Recent Reviews for Keeping Mum

Keeping Mum surprised me - this is one funny movie. What a cast - Rowan Atkinson, Maggie Smith, Patrick Swayze, and Kristin Scott-Thomas are all very good in this movie. Keeping Mum takes place in a small town in England, with Rowan Atkinson as the town's pastor. Scott-Thomas is his wife who is having an affair with her hot and American golf instructor (Swayze) and her new housekeeper (Smith) is there to not only do her household duties but also try to help this disfunctional family - in a very unusual way.

Broccolli . . .
Just watched this darkly clever twist on the Mary Poppins story twice, and I've plenty to say, in no particular rank order.
1. Kristin Scott-Thomas fans will not want to miss this; it's some of her best work ever.
2. I got into an extended discussion last week with some friends about Rowan Atkinson. I was actively recruiting potential viewers for one of my newly discovered favorites, Mr. Bean's Holiday -- I found I was not exactly preaching to the choir. We agreed on one thing, however, I think: Atkinson, especially as the Bean character, may finally be an acquired taste. I must say that seeing him play the straight man in this movie is quite a different experience than seeing him play the "straight man" as Bean. This character is a little more of this world, if you know what I mean. Thinking about him way back in the Black Adder BBC series days, I remember that there were times, especially toward the end of the series, where he played a character who was more couched in the dramatic than in the comic arena. There are times in this movie even, as when he gives his speech to the convention of ministers, that the tone shifts decidedly from comic to dramatic. I would love, if it exists, to see Atkinson in a pure dramatic role. Know of any? Please suggest one. If no such film does in fact exist, then I would love for him to do one. He really is a consummate actor. Flixsters, it takes a lot for me to put a living actor on my all-time favorite list, but I'm going to do it with Atkinson -- on faith. What a talent.
3. And since I'm doing it with Atkinson, I must say that I'm going to take the plunge and put Maggie Smith on that list as well. Over the past few years I've become so used to seeing her in the Harry Potter movies that it's almost Twilight Zone strange to see her in anything else. Seeing her here, I'm reminded of how great she is and how she has proved her amazing ability and range time and again over the years.
If you're at all drawn to British humor or to dark comedy in general, this one may be a good choice. There are no fireworks, but there is plenty of just plain great actor-to-actor interaction amidst the mayhem.

This film took a bit of time to get into, but when I did, I really liked it. A great cast ensures plenty of memorable laughs.
-
An interesting black comedy that takes dysfunctional to a whole new level. Rowan Atkinson is wonderful playing a more subtle humorous role and Maggie smith is plays the harmless little old lady to the extreme.
-
An average film with the usual above-average performance you'd expect from the wonderful Maggie Smith. Worth a look for her psychopathic granny alone.
-
So wicked and sour is this english comedy that it will occasionally have you thinking how someone could even suggest the idea of having Maggie Smith be a sweet-and-innocent-seeming-yet-ultra-evil-serial-killer without being a sadistic weirdo. There is a lot of comedy on display, and for all the murder and mayhem, it is a very peaceful and enjoyable film.

ok it was funny but i thought it would be heaps funnier and better than it was i think rowan atkinson should just stick with being mr bean
-
black comedy at its best esp maggie smith, rowan atkinson and yes mrs parker who had a lot of trouble with the flower arranging community.....
-
I saw absolutely everything coming in this movie. Not one thing was a suprise. Yet I loved it...
Maggie Smith is the bomb and the rest of the cast follows suit. -
Maggie Smith plays a Nanny who is a Mary Poppins type with a vigilante dark side. She comes to work at the home of the town vicar Rev. Goodfellow played most wonderfully by Rowan Atkinson who's wife (Emilia Fox) is having an affair with a very sleezy golf instructor played by Patrick Swayze. They have a wimpy son and a nympho daughter, a dog next store that never stops barking and a nosy church lady to make their lives just a little more difficult - that is until "Grace" their new housekeeper gets there.

This is a quirky little movie, Don't expect MR Bean comedy though, Rowan Atkinson is the Vicar in a small villiage with a very disfunctional family..very funny
-
Great!
Maggie Smith gave a calm, but shocking act. She really was a darker character of 'Mary Poppins'.
This was a great idea, turned to a great movie.
I didn't expect much at first, but this movie turned out to be one of my favorite British drama comedy.
I love the ending so much... Very funny.
This movie didn't give a good morale message, even with Rowan Atkinson as a vicar.
Gloria was hot! (You'll know what I mean if u get the uncensored one..) -
cute. hard to believe that kristen scott thomas would marry rowan atkinson OR lust after the overly sleazy patrick swaze character. i have a new fondness for maggie smith after this movie.
-
A little dark, sometimes confusing but oh so fantastic. Handled beautifully, the story goes through well thought out and paced twists until the conclusion. Great work.
-
British black comedy. Funny seeing Mr. Bean as a vicar. I guess I am not a big fan of dark humour.
-
It was slow at first but if you don't get bored to much at first stay and watch the rest it does get better funny stuff
-
A pretty good black comedy about a family with a cheating wife (Kristin Scott Thomas), a daughter (Tamsin Egerton) that change boyfriend every day, a son (Toby Parkes) that get bullied in school and the reverend father (Rowan Atkinson) that has no idea what is going on. But soon a new housekeeper joins the family: Grace Hawkins (Maggie Smith) that turns out to be a serial killer and blessing to the whole family. Good storyline and acting with some good jokes makes "Keeping Mum" really worth seeing.

Well if you want to watch this film then you will enjoy it, its humourus and just a bit dull. Then how about watching a chapter a day?
-
Completely wry and charming British comedy. It's a joy to watch Maggie Smith, Kristin Scott Thomas, Rowan Atkinson and Patrick Swayze acting together.
-

-

Directed by: Niall Johnson.Starring: Maggie Smith, Rowan Atkinson, Kristin Scott Thomas, Patrick Swayze.
As always, British comedy shines through as one of the best you can get and this film does what any British comedy does best and that is to draw you into its world and its characters and make you laugh endlessly.
The story follows a small family in a small town who all have there own little problems, until one day, a very quirky, charming and very mysterious women turns up and changes there lives forever. Theres more to it than that but I won't ruin it for you. Crafty plotting, brilliant humour and sharp dialogue, it focuses on the characteristics of these charming characters and draws its humour from that. Maggie Smith is very much the highlight of this film, in a very different role but one of her best in many years, quirky, funny and charming, a very powerful actress in any role she tackles.
This film is extremely overlooked and it shouldn't be, it is British comedy at its best in years, charming, funny, quirky, mysterious, thrilling and with a twist that came as one hell of a surprise to me, it needs to be seen. -
from the accent down to the humor, you know this movie is REALLY BRITISH.

a beautiful movie with a great story and some funny twists. And you can't praise this movie without mentioning the brilliant acting from Maggie Smith, but also Patrick Swayze who actually surprised me. It's also fun to se Rowan Atkinson in this role, it really shows that he's more than just Mr. Bean.
