I did think a lot of the dialogue was over the top, but Ellen Page's delivery was pretty awesome. I can respect that. As for the basic message of the film, it makes some excellent observations about love, commitment, and how appearances can be deceiving.

This is a pretty good ?indie?. I?d heard good, I?d heard bad about this film. I thought Ellen Page was quite irritating after a while and Michael Cera, deserved more screen time but overall, the story makes up for it and the non-Disney ending was perfect!

I put-off watching when it came out, but when I finally summoned up the stamina for it - something that took 2 years - I was totally underwhelmed by the credit's song. Its not bad. it just had heart-sink stippled all over it's stave.

Once I'd forced myself through that, however,...( read more) I began to really enjoy it. It's a great little film: positive, while keeping the story firmly on the grounds of reality and well written. I mean, I'm not sure if Jennifer Garner fell naturally into her role as a woman desparate for children, and it has its moments of cliche (the lab class being one moment), but it still a good, and thoughful comedy (which examines theme's that overlap a little with the vastly inferior Hong Kong Film 'Too Young').

Juno MacGuff: You should've gone to China, you know, 'cause I hear they give away babies like free iPods. You know, they pretty much just put them in those t-shirt guns and shoot them out at sporting events.

Little 20 year old Ellen Page stars as Juno McGuff, a 16 year old gir...( read more)l, who acts like a 16 year old girl using her wit to define herself and keep others away in a sense.

Juno's world gets slightly flipped when she decides to have sex with her best friend, played by the always enjoyable Michael "George Michael Bluth" Cera, mainly due to curiosity, and ends up becoming pregnant.

Mac MacGuff: Did you see that coming?
Bren: Yeah... but I was hoping she was expelled, or into hard drugs.
Mac MacGuff: Or DWI... anything but this.

Juno basically sees this as an inconvenience, and eventually decides to give the baby up to some adopting parents.

They are played by Jason Bateman and Jennifer Garner. Once these two become involved, we follow Juno's nine months of pregnancy along with the parents to be, Juno's best friend, and her parents played by J.K. Simmons and Allison Janney.

Mac McGuff: Next time I see that Bleeker kid, I'm gonna punch him in the wiener.

This is director Jason Reitman's second film and while it doesn't have as much edge as Thank You For Smoking and may not have as much of the quirky likability that made Little Miss Sunshine work so well, this is still a very likable film, with a strong screenplay, and a very good cast.

Next to Page who does carry this film very well, her parents have my favorite scenes in this movie. Cera also continues to show how well and real he can play an awkward teen. Jason Bateman is put into a role that is fitting of him, but also adds more depth to his usual witty charisma. Jennifer Garner also does the best work I've seen her in thus far, especially as the film moves on.

This movie definetely has a good charming sense to it that makes it very enjoyable. There are plenty of funny lines and good moments. The soundtrack is nice and fitting with the spirit of the film. Overall, this is a sweet comedy that does use quick, funny, and intelligent dialog to advance its story.

Note: After seeing this movie for the second time, I recognize even more how good the performances are as well as a lot of subtle visual jokes and clues throughout the movie. Ellen Page for example, shows throughout the movie that she tries to seem very witty using a lot of pop culture references, but does actually get some wrong, indicating her age vs. what she is referencing. This is just some of the many things that enhance this uniformly strong ensemble cast. In addition, I seem to have a constant urge to revisit this movie more often than others. Its a good watch that keeps it very engaging.

Vanessa Loring: Your parents are probably wondering where you are.
Juno MacGuff: Nah... I mean, I'm already pregnant, so what other kind of shenanigans could I get into?

Pros - the unrealistic but sharply written dialogue keeps you engaged. The character arcs are defined with care and intelligence, in that way that makes you think: 'yes, that moment was subtle, this is quite well done, I'm glad I picked this, i'm very smart'. The acting is good,...( read more) very good at times (special mention to Ellen Page).

Cons - The packaging. It really feels like an assembled (and arguably derivative) product from the indie factory. I would agree with Edward Porter of the Sunday Times when he said it was almost a parody of fey American Indie comedies, with its bright colours and chirpy pop soundtrack.

Even with the intelligent screenplay and acting, it simply feels manufactured, like it just came off the 'american indie' production line (Strangely enough you could imagine Juno herself having the same opinion if she saw the film, which is an odd and pretty rare occurance I guess.)

It clearly says it has heart, but its hard to see it through this packaging, even with the occasional nuanced relationship between characters.
Because of that you can't really get under its skin, and because of that I found it to be an underwhelming, albeit humorous and intelligent film about maturity and growing up.

Also I would share the same reservations with MetalMario2's review, in which he says:
I don't like the message this film sends to teenage girls. Specifically, that teen pregnancy is without consequence. Indeed, the film seems to be conveying the message that you can get knocked up, then give the baby away without emotional trauma, and all the while, your parents won't get mad at you and your boyfriend will stick by you.

    Serious topic, funny story.

The dialogue in this movie is the best I've ever heard.

Eu admito que gostei da direção e trilha sonora indies, mas o conteúdo desse filme é modernista e superficial demais. A história ficou muito ruim, e o tratamento indie não combinou.
