In a way, I was a bit letdown by this, mainly because of the short running time. A lot of shit was cut from the comics and a really important part that they should've kept was the thoughts that went through all of the characters heads. Reading how Hal Jordan felt when he was experimenting with the ring made it that much more fun and made you like the character even more. There were also a couple of one-liners (courtesy of Hal) that could've easily been kept in. There was a part in the comics where Hal has just saved Ace using the ring and he's keeping them in the air via a protective green orb. Hal realizes that he has to contain the blast so he tells Ace to say "Hi" to the rescue team and drops Ace into the water. It's a small but funny moment that made Hal ten times more badass in the comics as opposed to him just dropping Ace and saying "Sorry" like in the movie. Little shit like that and the fact they could've put the time and place of the action happening onscreen would've made it stay true to the comic while still maintaining a level of coherence in regards to moving the plot forward. If I hadn't read the comics, it would've been a bitch to try and figure out all the jumps forward through time. One minute, Martian Manhunter's watching TV, he sees a noir film and changes his form into that of a detective. Next time you see him, he's in a car with another detective and they act like they're old pals. Shit like that could've been extended to make it flow better and let the audience be aware of the time jump. Now the animation was great for the most part but it seems like they blew their load hiring the voice actors and ran out of money for the animation by the end. As awesome as it was to hear Angel, Agent Cooper, Xena, NPH and the many others that all rocked equally as their respective characters, a few of them seemed kind of wasted. Reading the comics, the big three (Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman) didn't have many lines and so it didn't seem necessary to have Jeremy SIsto (who was surprisingly good as Batman), Kyle MacLachlan (who is always awesome) and Lucy Lawless (again, always awesome) come in for a part that just had a few lines for them. I know they were trying to stick close to the comics but the caliber of the cast mixed with the need for more of the awesome animation they had just screamed for a longer running time. I wanted this movie to last forever. The actors, the animation, the story, I loved every minute of it. Luckily, they kept the amazing speech by JFK so that was a nice touch but still, I wanted more, damn it. Overall, I totally dug this flick and think it's a helluva lot better than the Marvel straight to DVD movies, I just wish there was more time to enjoy it.
Great and thrilling adventure reveals the origin of the DC Comics' Justice League. I like the adventure scenes of the Green Lanturn, The Flash and Superman in this animated movie.
A solid, surprisingly faithful adaptation of the excellent graphic novel. DC has really been kicking ass with their direct-to-DVD animated movies, which is more than can be said for Marvel.
I really liked it because it pays respect to Flash because in here he fights and is not ajoke like they portray it everywhere else but what I don't like is that they focus on green lantern like the best or strongest how can that be that Superman gets out of the fight!! altogether!!
still nice to watch!!!
Adapting the award-winning DC Comics miniseries DC: THE NEW FRONTIER by Darwyn Cooke, Justice League: The New Frontier spins a tale of the DC Universe in the 1950s, focusing on test pilot Hal Jordan (...( read more )Green Lantern) and the Martian Manhunter. The story also features other DC characters, including Barry Allen (the Flash), Superman, Wonder Woman, Batman, and many more.
Did I read the original? Yes. Am I going to judge it as a movie and not just compare it to the movie? Yes. So did I like what I just saw? No. The whole point of this story is to give you a sense of awe and inspiration that certain men and situations gave America decades ago. I believe they could have hit those points if they had more time to develop them. You had John just joining a police force out of nowhere, the whole "Center" story is rushed and just feels like random ubervillain # 14, and why dinosaurs? Why? Try explaining it for those who didnt read the novel - I had a tough enough time with my wife when we watched it. Why was Hal's friend suddenly wearing a purple outfit like some other guys standing in the end? Who's the guy with the jet pack? Why was the government out to get the heroes? Why mention in passing a black hero who was killed? On and on, there were to many questions that I knew the answers to, but not a person who had no idea what the story was really about. The 2 uses of "Son of a bitch" didnt really feel natural either, like they were tacked on for "PG's" sake. You have the original source material, build on it, and not just make it an all-star voice cast of a Cliff's Notes version of an otherwise beautifully told story.
I must see this. I love what DC is doing with their characters. Their stand alone movies are going to once again define these heroes and expand the dc universe. It's awesome!
The animation was very well done but just like Superman Doomsday it felt like they rushed the story. The movie should have been a longer with more detail. I didn't read the comic so I can't compare how accurate it is. But for short fun entertainment it works.
