnny and Peg both had to grow on me, and I ended up not liking George at the end.

Plus, SPOILER ALERT, I didn't like how the movie ended unresolved. My movies don't always have to have perfect happ...( read more)y endings, but at least SOME kind of resolution. For a minute, I thought the movie cut off early or something!