The New Frontier opens up with a couple scenes that show this movie is more for the older crowd rather than your children. That continues with the heavy political plot. I'm not a huge comic book fan, but I did enjoy most of the movie. The problem is the characters are under-used. Sure you see a lot of Martian Manhunter, Batman, and the beginning of Green Lantern, but you only see them use their powers for a brief period.
Great movie. With only two animated movies out so far DC has proved that there animated movies are supurior to Marvels. In fact Marvel should take a page out of DCs book and make animated movies based on famous story lines.
Pretty cool retro art and maturish storytelling. A bit short with character backstory, some anvilicious political speeches, and they really needed Kevin Conroy for Batman, but let's not whine. Still a cool ride.
It looks corny just from the previews. We have the tecnology to make awesome movies yet this looks like its so old and look at the costumes. They would have been better off making the characters look like the justice league animated tv show. As far as green lantern i perfer john stewart. Even Batman looked weird and corny and I didn't even think that was possible
I didn't read the graphic novel off of which The New Frontier was based but I'm guessing there was a lot more to it and this movie is more or less a Cliff Notes edition. I loved the 50s setting with the red paranoia and the whole scapegoating aspect of the story's opening was really impressive. The ending kind of flaked out in the same way anime movies flake out but the very ending tied together pretty nicely. Nowhere nearly enough Batman and Green Lantern (as in NOT Hal Jordan) but overall not bad.
Sadly, after my experience with Superman: Doomsday, I was expecting more from this one. Particularly since the graphic novel was really quite good. This was just a wicked slow and rather disjointed mess. I wouldn't pay money to see it, that's for sure.
I Am Not That Big Of A Fan Of Comics But This Movie Was Good. Set In The 1950's, I Liked It Because It Showed How The Green Lantern Came To Be And The Martian Hunter's Reason Of Coming To Earth. One Of The Things That I Didn't Like Was That Other Heroes Like Robin, Aquaman Among Others Didn't Really Get An Important Enough Role In This Movie Appearing No More Than 2 Minutes Each One.
Okay, I already reviewed this title. This makes me a little mad that I have to do it again! Anyway, the big message behind this review...it wasn't that bad.
That makes me sound kinda douchy. I don't mean to sound douchy. There's a lot that I have to say that makes a lot of sense and this, too, will make sense after I explain it. I'm a big Bruce Timm fan. I have been since the early Batman animated series. I especially loved all the animated movies...
...until Mystery of the Batwoman. Now, you have to understand, if you haven't guessed by now, I'm a big comic book nerd. But I'm one of those tame comic book nerds. I get excited when a comic book movie comes out. I loved Hulk and (even though I admit that it's a terrible movie) Elektra. Elektra has a place in my heart (and on my shelf!), so please understand that I am crazy forgiving of most comic book movies. It's that I understand that different media need to be approached differently. But Mystery of the Batwoman was just no good. Then Superman: Doomsday came out and I was just wildly disappointed. I lost all of the character's heart and that upsdet me, despite the fact that Jayne and Spike were Superman and Lex Luthor. But then New Frontier showed up. New Frontier is some amazing source material...
...and the movie sticks creepy close to the source material. But that's where the movie has problems. I love the fact that it was so accurate. That gave me goosebumps. But for some reason, Warner Premiere straight-to-DVD movies refuse to be over 77 minutes long. Why? (Besides the fact that the reason the movie is only released on DVD is because it's trying to save money...that little thing) But 77 minutes is so short to tell this epic story. That's where attention to detail screws this movie because long sections of the text are condensed in terrible pieces of dialogue meant to catch the reader up and drive right through emotional, mental developments.
But otherwise, the movie is pretty great. I really respect the movie for looking like Darwyn Cooke's original book. It is a real visual treat to look at this movie and feel like you are reading the book all over again. I really have to commend the opening credits. I loved seeing the old covers animated and super-sixtiesified.
This is a good watch and a great story, but the pace that the movie needed to be and the trimming that took place really hinders the movie.
Could be one of the best anaimated feature of a DC comic come to life. Was amazing. All the voices were perfect as was the story. To see the Silver age Superman, batman and Wonder Woman with the other amazing JLA's is just the best thing ever. Was just amazing and I want more of the movies NOW!!!
